@Ravix I'm not sure what make of puppy that is, but companion confirmed thank you. That definitely bumps it up the list. I already finished one of the Spiderman DLCs, it only took just over an hour. All three of them seem to tie into the one story, I'm not sure if I want to go straight to Miles Moralis next but it's a strong maybe especially if Crimson Desert is so close. Time permitting of course, the first Spiderman was fast, I expect Crimson Desert or Kingdom Come Deliverance wouldn't be. And you still have to start Death Stranding 2.

@LtSarge I played Digimon Story before, but skipped Hackers Memory, Time Stranger is so much better and the story is amazing

@GirlVersusGame So did you end up enjoying Spider-Man 2018? I see you're playing thru the DLC now.

As for myself, I'm halfway thru Cris Tales' story now. It's an indie game with an anime inspired art style.

After I 100%/platinum it, my next game should be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge.

It's a direct sequel to the TMNT 80's cartoon, and a spiritual successor to the "Turtles in Time" game.

Thrillho

@LtSarge It is massive but not felt like a slog thus far as all the content is well written so you don't mind doing it all. It's pretty chill exploring on your horse too so I've not used fast travel too much but am doing now a little more as I seem to finally be finishing off the side quests at last so there's not much to do between villages. And I might pick up the DLC as it's 25% off at the moment. If I don't do it as part of this play through then I almost certainly never will.

@Ravix I think all I have left to do is the final poacher mission and then finish off killing the remnants of Gules' gang. The latter is a bit more annoying as you have to wait a few days between getting the missions so I suppose I'll just have to go make some more swords or potions or something

@Th3solution As I was saying, above, I defeated the first optional boss in Shadow of the Erdtree, took me two attempts, so that's an indication of my "op" level, taking into consideration that this boss is considered a "middle-order" one, in terms of falling somewhere in between the easier and harder bosses of the game, and some have even described him as a skill check. I used a summon, which had been upgraded halfway towards the max level as well, plus my build for my personal character has been upgraded the same number of times, nevertheless as others have struggled with him, I was pleased with my early success.

Would you say, that to a certain extent, that, like me, you believe you can set the difficulty for this kind of game yourself, with overlevelling early on making the mid-end game experiences in these FromSoft Souls games a cakewalk, or, avoiding such matters and choosing to go into a NG+ Cycle or whatever, making it more challenging for yourself if you choose to do that instead?

Sometimes the things you need to do to become op can be regarded as the real bosses of the game, i.e finding specific rings, farming seemingly endlessly, upgrading weapons and finding the appropriate upgrade resources etc. ,and in the case of ER, finding the materials to upgrade your summons - those are the real bosses, man!

@Tjuz You’re correct with remembering my Lost Records review. It’s squarely in the ‘decent’ category, but in my opinion not as good as the Life is Strange series. I give it credit for trying some new things — like the camcorder gameplay that you mention, and the unique protagonist. But your opinion of Swann echoes my own, although you’re correct to assume she will develop into a more relatable character over time. I think it was by design to have her seem a little childish and awkward, especially early on. I’ll be interested to hear if you feel they succeed in making the ‘coming of age’ arc worthwhile. If the video recording and editing feature sounds interesting to you then it may be worth a try @GirlVersusGame just knowing that I think the Life is Strange series have stories that seem to flow a little better and feel more cohesive. The music is similarly well done, however.

I haven’t had a chance to congratulate you on your Spider-Man journey and platinum. I’m glad it seems to have been enjoyable. Definitely keep Miles Morales in mind if/when you’re in the mood, it’s actually shorter than the first game and the story feels like it’s tighter and although the gameplay is mostly the same, Miles’s powers add some fun wrinkles to the formula. It does require a NG+ playthrough for the platinum (it’s the only of the three that does that) but I was amazed how quick the replay was when you can just skip any and all side activities and speedrun the story missions only. I never replay games, and especially immediately after finishing one, but I did so for MM for the platinum and it did not ruin the experience at all. Spider-Man 2 is a bit larger game, closer to the first game if I recall correctly and maybe even bigger, and it does start out with a bang, so your comment (a valid one) about the first game taking a little too long to warm up, that’s not an issue with SM2. In fact I think its opening hours are amongst its best.

@BlAcK_Sw0rDsMaN Nicely done with the first major DLC ‘skill check’ encounter! Indeed I think you’re right about grinding for levels and upgrades being the Soulslike ‘easy mode’. And the games usually have a few ways to manipulate the builds, even without overleveling, to make things easier. Most of the games have an early game method to get a key piece of equipment that will carry you through most of the game until your level is sufficiently balanced to take on the harder bosses. So how far along the DLC do you think you are? If I recall correctly, it’s a fairly meatly DLC so you might have quite a road still ahead of you?

@Th3solution Interesting reading your last couple of posts on HFW, I do think the game let's you get comfortable again before opening up and expanding on the old game. Overall I enjoyed HFW but for some reason I didn't put it above the first. One of my biggest annoyances for FW and i know I'm going to get a lot of disagreement for this one was actually Aloy, in the first I loved her, as a character and protagonist, in the 2nd she had some really annoying dialogue and an almost god like complex, I remember at points during the game thinking, wow she really thinks highly of herself.

Anyway strangely then I read you made a dreaded error and downloaded a new game 😂 which I was really interested to read your early thought's because believe it or not guess what game I downloaded in preparation for me finishing Death stranding and needing a Pallet filler, none other than Silent Hill 2!! I was debating, do I do a run of the Resident Evils again in preparation of Requiem and get round to playing Village, do I go for something different in Wo Long, then I saw SH2 sitting there and thought to myself, how long before it goes off ps plus, and in the end decided on downloading it. So I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts as you make your way through the game. I haven't started it yet as I only finished DS yesterday and now will need a couple of days before I can play another story game but after reading your initial thoughts, I am looking forward to it even more

@Thrillho did you definitely talk to everyone you have seen in the game so far? That was a kind of cool advancement from the first, as quest givers seemed less marked and you could definitely just find stuff at random by being nosey. But, actually, I think you are good and seem ready to advance the game by the sounds of it, so I wouldn't worry, and the world isn't going to implode so you can still find or finish stuff later anyway if you are tired of waiting, and you are probably pretty OP for some casual drinking, dancing and hobnobbing at a wedding, regardless 😉 this definitely seemed like the natural flow for all RPG lovers, though, it was obvious so early with the loose quest of 'get to the wedding' that there was plenty of player agency to make your own story flow how you want for a good deal of time. I know I did a lot, but also left a few things despite pumping many, many hours in, pre-wedding, as I was already decked out in the finest, had established a life and contacts in the region, and the timing felt right for me.

So whatever you do... Enjoy 😁

@GirlVersusGame Just some Medieval Mutt. I don't think it's a fully branded or licensed doggo, I didn't check the tags 😄 but what I do know is that he is a silly doggy. One that loves to eat spoiled hare meat and plucked chickens, whole plucked chickens.

I was also replying to you the other day, left the tab open somehwere and then kind of lost it and forgot what I was replying to. Maybe DS2 was part of it, I did nearly install it this weekend.

Did you start another game yet? I think I'm still kind of in game limbo. I'm almost tempted to just play the start of KCD2 again, like I did with 1, just to waste any gaming time until I finally commit to a full new game 😬

@MaulTsir I can definitely see what you’re talking about with HFW and Aloy. I’m only in the second area (Chain-something or other) where you get introduced to some of the world mechanics and it opens up to wander around exploring and doing side content. I’m getting back my Horizon skills gradually. I’ve found that stealth is still quite overpowered, so I’ll probably prioritize that skill tree. Interestingly, I was never very good at the ranged combat, even in the first one, so I’ll have to see if that holds true here.

But looking at the skill trees I can see that the game will really spread out into new mechanics over time and start to feel different. I know there’s eventually some flying contraptions so I look forward to that. I’m trying to keep my focus (no pun intended) on pushing the story points forward because I’ve heard that the game can be a little too long if you try to do everything. And I’m trying not to make the mistakes of wasting hours and hours exploring, only to find that I have to come back later with the appropriate equipment anyway to proceed. I’ve already run into that with several spots, including an underwater cave that warned me as I dove down that I didn’t have the equipment/skill to go further. I’m really bad about trying to clear an area before pushing through the next story point and I need to be better about that! 😅

But yes, Aloy’s slight attitude shift and everyone calling her “Savior” has made her feel a bit less relatable so far. I’ve already picked up on that. I’ve come across where they made some of the responses selectable so you can give dialogue options that are aggressive, cerebral, or emotional and heartfelt, depending on what style of Aloy you want to be and I chose the heartfelt option so far because I felt the need to humanize her a little more.

Did you end up playing the Burning Shores DLC? I don’t own it (yet?) but probably won’t unless I really want more Horizon when I finish it. But like I said, people talked about how the game drags slightly with all the side content so I suspect I won’t be looking to extend it, with the aforementioned large backlog summoning me especially. But we’ll see; I’ve heard the DLC is excellent and I might be convinced. I also heard that the Aloy character becomes even more polarizing in the DLC, so I was wondering if you played it how you felt with that.

———

But yes — really excited for you to play Silent Hill 2 alongside! I’m about 5 hours along after a couple short sessions this weekend. It’s quite excellent. The remake is very well done by Bloober Team, but there’s some 90’s jank that still gets through. Nevertheless I’m having a great time with it.

@Ravix I'll give him a better name than that, Sir Barks A'lot perhaps. I read that food spoils too but not if it's dried, also that brewed potions and things get created or filled in bulk. I may have read where to get early lock-picks too. I researched to see if it was the kind of game where you could just loot everything not nailed down and it does appear to be true. You were probably replying about Death Stranding 2? I can't remember what I said other than that something clicked after two hours play and I turned it off. I still don't know why. Either it was the deliveries which I liked in the first game or something else. I'd never had a 'do you really want to spend your life like this' moment before in gaming, I thought it was responsibility, but that didn't make sense either. It was really weird. I love fetch quests and that game is just one huge fetch quest.

There was big hype there for the game, the only game I wanted to play day one that year. But after two hours the hype was gone somewhere. I was asked offline why I stopped after two hours and had no answer. Instead I went outside, sat under a tree and did some deep musing. I'd almost wonder if there was something in the dialogue, it's a mystery. Then you said you haven't played it either but do have it, I'm aware games are expensive so when a big title like that sits idle there's usually a reason? Is it because you know there's so much fetch/questing? Does it seem bleak? That's more or less what I'd originally asked.

Did you start another game yet? I think I'm still kind of in game limbo. I'm almost tempted to just play the start of KCD2 again, like I did with 1, just to waste any gaming time until I finally commit to a full new game 😬

  • I started the Spiderman DLCs last night and finished the Black Cat one. We did end up going out but called it a night after an hour, I fell asleep and my head hit the table, not good. Kind of funny though, either way we left and I slept for a while then tried the DLC. I prefer Black Cat to Mary Jane who will probably cause Spiderman's death due to lack of actual intimacy, I don't know how he can shoot his web straight in that situation. I'm pretty sure men lose their minds if someone Mary Jane's them like that, so I most certainly prefer Black Cat. Not to mention she is very good at liberating shiny things. I got maybe half way through the second DLC then sleep caught up to me again and I never made it to three in the AM. I'm told it should be a quiet week, that will help move things forward. I'll probably start Miles Moralis after the DLCs, if not I can see it being pushed back and getting skipped. He cancelled a trip for tonight and cleared my tutoring this week, I have to catch up on rest, that means a lot more gaming. I don't want to be around certain military anniversaries this week. I'm not even back in England twenty four hours so it's probably for the best, then we'll see what next week brings. Kingdom Come Deliverance won't be this week, it seems a little heavy, sluggish and serious. I don't think that would be the best idea. Spiderman isn't exactly whimsical but it is what I'd call a light/fast game and I need something not so serious this week.

@KidRyan So did you end up enjoying Spider-Man 2018? I see you're playing thru the DLC now.

  • It took a while to kick in. The first half was a little slow and I wasn't too interested in the story, I wouldn't say mundane is fair because there were activities and some light clobbering of various people. I don't know if it was purposeful but there was a certain level of predictability too and it might have been down to subtle facial animations or something else. I knew Mr Li wasn't above board, I didn't trust him at all and knew right away he was the Leader of the Demons. Then there were the PMCs, I predicted that some PMC force would take to the streets to tackle the rising crime and to pose as a higher threat to the player. I did enjoy the combat a lot more than I thought I would, I didn't know he used gadgets. That floral one where to spin in the air shooting web like a spinning top? It cleared huge groups in seconds and throwing things was a lot of fun. My favorite part was the last fight/scene with Dr Octavis, it was written and performed so well. My only criticism would be one or two of those environmental challenges, particularly the bandwidth one where you have to swing through layers of 'killer bandwidth' while it moves up and down, that was really badly designed. Other than that the game was enjoyable, not my favorite game of all time but I can see why fans of the series might see it as a manna from Heaven and why Xbox users want to see it ported so badly.

I've watched those old Turtles cartoons. They hold up very well and I've seen their toy-line too on The Toys That Made Us. I really liked the detail and colours, I don't know if they make toys like that anymore. Maybe video-games replaced a lot of things like that, I'd hope not. I don't think I've played a Turtles game before, they look very beat em' uppy and I'm not too crazy about button mashing, that's how you break nails. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, we're probably due a big Turtles game in the style of Spiderman with a large sandbox. There's so much potential there especially if they add things like the van, the character roster from the cartoons, and a funky soundtrack. I'm not sure how they would manage four characters, there's so much focus on the team.

@GirlVersusGame “…I need something not so serious this week…” While I endorse Miles Morales too, I also will put a pitch to consider another walking sim called The Stanley Parable, if you’re in the mood for more walking sims. It’s quite short though, a couple hours only, depending on how you want to approach it. One might call it lighthearted and whimsical, but it’s definitely a game that is best to go in blind and discover for yourself. I think it was a PS+ game but I’m not certain.

  • That's okay I think I fell behind on some notifications, it's hard to be sure sometimes and my hours have been quite sporadic with one day bleeding into the next. It was a very easy platinum though, I'm assuming they wanted to make it manageable for the large number of people who would most definitely play it and locking that sense of achievement behind something so hard wouldn't have been fair or realistic. I did like what I've seen of Miles so far. The Mary Jane stealthing was a little overused while the segments with Miles were a lot more meaningful. I appreciated seeing the character development too, I didn't have that with many others in the game. It was more a case of assuming players would be fully up to date on the series/world, but I can see why they didn't waste time on that either. I'd play Miles's game just for that ground level experience and growth. They introduced just enough of him for me to want to see more. Like Starship Troopers 'would you like to know more?', I do, they did it right.

Spider-Man 2 is a bit larger game, closer to the first game if I recall correctly and maybe even bigger, and it does start out with a bang, so your comment (a valid one) about the first game taking a little too long to warm up, that’s not an issue with SM2. • That makes me a lot more likely to try that one too. I saw some obvious review bombing and I think it's obvious why, there were fresh comments about a peaceful protest after Bluepoint was shuttered. It was within a couple of hours of the announcement. The real reviews sounded promising.

I do want to try Lost Records too, I just need to balance the pace of the week. I've been burning all kinds of candles at both ends, I'd hate for that to ruin a memorable game experience. I'm sure there were games in the past ruined by playing them while tired, I'd prefer to be firing on all cylinders. It's fine for the Spiderman DLC, there's not much a story there, something like Lost Records would be one of those once in a lifetime experiences. I'd want to experience and remember it in the right mood. Life is Strange went to many different places, if it goes to similar places then I should hold off for a while. The part in one of the Life is Strange games where Chloe died, that hit like a freight train. There was that same feeling in Cyberpunk when Evelyn Parker was found, it posed so many personal questions. I turned the game off and tapped out for a couple of days. I relate with very specific parts of games if at all, that was a rough scene. I'd gone from 'a doll-chip sounds quite relatable and useful' to 'oh God'. If Lost Tapes goes to certain places I'll wait until I'm ready to go there too.

@GirlVersusGame that's the hook, it is serious in the way the game is designed - how you have to think and react with your own brain and treat it differently to 'just a game' - and in the tone of the main story, at times. But it is also silly because you are just a dumb lad in a dumb world and you are thus able to do lots of dumb things 😁

Also, if you don't know what I mean about having to think about the game less like a game, I can give an example I can recall... Someone on Reddit asked why they kept dying as they were bleeding. They said they ate some bread to heal and did everything they could think of... 👀 well, generally bread sates hunger, bandages stop bleeding, and time and medicines heal, like, you know, real life. It is still gamey to an extent, of course it is, but sometimes people are so wrapped up in games being games that they forget to think logically even for a second, and KCD generally acts and rewards a more logical approach. And makes you look silly if you bypass logic 😁

Another example was someone was following a marker to find a character that you didn't really know the location of. But the marker in that situation is just a general area to actively search, so they weren't looking at the actual world around them to find them, they were just following the compass around in circles and had to ask online how to complete this simple task.

It is kind of where the world is heading with people resorting to ask AI to explain everything, too, tbh. Rather than using thei rown senses or even spending a second thinking for themselves they just ask an ai that will likely get it wrong. So maybe we need more games like KCD to balance out this trend 🙌

There is also a hardcore mode that makes it even harder and less gamey. But probably best not to start on that. Although I think you'd be well capable, it is probably best to learn all the game mechanics first.

A fun aspect would also be the trying things to bend the intended path or find solutions to problems. So there is a quest that features a competition to hunt the most hares. During the hunting time, instead of hunting like normal, I decided to run away, steal a horse, visit a butchers and buy some hares, then I returned and won the contest with my sack of freshly purchased hare meat 😁 A satisfying conclusion.

@Ravix Whoever thought eating bread would stop bleeding in any game, I can't even, but that does sound like reddit. Maybe they'd only played a particular type of game before then. You make it sound a lot more like a survival game which I'm more accustomed too. I'm sure I played something very recently that had a bandage system too and there was a perk to decrease the risk of bleeding from attacks. It might have been Infinite Wealth, there were men with Wolverine like claws, but in general mechanics like bleeding and spoiled meat can be the difference between life and death in a survival game. The Long Dark is a good example. Otherwise known as Ravix will never play this game.

I know they are two very different games but without bandages you'll bleed out and without food you'll starve. It sounds like Warhorse wanted to implement a little more of that realism into their game and if someone hasn't played a lot of survival games that might seem less obvious. Or reddit is just reddit. I definitely appreciate when RPGs go that little extra distance with things like perishable foods and items that need to be repaired. That's why I liked survival mode in Fallout and in Skyrim, it made both games a lot more realistic. I'm still not sure how I'll approach combat. I can't unlearn real life fencing, it would definitely impact in-game combat and cause a kind of psychological shift. I'm already thinking of the weight and difference to response, then there are the target areas and strike types. Maybe if bows are absolutely viable It could be odd not creating a character too, I like my Khajiit, they have wares if you have coin. I really just want to borrow things and sell them for a mark-up, I don't think it's a lot to ask for in a game. Hopefully that's possible too.

Another example was someone was following a marker to find a character that you didn't really know the location of. But the marker in that situation is just a general area to actively search, so they weren't looking at the actual world around them to find them, they were just following the compass around in circles and had to ask online how to complete this simple task.

  • I'm definitely not playing it until this tiredness lifts, just reading that part felt like going in mental circles and that's without pressing any buttons. Spiderman was easy in-terms of navigation. I never had to look at the map, if something crime-wise came up I'd hear the call out and naturally knew the real life layout. It definitely helped my sense of direction, in that I had one. If I started Kingdom Come Deliverance today I'd wait until it got dark then just start seeing what I could borrow or liberate followed by finding a way to gain XP. I wouldn't follow the story if I had the luxury not to. At least until there was nothing left to do. In games I live by 'And Caesar wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer'. Once that happens I turn to a games main story. You should see my Civilization Six playthroughs, they take so long when the A.I. tries to fight back. The game is over when I takeover one hundred percent of the game world by any means possible. Which isn't as exciting in the newer game, but someone did say the Manhattan Project can be researched so there's hope. I can't think of even one game where I don't apply that methodology.

You said Kingdom Come Deliverance has bandit camps too, I want to take those out as soon as possible. That puppy would be my main goal, after that would be finding a tutor for literacy, you said before that he can't read. I did keep notes. I'm not touching hardcore mode, not yet anyway. It might not even be one of those 'must platinum right now' games, more of a curiosity really. Sort of like playing new genres, I'm curious why it's so highly regarded and the only way to find out is to try it for myself. That Spiderman playthrough came about for the same reasons.

Yes stay away from hardcore mode, in that mode you don’t know where the hell you are, yes you have a map but there isn’t a big red mark saying “you are here”. I looked at the map, I looked at where I was and thought there are loads of green fields on this map.

Do enjoy the game, take it slowly and spend time away from the bandit camps, take time to enjoy the scenary perhaps pick some flowers (seriously).

@GirlVersusGame I'm glad to hear you overall enjoyed Spidey 2018, please do let me know when you start Miles Morales?

I've seen random episodes of the 80's TMNT on TV and VHS, but I mainly grew up on the 2003 cartoon. Also loved the 2012 TMNT cartoon too.

I'm unsure if I ever owned any TMNT toys though, I was more of a Power Rangers and Transformers kid growing up. Only "toys" I still have are mostly plushies, I love hugging them.
