Topic: Playstation in China

Guys, have a job relocation to China sometime next year. Can anyone confirm if I can still use my PS4 and PS5 when there. Also, if yes, would I be able to buy digital games off the UK servers or would I have to use the Chinese (if they even have??)
And finally, if yes to above, can I buy hard disk games in China, will they be in English and is there any Geo restrictions on them?

Thanks

@Emperor_Rusty Top answer from Google says "yes" and notes that the only problem might be download speeds when connecting to PS Stores in other countries (by default, your foreign PS4 will likely get connected to Hong Kong; only Chinese PS4s are pre-locked to Chinese servers). Some expats have also encountered far slower internet speeds when trying to play online multiplayer. Social functionality will be disabled, because Facebook and YouTube are blocked in China.

Not sure about physical games and language options, but I'm sure you can search around and find some fellow Brits who've moved out there already.

There's a possibility that the voltage might be different and you might need to get a transformer in order to play your consoles over there.

You probably won't be able to contact PS customer support as well since they're region blocked now. For example, if you're in Asia, you won't be able to contact US's or UK's customer support via chat.

@RogerRoger thanks for the reply, I also did a Google search and the info was difficult to come by. From what I have read, the population is into PC and smart phone games and consels haven't really taken off as the government prevented them in the past, I believe Sony is making a conserved effort into breaking into the Chinese Market, understandable too with 1.6bil peeps.

@WanderingBullet thanks for the reply, I never considered if voltage would be an issue and did a Google search and it confirmed that mainland China was 220v which is aligned to the UK's 220v-240v range, so that seems all good.
As for online speed, that may be an issue as you say, not sure if China has any servers, hope it won't be an issue. As for help issues, that doesn't really worry me as I can always reach out to my buddies here on Push Square for some help.

I will be sure to update this page when in China to let everyone else that's reading know what the final outcomes are and hopefully help someone else out in the future

@Emperor_Rusty
I had a business trip to Shanghai back in 2017 after buying my PSVR. Going against all common sense, I took my PS4 and PSVR (I was called into an isolated security room before boarding for my departure flight because of the Move controllers). I was staying at a Marriot, and they had standard U.S. sockets, which ran both systems with no issue.

I'm not sure of the voltage, but it's my understanding that the PS4 is universal and can take whatever. Of course, the console was my primary (no log in needed) and I didn't try to download anything, so how your account interacts online may be an issue.

As for discs, the PS4 is region free.

@lacerz thanks for the reply, not sure the ps4 (or any electrical appliance) can use both 110v and 240v as there is a relationship between the amount of current you use, resistance and voltage. From school days, v (volts) = I (current) x R (resistance)
Current is what actually powers the unit
I have no idea what the resistance of the ps4 is but it will stay constant, but let's say its 4 ohms
Therefore in 240v /4 ohms = 60 amps of current to run
If it was 110v then 110/4 ohms = 27amps
Less than half the power, so yea you would need a converter to 240v if you only had 110v

On a separate note, you had me in stitches with the move controllers, trying to describe what they were and how they work to security, they do look dodgy when think about them 😂😂

@Emperor_Rusty Good to know.👍

Yeah, it's only an issue if you experience any serious issue related to your account. Otherwise you don't really need to contact customer support.
