I just bought myself a PS Vita (summer 2015). I have been watching it closely over the past 3 years and I know full well what its woes are. I know that there will be no more AAA games from Sony or western third parties. I know that many Vita games were rushed or simply not handled by the most competent studios over the years. However, I decided to get one anyway. Here are my reasons for jumping in:
First off, I love handheld gaming devices. In fact, I prefer them to consoles. I know that puts me in a minority category as far as western gamers go. However, I really like the convenience of having a game device that I can play at home, or on a plane or on my lunch break at work. I am not the kind of person who must have the ultimate in new technology all the time. I just want to have good games to play in a format that is convenient for me. That means handhelds. I also own two PSPs, a 3DS XL and two Neo Geo Pocket Colors for those who care about retro hardware.
Although the Vita library is not large, there is a lot of goodness to be had. Before buying the Vita I combed through the list of Vita games at gamefaqs and easily found 40+ games that I would really like to play. For a handheld, that is pretty good. The biggest standouts were titles like Little Big Planet, Tear Away, Uncharted and Kill Zone. As I said, I know that there will be no more games like that. However, I can also see that Sony made an honest effort to try and bring a solid library to the Vita before they decided that the economics do not work out. I will take full advantage of it.
I am a particular fan of JRPGs and for the past two generations the handheld scene has been the best place to be for JRPGs. The PSP and 3DS both have awesome JRPG libraries and I think that the Vita will also have long legs in Japan. How many of those games will come to the west? I have no idea. However, knowing that Atlus and XSeed are big supporters of the Vita was enough to convince me that there will be no shortage of JRPG goodness. I hope that Square-Enix will bring games like World of Final Fantasy over here as well. My fingers are crossed.
The idea of the Vita being a place to primarily play Indie games is not a bad thing in my opinion. Many indie games are more fun than the big budget AAA games releasing on the consoles, and many of the best indie games come to the Vita. I hope that Sony will continue to be aggressive in pursuing the best indie studios to get their games on the Vita. I will certainly buy them. I know that I could get most of the same games on Steam, but I would prefer to play a game like Shantae 1/2 Genie Hero or Mighty #9 on the Vita.
Lastly, I intend to have a go with the PS Now service. My internet service is more than fast enough to make it a smooth experience and I like the idea of sitting in a comfortable chair with my headphones on playing a game like Ratchet and Clank : A Crack in Time on the Vita. I know full well that the experience would be better with an actual PS3, but I have no plans to ever get a PS3.
I am sure that people who bought into the Vita early are very disappointed by how things turned out. However, for someone like me who is just getting in, there is lots to look forward to.
Glad you are enjoying it but this sort of post more or less belongs on a personal blog. There are alot of free blog sites out there to post this sort of thing and help you keep them in order this however is not one of them. Once you find one you can put a link to it in your signature to share with others.
Thanks for understanding.
