Hogs-of-War-General

@FuriousMachine That's awesome and yeah restorations can do wonders!

Ohhh how do they look on 4k? And specifically how do they look from Shout Factory?

Just looked it up and there is! I'm not big into steelbooks, especially the costs, but the 4K collectors edition of The Blob has me tempted haha! I have only seen the Blob once about a decade ago and it stuck with me. Need to watch again!

Watched a really fun one today called Sting. From the same guy who helmed Wyrmwood and Nekrotronic. Dunno how this guy always makes his films look so good despite their modest budgets, but he does it again. Depending on your tastes there may not be enough scares and may be a little too much family drama, but I thought it was well performed, has a satisfying conclusion, it works with its budget limitations rather than against them and at its heart thrums a surprisingly affecting emotional core. Don't watch if you are scared of spiders.

Watched a few movies on digital this weekend.

First out was Cuckoo, a horror movie about a teenage girl who, after her mother's passing, has to move with her father and his new family to a resort in the Bavarian Alps, a resort run by an eccentric friend of her father's. It was an interesting movie that flirted with Lynchian weirdness, but didn't commit to it fully and, as a result, I felt it sort of didn't really know what it wanted to be. A lot of dangling plot points that seemed a bit random didn't help either. Not a bad movie, but I felt it could have been so much more. Dan Stevens is frickin' awesome as the eccentric Herr König, though.

I finally got around to see The Northman and I liked it. It's only my second Eggers movie and, as I've mentioned earlier, I was disappointed by The Witch after all the praise it got (I will revisit it, though. Sometimes the wrong mood and/or the wrong expectations can negatively impact your experience). As for The Northman, though, I didn't love it. It was a bit predictable and I remember thinking it was an interesting take on "The Lion King" Still, beautifully shot, fantastic cinematography and good actors (the accents were all over the place, though).

Finally, I saw Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. The only previous exposure to Elvira I had was through the Horrorsoft game way back when, and then, only briefly. Not sure if she had much exposure outside of the US, but here in Norway we were mostly unaware. I recently read in a review of her autobiography that Cassandra Peterson was far from the bimbo I mistook her for and I became interested in learning more and decided to watch the movie and read the book.
And I so wanted to like the movie, but alas... too much a product of its time, I guess. The Elvira persona was somewhat different than what I was expecting (in a good way) and it did have a couple of good jokes, but for the most part, the humour was a bit too cringey for me and the plot was exceptionally weak. I do believe, though, that if I'd seen it when it came out, there is every chance I would have loved it and it would have been a nostalgic favourite.
Still looking forward to the autobiography, though

@Hogs-of-War-General I'll let you know once I've seen them They are a few of many 4K discs in my collection that I've yet to check out in their 4K glory.

@Pizzamorg Sting sounds like it might be right up my alley and it's available for streaming on Prime Video here, so I'll definitely be checking it out!

Hooooly sh*t Megalopolis was bad. Like ‘The Room’ bad. It’s hard where to even start. Everyone’s weird delivery? It all looking like a cutscene from a PS3 game? Auntie Wow?

The thing is, I did feel more watching it than a hell of a lot of recent blockbusters. Coppola has funded this movie out of clearly any reason except to make money. I’d be more praising except the movie’s rubbish and he was harassing women on set.

@Pizzamorg I just watched Sting and I loved it! Charming and full of heart, like you said, and appropriately gory. Loads of fun! It also has the perfect setup for how the creature can go fairly unnoticed for so long. I've never heard of the filmmaker before, but I will definitely try to chase down his other works, as this was top quality on a fairly low budget. Excellent recommendation, thanks for bringing it to my attention

Really glad you enjoyed it @FuriousMachine. Out of their other two films (that I've seen anyway) I'd recommend Wyrmwood first. It is a zombie movie, but a very different kind of zombie movie and its just straight up cool to be honest.

Has anybody seen the director's cut of "Alien"? It's actually shorter than the theatrical version but I seem to remember that Ridley Scott (in somewhat bizarre fashion) later disowned the new version and claimed to prefer the original.

@LN78 you’ve got me curious 🤣
That’s a new one for me.
Haven’t been in alien mood since forever but I may give it a loot.

@LN78 Yeah I have seen both versions as I own them on bluray. It's been awhile since I saw the theatrical cut but I recall liking the original theatrical version as the pacing is better in my opinion. I also saw the original twice this year. Once at home and once in theatres for the 45th anniversary re-release which was incredible by the way!

@Hogs-of-War-General I've just noticed there's an option to play either version when you fire up the 4K blu-ray. It's interesting because typically Ridley Scott director's cuts represent significant improvements over the originals. I might stick with the theatrical in this instance- it's one of my all time favourites. I'm still frustrated about the lack of an Atmos track on the disc, though.

Tonight I watched another killer spider movie called Infested. This one is very similar to Sting. Eerily so. But also not nearly as good either. Maybe watch as a double bill with Sting if you want, but you could probably give this one a miss.

Hogs-of-War-General

@LN78 Oh that's great but honestly I believe the theatrical release is the best version. What?!? No atmos for the 4k version? The audio design and score is amazing for the film as is but would have been incredible with atmos!

As for October 1st the films I watched were "Cabin Fever" and "The Blair Witch Project". I have never seen Cabin Fever before and never fully watched The Blair Witch Project so essentially saw both films for the first time and damn did they not disappoint!

Cabin Fever is just entertaining throughout especially the 2nd half where as in The Blair Witch Project is such a great film and I believe the main film to really kickoff the found footage genre! It was just a slight bummer on how it ended but definitely piques my interest to the sequels. Any thoughts on the sequels fellow film buffs?

@Hogs-of-War-General
I am not a film buff at all but I can confidently asset that the Blair Witch sequel is absolutely terrible. Shameless cack handed cash in. You should watch it just so you can see how bad it is.
The 2016 film was better but still not anywhere near the first one.

@sorteddan Thanks for your input and it comes across as that, but if I ever stumble upon it, I will give it a watch!

Watched the entire Back to the Future trilogy over the weekend (4K UHD Blu-Ray) - These were probably my favorite movies as a kid growing up, so it's absolutely impossible for me to give them an objective look. In fact the second is probably my favorite because of the Super 80's... err, 2015, even though it probably has the biggest plot holes given how time travel works in universe. Never had these on physical media until now (even to this day it seems like they pop up somewhere on cable every other month, so I've never felt the need), but I picked up the 4Ks on Prime Day earlier this year and it was a great way to revisit them. Had lots of fun extras too, like two episodes from a 90's cartoon that I didn't know existed (unfortunately those weren't remastered), and a few shorts they came out with in 2015 in celebration of "Future Day".

Riding Bean (Blu-Ray) - Anime homage to American crime/cop action flicks of the 70's-90's (think stuff like Dirty Harry or Lethal Weapon). Bean Bandit, the "Road Buster", is the best courier/getaway driver in Chicago, and when he's framed for kidnapping he hits the streets to take out the gang who set him up, but he'll have to do so while avoiding Chicago's finest. The dub is absolutely terrible (but kinda charming in a way), and it's so over the top it's pretty fun (Bean is a beast of a man who can rip off car doors with his bare hands and tank gunfire thanks to a bulletproof leather jacket & headband), and at a pretty brisk 45 minutes it sticks to the (ultraviolent) action.

Joker 2 is worse than Megalopolis. Genuinely. Absolute utter dogsh*t that isn’t even funny bad, just a bit depressing in terms of how transparently desperate it is.

@nessisonett Can't say I'm surprised, but I'm curious as to what you thought of the first one? I was not a fan, so seeing this was never really an option.

Watched my first genuine stinker this Halloween called Hostile Dimensions. It is a shame as the same group made Death of a Vlogger and I quite liked that one. If you haven't seen that one, I'd recommend it. But go in as cold as you can, as I think it'll be ruined if a synopsis gives anything away.
