Hi all

I've been reading regularly and I look forward to chatting about PS here.

So, about 2 weeks ago, I pre-ordered a PS5. I've been playing PS since One... yada yada yada. But I have concerns:

  • I was never crazy about the design of the PS5 itself and I don't like the Xbox-ish controllers
  • I'm irritated, that 2 months before launch, I'm relying on rumours and leaks about the dimensions about the console. Last I checked the Sony website, none of that is on there. Why do I have to look at images from the FCC?
  • I have always had concerns about the proper balancing of the console, either horizontally or vertically. The more I see of it, I think it has some or (a lot) of wobble potential. How after all these years did Sony settle on this kind of a design?
  • Reading that it's the biggest console ever made, and it makes the PS3 look small...what happened?
  • Why have we not seen the OS? I wondered were they still tweaking it? Did they have problems with it? No, it's apparently being shipped by plane across the world as we speak to retailers, the console and OS are finished.
  • There is so much confusion about what the console can and can't do. Least of all, is the original NVME removable or not? Is it only that extra storage can be plugged in? Where we add or remove parts? Why is this a mystery? What brands/what price/what price/what performance are these external NVMEs?
  • Why has there been no final Sony show to clarify all of this? All we got was games. No more excuses about Covid, if they could put Cerney in a room earlier in the year with camera people to do a tech deep-dive, they could definitely have copied what they did with the PS4 and chat about it, clear up things, actually SHOW OFF THE CONSOLE
  • I'm annoyed about the €70 price of A+++ games and Sony's defence of that. I didn't ask for $100m budget games so maybe reign that in? Especially as we are back to tough economic times. Cop on. I read that MS is saying €60 for new As is where they're going? It's at least more reasonable.

I think there are too many unknowns 2 months before launch.

I want to see what the 2nd gen version looks like. Forget Pros, never have we needed the slim version of a console more than now. I want that one.

Help.

Am I alone?

I think i will keep my PS5 vertically as that's the best for heat as for looks I think it looks alright.

There will be a black version next year no doubt once stock levels have settled.

Can't wait to see inside the machine and see it cooling method. I think 2 fans this time round going by the vents at the back.

Feel free to add me on Switch.

Hoes does one pre-order a PS5 before they are available to pre-order?

Hello.

I have a PS5 with a disc drive pre-ordered. I'm not concerned about its stability with orientation but I do think it's ugly as sin.

I don't care too much about the UI since we spend very little time there. However I do share your concerns regarding upgradability for the internal storage. I have an 8TB HDD for PS4 games but if the NVMe SSD is as unique as they claim and standard PCIe NVMe's won't cut it then knowing Sony we'll have another Vita proprietary situation on our hands.

Price if games? Abso-friggin-lutely this bothers me! I think £70 is taking the pi**!
Folks have said that prices haven't increased for two gens, in the UK that is false, they've increased from £35 to £42-45 then increased again to an average of £50-55 and now £70 in the last 15 years!
I buy a lot of games and at launch so.this is going to cost me a fortune unless I practice being selective with my purchases.

I've had this discussion on Twitter only to be called "poor" "whiney" "entitled" and other unkind things by defenders of the community.

I'm far from poor, but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to question greed.
An increase to £60 I can stomach as fair, but £70 they're pushing their luck!

@GADG3Tx87 To expand the storage you use off the shelf storage cards which slot into the PS5. They will still be quite expensive as they are quite new but the prices will go down eventually. Microsoft are the ones using proprietary storage which will most likely be more expensive.

And yep with games you are going to have to be more selective with how many games you get at launch and wait for the prices to come down. Sites like amazon, shopto, simply games are usually good at offering competitive prices.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

That’s the trouble, most ps5 users will still buy the games at full price and those that are unhappy and are vocal about the price rises like yourself will also still buy them. Sony doesn’t care either way as long as everyone is buying at full price. A very small minority will wait 6 months+ for a sale or just buy used. I fall into the latter category

Nice to see I'm not alone! So price inflation is evident in the games in the UK? Yikes they are some jumps. I mentioned €70, but when I look up Gamestop, there are some at €70, but many are in fact €80 and €90 - and that's original titles, non-remastered, no DLC! The world economy is in the toilet, this isn't reasonable. I just get images in my head of California startups having buffet breakfasts and lunches on these $100m+ gaming budgets. If someone works in one of these studios and has different results, I'll step down, but on $100m+ I don't think they're counting pennies! I'm not paying for that show. I've never earned more money in my career than now, but the value just doesn't add up for me.

I was partially motivated to put this post up, because of a post on here from one of the staff writers, who honestly and passionately put, that despite being a long-time PS fan, he's not paying £70 games. I admire the honesty and reality! So it pains me to ... write any of this. But given the reaction, I think I'm 'speaking against God' on here...

I cancelled my PS5 pre-order in store 1 hour ago. Will I add something else really controversial? I've always said the Xbox S is terrible value, I think beyond 2 years or so it would age fast given it's specs. But... when the new Harry Potter game comes out next year, Microsoft said expect circa €60 for new games, I could get the Xbox S for €300 and 3 games and still have €20 spare compared to just getting the PS5 on it's own! Nevermind their €70/80/90 games. The S wouldn't last long, as tech innovates so rapidly, but I could get 2 years maybe 3. Plus, it's tiny and while not my favourite design, it's neater than the PS5 mammoth. I can't believe I just wrote this!!

@LEDGlory AAA games are actually €80 now. But they tend to drop in price quickly. And if people don't like the new price and don't buy the games, they will probably drop even sooner. I'm fine with paying €60-70 for a new God of War for example. But there's plenty of games that should've been cheaper. Just wait for a price drop.

Personally, my response to the high game prices it that I will simply buy fewer games, and likely not at launch. I have way too many on PS4 as it is so to be honest I could do with a good reason to not buy so many damn games. It's very easy in games circles the line between "need" and "want" to be blurred.

Towards the end of the PS4 era I've been fewer and fewer games at launch. I think the only exception has been The Last of Us 2, which even then I think I picked up about a week after launch. Otherwise I haven't bought a game new since Spider-Man. I've saved a buttload of cash, and I've still got more games than I can physically manage to play. It's up to us as customers when we buy our games. No one "needs" the newest titles at launch. If you don't agree with the price, sit tight and wait for it to go down.

Numbers are everything for Sony and other publishers. If the numbers go down you can bet there'll be a reduction sooner rather than later. But if people keep buying them, they'll keep charging. Vote with your wallet and don't get caught up in the need to have the newest, latest thing the second it's available.
