Platinum #176 The Order: 1886

My first trophy popped all the way back on 25/01/2017 and to this day I have no idea why I didn't go for the platinum back then.... but here we are now and have to say, I LOVED replaying the game, the combat was really polished even by today's standards, the story and characters were engaging, it's funny because if this game came out today the "internet" would call it woke and full of girl bosses, guess it dodged that bullet at least. Also I don't kinda engine they were using by my god they cooked! The two things I didn't like about it were the "collectables" were naff and frame rate gave me a head ache for the first couple of hours, either way this game is brilliant and deserves a remaster/sequel and everything in between, I'll finish by leaving this very poignant screenshot.

@Oram77 😄 The Order is definitely an underrated gem. Taken out from the firestorm of its release and the controversy surrounding its short runtime in the context of its $60 price tag, it’s actually a really well crafted game with some really good ideas. I had mentioned it as one if the sequels I ‘wish that we would get but never will’ over on the other thread. Perhaps you already saw that and it’s what motivated you to go back to it or maybe we’re just on the same wavelength having thought about that long-forgotten game at the same time. 😅

@Oram77 Congrats! It really is an underrated gem. I loved the combat and the guns/weaponry on offer, not to mention the interesting plot and shooting werewolves. Top tier game. And graphically it more than holds its own today, it was certainly a sight to behold back then!

@nessisonett You really are a glutton for punishment when it comes to getting the platinums in a series of games!

I played the hell out of BL2 and the Pre Sequel but got nowhere near the platinums but mostly as I only ever played as one character. I never picked the other games up, partly on principle.

Is the Telltale game going to be included in your play throughs? If not, it should as it was a great game (and a much easier platinum too).

@Thrillho I’ve never played Tales or the original game so I was slightly lost given a few characters turn up in later games! I think Tales is one of the first games I ever got through PS Plus though, I know for certain my first month was the Resi 1 remake and Transformers Devastation so it was a decent month (Oct 2016 I think) but yeah Tales was right around them too it’s super far back in my game list.

Congratulations to @AgentCooper for Wolverine, @CaptD for both Until Dawn and Switchback, @nessisonett for Borderlands 3, and @Oram77 for The Order: 1886. Excellent work, and a great community haul for this past week!

As for me, I had to leave Lara in the Louvre when I heard about the latest PS Classics trophy patch...

aye those Tomb Raider collections are crazy on PS5… pretty sure you get 3 plats per collection on PS4 but only one on the 5!

Yeah, they're a bit of a mess, but they make up for it in sheer volume. Since you get both versions when you buy them digitally (or claim them via PS Plus), I have the collections' PS4 ports installed on my Pro, so next time I get the itch I'll hopefully be able to increase my haul.

It's nice that they didn't feel the need to tie the trophies to the in-game challenges (as far as I know!) so you don't need to do every single one of them, but I have still found myself reloading to get full stealth runs even when they're not really "needed".

Sign of a great game, right there! All that practice should make the platinum a breeze!

@Werehog Congrats on your Star Wars trophies, that was very quick. It felt like yesterday that I'd read The Phantom Menace had been given a platinum trophy. How did you get both? did you play one on PS5 and then when you installed the PS4 version it was automatic? as in it saw one platinum and then popped the other? How long did it take? is it accurate to the movie?

oh yeah, Platinium trophy nr 3. I got it playing Cocoon. Which is a beautiful game with some puzzles and some mindbending trickery. Beautiful scenery, nice music and easy to understand what to do. Got the trophy in one playthrough and thats how it should be. All these games that require you to play it through a bunch of times has something to learn from this little gem. All in all play this little beauty

Platinum 43: Return to Monkey Island

My first experience with Return to Monkey Island was originally on the Switch, so I was pleasantly surprised to realise I'd completely forgotten I had it sitting in my PS5 library!

I absolutely loved revisiting Monkey Island. The humour, the characters, the puzzles and that unmistakable charm are all still there. It manages to feel nostalgic while bringing something fresh to the series, and it's just a genuinely lovely game to spend a few evenings with.

My biggest bugbear, however, was going for the trophies involving the trivia cards. Having to answer questions correctly and then pray to the RNG gods that you'd actually get the card you needed was an exercise in patience. Particularly when hunting down the card with the coordinates for Cogg Island. Nothing quite like knowing you've got the answer right but still having to cross your fingers and hope the game takes pity on you, with the next spawn rate of cards.

Despite that little frustration, I had a fantastic time with it. It's a wonderful reminder of why this series is so beloved, and I'm glad I finally got around to revisiting it on PlayStation.

Congratulations to @Skarasny and @DangerousChicken for their latest platinums! Always good to hear of when a platinum is (mostly) enjoyable to obtain!

First of all, thanks for the congrats!

So, I never auto-pop trophies. No judgement to those who do, but I feel like it kinda defeats the point. Trophies mark specific feats with their timestamp data, and commemorating the moment I installed a second port of a game isn't something I'm particularly interested in doing. Again, that's just my personal stance. All power to those who engage in auto-popping (especially with huge 80+ hour RPGs or whatever).

How Long to Beat will tell you that The Phantom Menace is somewhere between an eight and nine hour game, and for your first playthrough, that's a valid figure. It takes me three, maybe four if I get distracted by the rich environmental detail and humourous diversions in the Tatooine levels. It's one of my all-time favourite games, and probably one I have spent the most time playing across my entire life, so I know it inside and out, and I'd been checking for its trophy patch every week since its re-release.

I played both versions back-to-back, leaving their final trophies so that I could earn them within minutes of one another. The list is exactly what I was hoping for, a generous sequence of level completion awards with a handful of random stuff which encourages heroics on Naboo and a little exploration on Tatooine. I might have dreamt up a couple more specific things, but I can't complain at what we got.

The game is pretty faithful to the movie's plot, adding a few extra sequences (specifically on Coruscant, where all the political intrigue is replaced by a kidnapping and rescue) and truncating a few others (anybody hoping to play the Battle at the Great Grass Plains, don't get your hopes up). It's primarily a third-person action platformer, and a somewhat clunky one at that, but several levels contain LucasArts' trademark adventure game DNA, with trading mechanics, optional side quests, and branching dialogue trees leading to multiple possible outcomes and methods of completion.

@Werehog First of all, thanks for the congrats!

  • You're welcome and sorry for the passing of who seems to be a true Hero to you, I didn't really know his work so I never felt like it was my place to say something but I know you like StarTrek as do many others so here is as good as place as any to say it. I imagine the show and movies were what made him so well known and so cherished by so many people. X-Men too but I think for most people he will always be his StarTrek character first.

  • I've never done it either, I'm not sure how it works but I've kind of gone off trophies. I used to focus on them to feel that 'well done', I tend to not get it from the games themselves but burning out for a platinum isn't safe/healthy so I stopped. I have offline Moderation in everything else, no one can do it for me in my games, it's all me and it always ends in exhaustion. This way that extra time spent goes into starting other games or other hobbies. I think also part of it might be 'what if someone sees my incomplete list', I have one PSN contact and don't look myself. Had I still had hundreds of contacts on there there I would feel that need to keep my progress proper. Now it's just about the games themselves, I still like reading about other peoples trophies/progress, it's an accomplishment regardless of how it's framed, and it can be fun too.

  • I definitely haven't played it or many StarWars games that I can remember. I did try the Super StarWars games from the Super Nintendo and The Empire Strikes back though my favorite movie was one of the hardest games I've ever played. I need to try Outlaws again at some point.

  • So here's a question. It's an old game and you played both versions back to back. Did you notice much difference between the two, when it comes to performance I mean. Or was it the identical game with faster frames, more responsive controls, or was it the exact same game built for two different systems.

• I've read a lot about the publicity and marketing behind the movie, it being the first new StarWars movie after the original trilogy (and their remasters) I like that era of tie-in movie games, from some of those very wooden Bond games to Disney. It's a part of Retro I enjoy but given the development time/costs I don't think we'll ever see timely tie-in games again. Either they rushed them or they had it down to an art-form. PS2 was the same and I suppose they dropped off around the time of PS3. Development costs must have climbed, you probably saw? E.A. are making a Battlefront 3, it's instead of a new Mass Effect. Have you managed to squeeze something Spooky in for Halloween or has your StarWars adventure commandeered all of your time? My most recent one is The Midnight Walk, it's impossible not to recommend it to people. It's very cinematic, the music is fantastic and unique, the puzzles are light, it's linear and sounds like an easy platinum too.

@GirlVersusGame I'll move some of this into the dedicated Star Wars topic but before I do, I'll say a big thank you for your commiserations and agree with you about your approach to trophy hunting. As soon as you start using terms like "unhealthy" and "unsafe" then you've gotta take that step back. My own has softened a little over the years. There have been several recent games where, in years gone by, I would have immediately chased its platinum, but instead have found myself concluding, "Well, I'm bound to replay it eventually anyway, so when I do, I can mop up the trophies if I want to." It has to be fun, and as you say, quite often it can be, but fun should never be forced. I still admire trophy hunters and I'm still proud of all the platinums I have popped (and continue to pop) but it's no longer the whole point of gaming for me. Indeed, it's only really thanks to this topic's existence that I continue to keep track!

I'll also answer this here, in case any trophy hunters are passing by and are interested in the new list for The Phantom Menace... no, there are absolutely no differences between the PS4 and PS5 versions of this PS Classic. Sony's emulator ensures that it looks the same, runs the same, and the trophy lists are identical, too. The only difference will be the controller in your hand, depending on your choice of hardware.

There is an original PC version of The Phantom Menace game out there, and it looks and runs a heck of a lot better than its PS1 port, but it's not currently available via modern storefronts (and obviously, being from 1999 an' all, comes without any trophies or trophy equivalents).

@Werehog I’d say I’m a casual trophy hunter these days, and have been since October last year. I used to be a hardcore trophy hunter, though, and had two accounts before the one I use now.

My first account ran from 2008 to 2012, but it was a bit of a giant omnishambles. I started fresh in 2016 and decided to go all in with my new account. At the time, my mum was seriously ill and spent the first five months of that year in and out of hospital. Trophy hunting became something I could throw myself into to take my mind off everything that was going on.

I kept that account until around 2021, I believe, but eventually it started taking a toll on me mentally. It was causing mental exhaustion and exacerbating my OCD (I also have ADHD), to the point where I wasn't really playing games for fun anymore. It had become more of an obligation than a hobby.

Eventually, I deleted the account and took a step back from trophy hunting altogether. I spent my time playing Switch games and enjoying whichever PS5 games I fancied, without worrying about trophies. I just played whatever I wanted, however I wanted.

Then, last October, I decided to give trophy hunting another go, but this time with a few self-imposed rules:

No New Game+,
No speedruns, if I can help it
If a game has a trophy for completing it on its highest difficulty, I'll play on that difficulty from the outset.
If completing the game unlocks an additional difficulty with its own trophy, I'll simply ignore it.

I'm quite enjoying this approach so far. It allows me to enjoy trophy hunting without letting it take over, and it's also given me more time to focus on other interests, such as reading and learning card magic. Ultimately, I still enjoy going after trophies, but I want gaming to remain fun rather than feel like a second job.
