Topic: Which game to start with?

Hey guys, I just sniped a PS5 Digital, because I couldnt really resist my own hype anymore.
There are so many games I want to go for now, but only a limited budget of course so I can get like 2 or 3.
Possibility is I go with my brain and buy whats on sale right now. So Demons Souls, Sackboy and Resident Evil Village, you know kinda start with some launch titles and slowly work my way forward to current releases... By the time I have platinumed these 3, we might know more about their plans for Spartacus and my hope then is I can just sub to play the other expensive ones.

The games I want but that seem a bit of oddities to me are Miles Morales and Rift Apart. If I could just go for the remaster of the original I would, since Miles Morales looks like its pretty much just a 10 hour story DLC, Rift Apart on the other hand also seems a bit too short for Sonys ridiculous asking price of 80 bucks.

And then there are the new releases... I would love to play Elden Ring and Gran Turismo 7 and be in the hype mode with everyone else. But I know I am not very good at racing games... more like terrible, so I will probably bite my teeth on it, but I am kinda looking forward for an experience like that, since it just looks so pretty and polished.

I am not sure what to do and honestly have no clue. Maybe you guys can lighten up my dark mind on a cozy monday night.

@voogles Firstly, congratulations on mastering the greatest gaming challenge of all time... actually procuring a PS5 (!)

I'll jump in on this, mainly because I was in a very similar situation about a year ago. I'd returned to gaming after a ~10-ish year break... and frankly the choice/s of what to play were overwhelming, especially considering the PS4 era I'd missed out on.

There are of course "The Big 3" releases this quarter, inc. Elden Ring / Horizon FW / GT7... And I would suspect you can't go wrong with choosing any of these!

Then there are the highlight games you mention, inc. Resident Evil 8 / Miles Morales / R&C / Demon's Souls etc

However - my recommendation would be the 1 'big hitter' you have not mentioned.... Returnal

Returnal was my personal GOTY 2021, and is (IMO) a phenominal experience from start-to-finish. The game is a true presentation of PS5 capabilities/graphics, alongside frantic and addictive gameplay... polished off with a suitable (but fair) challenge. It was incredibly divisive at time of release due to the inability to save 'mid-run' (it is a rogue-lite game in nature)... but this was recently patched to now include a 'suspend' feature, meaning you can save you progress and actually shut down the PS5 lol. (NB. I beat it pre-patch, and had many a sleepless night leaving my PS5 in 'rest mode' and praying that my run was still present in the morning)

Many of the guys on this forum have beaten the game, and many also went for the platinum trophy (inc myself)....

I am currently playing SIFU, which in my opinion is far more frustrating than Returnal - and also has a far less satisfying gameplay loop.

Returnal was a real 'lightning-in-a-bottle' game for me, and I believe it is currently discounted on PS Store (in UK is is <£53, which is great. I paid £70 release price, and have no regrets).

If you are looking for a more 'story-based' experience though, Miles Morales is a pretty great game and showcase...also quite cheap now.

You could double-dip on Returnal and Miles, having Returnal as the 'main game' and then jumping into Miles on occasions where Returnal destroys you and makes you want to throw your controller out the window?

Anyway, it sounds like you want a decisive 'one-game answer' from people here... so my vote is Returnal!

@voogles - Check previous post, I completely forgot about PS+!

Resi 7 is one of the free games you get for signing up, IMO better than Res8!

@voogles Don’t forget that AstroBot comes with the console and is a fantastic little platformer! I haven’t played Sackboy but if you were going to get that game just for the genre then I thought it was worth mentioning.

Returnal has also been my favourite exclusive so far. It looks and sounds fantastic (especially with a headset) and uses the new adaptive triggers really cleverly.

Miles Morales is great fun and I think the length is just about right. The main story isn’t that long but there are loads of side missions that add to the play time and don’t feel like filler. It’s another real looker too.

Ratchet and Clank is brilliant fun and also looks great and uses the adaptive triggers. However, if you’ve not played the 2018 reboot before, I think that’s the better game and has a patch to play at 60fps. I’m pretty sure that one’s in the PS+ collection too.

I haven’t played Demon’s Souls and I’m not overly fussed by Elden Ring or GT7 (not at launch anyway). So no decisions from me but that’s my two cents at least!

Thank you for taking your time to reply, I very much appreciate it!

I do have to say though, I already played most if not all of the PS4 games that are part of that Plus Collection, and I did not buy a PS5 to play PS4 games again. And regarding Returnal, I believe you that its a great experience, but I dont really feel any connection towards it when looking at gameplay footage. This might be totally wrong, but it looks boring to me and I can probably wait for a deeper sale to pick that one up. I will someday, but not right now.

Astro Playground is a great tip however, it seems like a really fun experience and its free, so whats not to like. I read alot of positive things regarding Miles Morales, more to the point of "less is sometimes more" and I will probably go for it, but I am of course a little disappointed in it still costing 60 bucks on PSN. Same goes for Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart costing a just completely senseless 80 bucks, so those two are the games I absolutely want but also the games I might still wait out for a sale to happen, if I cant find dirt cheap psn wallets somewhere online.

I will probably pick up Demons Souls and Gran Turismo 7, as these are the ones I feel alot of hype towards when I look at them and my fear is if I pick up Elden Ring now, I can never go back to DS because of its linearity.

I think being a Plus member gives me an additional 10% off of these if I remember right, so that at least is something to look out for when I am on the store for the first time again. My PS5 is arriving sometime this week, so until its arrival I shall be busy watching reviews and calculating prices. I am really hyped.

If money is tight, I'd recommend a year of ps+($60+/-) and checkout the ps collection. A lot of great games on there, if you missed the ps4 era. Looking for newer ps5-only games, I'd go with what you like. Returnal and ratchet and demon's souls are cheap at gamestop, used. But I don't know if you have gamestop or support them(eyeroll, others are steadfast against, for some reason. I just want cheap games).

Despite the digital being the cheaper console, it sounds like you'd have been better holding out for a disc version.
I can't recommend ratchet and clank for £70, but I can recommend it for £17 which is what I paid after platinuming and trading in deathloop which cost £29
