Metal Gear Solid (PlayStation) - my very favourite video game... probably. The interactive action movie I always wanted, and the first video game to tell me a story where I didn't have to meet it more than halfway. Everything I'd always wanted games to be. I played it repeatedly. Landmark game, and massively important to me.
Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars (PlayStation) - old school point and click game that I absolutely adored during my original PlayStation era. Historical artefacts/global conspiracy storyline which is absolutely my thing, some excellent writing - particularly for the time - and some actual laughs.
Mass Effect 2 (PlayStation 3) - the game that got me back into gaming after my self-imposed exile when I started to be interested in going outside and doing things and going to pubs and all that. This sucked me back into being a full time gamer, and I played it so much that I got my first ever platinum trophy without actually trophy hunting. I've probably played this through ten or twelve times. I make the same choices every time.
BioShock Infinite (PlayStation 3) - I love BioShock Infinite so much. Wonderful setting, some fantastic characters, and a story that I think is great. I actually think this is one of the best stories told in gaming. People seem to have turned on this game a bit over the years but I still have an incredible fondness for it.
Persona 5 Royal (PlayStation 4) - The modern Persona formula is absolutely perfect for me. I love loads of story and hanging out with my game friends doing things and stuff before of course becoming embroiled in some sort of world-threatening escapade. I platinumed Persona 5, and then Royal on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. If they re-release it on PlayStation 6 I'll platinum it again.
Elden Ring (PlayStation 5) - Elden Ring is a glorious video game. The world is amazing. The combat is flexible and tense and exciting. The creature designs are top notch. The lore! The music! The sights you'll see! Just being in that world is a joy. I've played it three times since it came out last year which given my backlog is absurd. I'll play it again. And again.
Honourable mentions. The only two games per machine killed me a bit because Final Fantasy VII and IX would have definitely made my top six. As would PaRappa the Rapper probably. And Silent Hill. In fact my entire list would have been PlayStation games probably. Xenoblade Chronicles is one of my favourites that didn't make the cut. Yakuza 0. Super Mario Galaxy 2. Toejam and Earl. Bloodborne. Civilization. Horizon Forbidden West. Treasure Island Dizzy. Super Street Fighter II. Xenon 2. Kurushi. Danganronpa 1 and/or 2. Lemmings. Red Dead Redemption II. A million other things. So many things.
1. Silent Hill 2 - PS2
2. Astro Bot Rescue Mission - PS4
3. The Last of Us - PS3
4. The Legend of Zelda BotW - Switch
5. Elden Ring - PS5
6. Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars - PC
So difficult to say but for me it would probably be:
1 - Zelda Link to the Past (SNES)
2 - Super Mario World (SNES)
3 - Disco Elysium (PS5)
4 - Medal of Honor Frontline (PS2)
5 - GOWR (PS5)
6 - Destiny 1 (PS3)
Shout out to Batman Arkham Asylum (PS3) which was incredible at the time, GT2 (PS1) and of course RE4.
This is pretty hard to just pick 6 😅, I've had to leave out some great games like TLOU, Dragon Quest 11 and Resident Evil 7.
1. Persona 5 Royal - PS4
2. The legend of Zelda BoTW - Switch
3. Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii
4. Horizon Zero Dawn - PS4
5. Final Fantasy 10 - PS2
6. Golden Sun Dark Dawn - DS
Persona 4 Golden (PSVITA)
This game changed my life. The introspective character stories really helped me through a tough time, and helped me see that I don't need to reject the parts of me that other people don't like, and that accepting those parts is the only way to grow. And people might hate you for that, but ultimately, it's their problem. I started to build a lot of confidence after finished P4 Golden.
Resident Evil 4 Remake (PS5)
The original was previously one of my favorite games of all time, but the Remake really surpasses it in practically every way. It's one of the best games ever made, made better. I have this platinumed, and will still run through it every other week or so. It's just THAT good.
Uncharted 2 (PS3)
I remember as a teenager, rewatching the trailer for Uncharted 2 in anticipation for the release. The original Uncharted I absolutely loved, and was the first game I got with the console. I actually had bought the game before I got a PS3 for Christmas. My mom thought I was watching a movie rather than playing games on my new system, she knew nothing about video games, but came away impressed. Uncharted 2 took that, ran with it, and I was blown away. Not only did I have an incredible single player story, with so many quotable and memorable moments, but I also had hours upon hours of fun with the multiplayer mode.
The Last of Us (PS3/PS4/PS5)
Yeah, this game is one of my favorites too. I remember when the game came out on PS3, and mine was busted. My brother had it, and he was downplaying it, like eh you know it's alright, you're not missing much. I finally got my hands on it, and he was like "OK, I was downplaying it, because your PS3 broke, and didn't want you to feel bad, but this game is like the best game ever." It was incredible, but the Factions mode...that is one of my favorite multiplayer games ever. Probably my favorite multiplayer game ever. There's just nothing else like it to this day.
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Subsistence (PS2)
While not my favorite story, that goes to Metal Gear Solid 2, the gameplay combined with my second favorite story in the series really blows any Metal Gear game out of the water for me in a big way. The attention to detail, the hidden mechanics, the stealth systems, and enemy encounters with environment interactions are all top notch, and as close to perfect as a game can get, even now. Snake Eater is my favorite Metal Gear, milquetoast take, I know, but that it's mine.
Nier: Automata (PS4)
Existentialism robot game. Nier: Automata is to video games, what Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep is to novels, and what Blade Runner is to film. Except it is directed and written by a crazed masked lunatic, so it's dialed up past 11 to the moon where it explodes because you self destructed for a funny moment.
Honestly, any of these games can replace the other in the spots, except for Persona 4. Besides the actual Bible, Persona 4 is my Bible. As cringe as this might sound, if Jesus told me to love other people, Yu Narukami helped me to love myself. Irreplaceable game in my number one spot for sure.
Honorable mention to Fromsoft Soulsborne games. Easily my favorite series of all time, and my favorite "genre" of game. I couldn't choose just one, so I didn't pick any. Elden Ring is probably the front runner there.
1. Deus Ex(PS2, but play it on PC) - What gaming could have been like if players didn't want to be told where to go and what to do constantly
2. Mass Effect 2(PS4) - My favorite story and characters of all time
3. Metal Gear Solid 3(PS3) - What happens when a genius who is at his peak is allowed to break all conventions.
4. Skyrim(PS4) - Had to put one Bethesda game in here. Maybe the best RPG developers overall. You should probably play their games with mods on PC of course
5. Assassin's Creed 2(PS3) - Back in 2009 this was THE game. Nothing else could touch it. The story, music, atmosphere and ambition are still hard to match. Modern Ubisoft makes me want to cry.
6. Telltale's The Walking Dead Season 1(PS4) - Back in 2012 everything about this title was novel. I loved it. Lee is still the BEST zombie game dad. Yeah I said it. Sad that Telltale went down the Ubisoft path of quantity to the point of no quality.
1 - Donkey Kong Country 2 - SNES
2 - Final Fantasy IX - PS1
3 - Assassins Creed Brotherhood - PS3
4 - The Last Guardian - PS4
5 - Red Dead Redemption - PS3
6 - Super Mario World - SNES
