Topic: Demon Souls Remastered. Is it, isn't it?

I know there is a lot of speculation around right now, and whilst I normally don't like to add fuel to the fire as far as rumours go, I do feel, this particular game does potentially hold some creedance, and it's for one thing specifically.

In the "State of Play" a month or so ago, they were discussing future releases and the host touched upon an upcoming announcement that had yet to be uncovered.

I believe he said something along the lines of "Well, it's not been announced as of yet, but let's just say that the soul still burns strong with that one...."... I can't remember the exact quote, but it was something to that effect.

Prior to this state of play, the word got out that Bluepoint was potentially working on it's next big remake, and I believe Bluepoint have already stated that their next remaster will be their biggest, and most popular project to date.

When you consider this, and the fact that the game was called out prior to the state of play broadcast, AND the host alluding to a very compelling comparison to the game in a potential future reveal, it really makes it very likely that this may actually be a thing.

I'm interested to know what other peoples thoughts are on this, and whether people agree, disagree, or think the whole idea is completely preposterous to begin with?

@Grindagger I think we are going over old ground here slightly, as I think it has already been discussed. Push Square might have even published an article about it. I think that was from back in October he said that and has dropped more hints about it too. There was also a tweet from bluepoint which referenced a lot of old playstation games. It's very possible that it will be a launch ps5 game, but nothing has been confirmed. So until it has, I'm not getting much hopes up as they have been crushed many times in the past.

We are now in a world of people being offended for other people who they think should be offended, who arent offended.

Never having played Demon Souls, I am not really sure about the hype for a remake. I have heard it is quite a bit different from Dark Souls, but it’s still the same basic genre, right? We have three Dark Souls games with DLC, Bloodborne, and Sekiro all available on PS4. Not to mention the Soulsborne knock-offs aplenty. So to remaster the game that started it all, although it sounds historically pretty cool, I have a sinking suspicion that it won’t really hold as much hype and interest as we all think it will. I guess it depends how much the game would stay true to form, versus making quality of life improvements over the original.
It’s just that Bluepoint’s remaster work before has been with seemingly more unique and seminal games, like Shadow of the Colossus, Gravity Rush, Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, etc. Maybe I’m underselling the public appetite for From style games, but it seems like From has done a great job keeping a constant stream of their games available. After playing Sekiro, will people still be enamored with Demon Souls? (I speak in ignorance here since I’ve only played some of the original Dark Souls and Bloodborne.)

@Th3solution The original Demon Souls was an absolute trendsetter when it came out back in 2009.

No one had seen anything of it's like back then, and it caused a rift amongst the gaming community with it's strict difficulty setting.

There would be (i think) a necessity for some QOL changes to the original, such as the summoning system, which back then on PS3 infrastructure was extremely basic, and required all manner of procedures just to manage to successfully summon a friend into your world.

When you compare it to the ease that you can do it in the later Dark Souls games it makes the whole system seem rather basic. However, the game itself was excellent and worthy of as much praise as the Dark Souls games imho. It also has a respectable following, whilst it might not be the best in the series, it's still a solid addition, and worthy of a remaster for the current generation to enjoy.

@Th3solution I think there is still enough interest in the game to issue a remaster. There are a load of people like me that came over from Xbox 360 that never played it that are mahoosive fans of From Software recent games. I think enough time has passed for people who originally played it to want another go at it with a new lick of paint and a few qol tweaks. Personally I would want more of a remake than a remaster, as the good as Dark Remastered was to play, I think a bit more effort could have gone into it.

@JohnnyShoulder Actually, their 2018 version of Shadow of the Colossus was technically a remake, so Demon’s Souls might be built new from the ground up as well. I am definitely one of those who never played it - not because I didn’t have a PS3, but because I was intimidated by the game. By the time Dark Souls rolled around at a cheap price point, I picked up an old pre-owned copy as my first foray into the genre. I will probably try a Demon’s Souls remake/remaster on PS5, if it actually really exists.

I’d definitely play a Demon’s Souls remake, it’s the only Soulsborne I haven’t played yet. I actually need to go back to Dark Souls 2 first though, there’s just one boss I haven’t beaten solo across the entire series and that’s Sir Alonne. That game isn’t particularly good but I’ve played far worse tbh. I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about Demon’s Souls so if they make the necessary changes then it could be a great launch title.

A great game at the time, but you only need to watch a Let's Play to see how badly it's aged.

It's going to take a fair overhaul to bring it up to today's standards, and even more so when you consider it's looking like a launch window title. Still, if anyone can do it, it's Bluepoint. PS4 Shadow of the Colossus was unbelievable.

That's if it is indeed Demon's Souls, of course. Could still be Croc Remastered.

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

As long as Croc doesn't have tank controls @Gremio108 I'm all for it! 😅

Like you say though, when I ended up replaying it in November I found it really needs an overhaul. For me a "Dark Souls Remastered" remaster won't cut it at all with that janky-ness.

Pluuuuuus there's Elden Ring to consider... I'm more likely to play that then Demon's Souls ever again as even if it is lovingly remade and updated... I personally feel only Boletaria castle (and the first part of the Tower Of Latria) has good level design... The other areas are fairly poor (Especially the Valley of Defilement)

I'm honestly rather suprised myself at how indifferent I am to the prospect.

... I would actually prefer Croc

@Foxy-Goddess-Scotchy @Gremio108 I had forgotten about Elden Ring. Even more competition in the increasingly crowded dark fantasy Souls-like genre.

Maybe they will revamp the maps to make them better. And the jankiness will certainly be ironed out.
And if it is a PS5 launch game, it’ll sell really well regardless. Console launch games always do.

But Croc Souls does sound infinitely more appealing.

Croc Souls: Prepare to Ker-Splat Edition... I think I'm ok with that @Gremio108

Well if it is getting remade let's hope they change the tendancy system too @Th3solution as that's a poorly implimented bugbear of the original game's design too.

Ya don't wanna be stuck at half/60% health through the game in soul form or die in human form, making the enemies hit even harder and lowering your total health... Not particularly great design in my eyes 😅

and I'm not surprised you forgot about Elden Ring as it has only had that one trailer and hadn't been seen or heard from again. But the addition of Gerorge R.R. Martin to an official Souls-like title is one hell of an interesting prospect...

If I am being selfish about this I do hope it's actually The Legend Of Dragoon or Dark Cloud personally.

Of the two Dark Cloud would be the game closer to Shadow of the Colossus in design and scope plus out of all the games possible that Bluepoint is working on it's the one that possibly could be tinkered the most without as much fan uproar.

Legend Of Dragoon would be neat and we could do with a Jrpg in the official Sony games lineup.

Though it being released after FFVII remake I shudder to think of the reviews as when it originally released it was decried for being too similar to FFVII... Despite the fact it's barely alike aside from some superficial character designs of the villian having silver hair and your typical globe trotting affair.

Plus it'd probably be made more into an action rpg...

I'm only inviting the reviewers to bash it all over again 😂

I wouldn't be against this either. I loved both Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2 for you americans), also a huge Legend Of Dragoon fan.

It would be a win, win, win situation if any of those 3 are the games in question. I have fond memories playing all of them.

As far as Demon Souls go, i kind of liked the system they had in place, it's what made the game unique in it's own way, it was an unpolished gem, and that too is half the reason that many people found fond about it, with it's own level of quirkness, and unfleshed out systems.

No doubt, IF bluepoint were the people completely remaking it from the ground up, I would like to think they'd at least fix the multiplayer aspect, beyond that, I'd be happy with just the graphic overhaul, and remove the jankyness (which was just a teething issue for a newly ventured game).

I think it's likely to be true ,given all the teases and recent tweets from the company responsible, however, I wouldn't bet my house on it as their "big blockbuster", highly touted, high;ly anticipated, eagerly awaited game might be something else entirely, and whilst no one knows for sure, I intend to find out! (See if anyone gets that reference in the last line of this post).

@Draco_V_Ecliptic Currently roaming about Huntsman’s Copse, wishing I had a save right before him since the game just isn’t very good. About Demon’s Souls Remastered, I’m not sure to be honest. Given that FromSoft are already working on Elden Ring, I don’t think they’d entrust gameplay improvements to Bluepoint. Graphics maybe but not core gameplay.

@nessisonett Yeah, I think they are probably highly picky about who gets involved in their games, and let's face it, if it ain't got that Miyazaki kick, it ain't worth it (reference to Bloodborne).

Why do you think so many people love DS2 if it's not that good? What do you think appeals to them about the game?

@Draco_V_Ecliptic To be honest, I’m not sure people do love Dark Souls 2, it’s almost universally met with apathy whenever it’s mentioned these days. There’s just so many annoying mechanics despite the overall difficulty being a lot easier than the first and third games. Losing health each death is just nonsense, it actively undermines the key concept of dying and learning a bit each time. Enemies also disappear after being killed roughly 10 times, I can understand it’s to stop soul farming but it was never an issue in the other games and thus makes areas pitifully easy if you spend 10 minutes killing every enemy. A lot of the bosses are pretty lame, there’s just too many in total. The only reason I can think of that would make people like the game is the fact it’s called Dark Souls.

@nessisonett Yet you still feel the need to destroy Sir Alonne? On Facebook you get a lot of comments saying "Why does DS2 get so much hate? It's amazing" etc. , but I assume you're not in the same groups as me on Facebook.

@Draco_V_Ecliptic Sir Alonne is the one guy left to kill. I just have to kill him and then I can consider the Dark Souls games truly complete so I can push through the bad mechanics for that sole reason. I genuinely do not see why people would think 2 is better than 1 or 3, or even Bloodborne to be honest, there’s something missing from the experience. If the Demon’s Souls thing is real though, I’d be glad to play it so that I can properly consider the series complete.
