Topic: External SSD; recommendations and downsides

As per the title, does anyone use an external SSD?

If so, what do you recommend please and are there downsides to using an SSD?

I'm considering the Samsung T7 Touch 1TB SSD or the Seagate Firecuda 1TB Gaming SSD. Neither are particularly cheap but, I'd like to start sideloading my PS4 back catalogue to an external as my PS5 game collection starts to build.

Any advice welcome .

Until Sony whitelists some SSD's for the internal slot i don't think you should go to the bother and expense of getting an external SSD (will you be buying one for the internal slot later and if so will you have any use for the external SSD then?),

Instead I recommend you just get a 1tb or 2tb external hard drive, their not particularly expensive and work fine for playing/storing ps4 games and while keeping your systems SSD for ps5 games

I have a 1tb portable external hard drive attached to my ps5, because it a portable it gets its power through the ps5 so there are no extra power cables needed and it's body is somewhat like a phones in shape so it sits on the top of my ps5 nicely, (I actually have my controllers charger sitting on it so its very neat)

It works well too, I have no problems with loading delays or anything and I have a good few games on it, but i still have plenty of room if I wanna try some new game!

I bought a western digital blue 1tb nvme m.2 and enclosure to make my own external ssd, cheaper than a pre built one. Ssd is faster for sure definitely worth it if you have the budget for one.

@Pditty1980 Thanks for your reply .

In answer to your first question as to why invest in an external; I am used to doing the upgrades on hard drives on PlayStations for myself, family and friends but, I have decreasing strength, I don't have full dexterity in all my limbs and don't anticipate I will be able to remove the outer shell and upgrade the PS5, as I have previous consoles.

I haven't tried to remove the face plates and unless somebody was to assure me they literally just pop off, which I cna't imagine they do, I don't wish to try. It's not easy for me to man-handle the unit regardless.

So, for my needs, I believe an external is the best way forward.

@Chevyguy Thanks for your reply and your suggestion.

I will research that option .

@Woogy

There are videos on YouTube which show you how to remove the faceplate and open the panel for the internal sot!

Your welcome, if you have a big library and don't mind the extra 10 or secs or more loading I'd go with a hdd. I had some extra money and wanted something close to the internal speed til we can upgrade on board storage.

The custom IO in the PS5 is ‘so’ unique that I personally wouldn’t consider installing any SSD until Sony provides guidance. I’m keen to get one installed too... would’ve bought one on the PS5 release if the information (that I refer to) had of been available at the time. The way the IO works is that it will ‘basically’ be streaming info from the SSD during gameplay (on Sony 1st party at least) rather than just loading information at super high speeds between gameplay segments. There is a reason that Sony has not provided the information necessary to select an SSD yet, so I would definitely advise patience.

I have used a Seagate Barracuda 2 TB external SSD for the past couple years, first with my PS4 Pro and now with my PS5. It does make a noticeable difference with loading times and is whisper quiet compared to the HDD I was using.

With the PS5 strapped for space and no external options for PS5 games I keep my PS4 games solely on the external SSD.

I have no faith in Sony enabling the expansion storage option for PS5 games anytime soon as it took over 3 years to add the external hard drive functionality to the PS4.

Thank you for your further reply @Chevyguy and for your replies and insight @colonelkilgore and @aj102404 .

I've watched a few videos on Youtube, as per @Pditty1980 suggestion.

It occurs to me, some of the uploaders had obviously removed the panels several times and made it look easier than those doing it on videos for what looks like maybe only the second time.

So, I'm still a little hesitant about attempting to remove the faceplates myself but, think it prudent to wait a little longer to see what news comes from Sony re additional internal drives.

I still may opt for the Seagate, based on @aj102404 experience purely for the fact my wife has a credit she said I can use via an online store and they have the Firecuda external SSD, that's the only reason I thought to explore my options after being prompted (yet) again my drive is full on the PS5.

Food for thought, I'll think on it.

Thank you all.

To be honest when the time comes and we can use the SSD Slot, I too will be quite hesitant about attempting to remove the faceplates myself and I will probably get one of my brothers, who is more technically minded and less nervous to help me!

I wouldn't worry too much about removing the faceplates, it is not too difficult, just requires a wee bit of force to remove them. It is comparable to removing one of the top halves on the OG PS4. I've done it a couple of time to hoover up the dust and not had any problems. And I wouldn't class myself as being technically minded or anything like that.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Cheers @JohnnyShoulder and again @Pditty1980 .

I've come to a compromise with my wife, she's getting me the Samsung T5 external SSD to use for now until such time Sony allow the use of the expansion slot.

Then she wants to use the drive, on the proviso I load it will all my FLAC rips of my trance albums.

Win/win.

Just cos we're wobbly don't mean we still can't party! On our own of course, observing all the COVID rules, sigh.

An external SSD for the PS4 games is a waste of money. You get a saving of around 13-20 secs but on some games you're still having to wait over a minute. Go for the storage size and buy a HDD, then when you want to play a game, copy over to the internal PS5 SSD. I've got the WD 8TB Gamedrive, it comes with 2 charging ports for your controllers and works a treat.

On FF7 Remake, Monster hunter world or RDR 2 you'll save over 60 seconds.
