@Th3solution Thanks for commenting bro. Funny you should mention moving generations. I had the GC then the Ps2 and finally the xbox - 2 generations ago. As I moved the libraries were so different and had various changes to the hardware and extras they felt like entirely new experiences. When the X360 and PS3 rolled up I wasn't ready.

It also coincided with military service so that played a big part too. My priorities shifted.

I'm unsure I can wait much longer for next gen to start though, partly as I haven't switched code. We have a switch and xbox here but I never use them!

@KidBoruto You always chip in now and then, so good to see you comment!

I'm starting to think it's Ps2 vs PS4 for the best console ever.

@Feena That's a great way to look at it. If I had to pick a console which was designed for me - it would have to be the.... Damn I don't know. Maybe, it is the PS4?

I hold a lot of love for the MD like you Fee, but I just can't play the games for any length of time anymore. Now that Streets of Rage 4 and Sonic Mania have arrived it has been surpassed in every way.

@ApostateMage Haha and it looks amazing.

The PS4 definitely started out on the sluggish side like the Xbox One but picked up momentum way quicker in my eyes. Bloodborne is probably my favorite Souls-like next to Nioh, and I will always have an admiration for the console because it had both my 2017 and 2018 GOTY picks on it (Hellblade/Persona 5 and Spider-Man)

Really hoping the PS5 comes out swinging and doesn't slouch in the software department. Apart from Miles Morales there isn't really a big title that appeals to me yet, but perhaps it'll be like the Switch launch where Zelda was so good by itself you didn't really need to have that stellar of a launch and Miles Morales will just carry the PS5 for a good while before the next major exclusive. For multiplats I'll be sticking with PC, but the PS4 exclusives are why it happily coexists with my Switch.

@nessisonett thanks for the reply. I will start with the low hanging fruit.

GTA San Andreas has been surpassed by GTA 4 then GTA 5, not to mention virtually every Ubisoft game they put effort in to.

Resi 4 has been surpassed by Most of Sonys output which follows a similar - action, cut scene, action, cut scene flow.

Metroid Prime was overrated imo at release as I bought it day 1. The control scheme was horrendous. Beaten by most first person shooters next gen and the whole losing your abilities and trying to refind them is a bit silly. I'm not a fan but then again I have questionable taste and the metroidvania mechanics seemed a bit daft at times.

Timesplitters 2 was flipping amazing. Making virus maps with my bro and then son years later was great. But it's all nostalgia, it's again beaten out by most fps and arguably already was beaten by the shooters on PC at the same time with mods.

Then we get onto hard mode.

Silent Hill 2 - Is it still scary?
Half Life 2 - I would rather play bioshock
MGS 2 and 3 - Okay yeah these are brilliant and timeless you win.

@themcnoisy I think that considering that these are almost 20 years old, the fact that this is still a point of contention works in the older games’ favour. To even compete with games from this gen, that’s impressive given how many games from back then have aged pretty badly. I honestly think PS3 has aged worse in terms of scope and polish, exemplified by my recent playthrough of Bioshock. Silent Hill 2 is both still scary af but the best game ever made imo. That level of mature storytelling just hasn’t been matched even in other modern classics.

@TheFrenchiestFry Ratchet & Clank, Demon Souls Remastered, Horizon FW will all come out within the first year too imo. Plus there is third party stuff like Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo which are timed. There is stuff which has not been announced yet, but I reckon those will a bit further out.

In regards to PS4, I find it difficult comparing to older generations as I think nostalgia clouds our perception a great deal. And I struggle to remember most of the games from when was a kid. I certainly did not play as many games as I do now as I couldn't afford most games when they first came out. This gen definitely has the most number of first party games I've enjoyed from what I can recall. I was late to last gen and was in 360, but do not think their 1st party games were as strong as Sony this gen. Gears of War i was sick off by the third game, Halo was fine but not great, Fable I had enough after the first game and Forza I think I played only number 3 for the whole generation. But games such as Batman AA, Bioshock, Demon Souls, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted Mass Effect etc were landmark titles which we are still feeling the effect off in todays landscape. But I think previous generations had plenty of those titles too. Damn this is difficult.

I think it's super easy to sit here and reminisce about the glory days of the original PlayStation but it's like how we look back with rose-tinted glasses at our school days. Yeah, it was amazing when we glued Mr. Pallister to the chair, but most of the time it was boring as. For every Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy VII there were barren weeks or months.

For me, PlayStation 4 has been the first console I've ever owned where there were legitimately too many good games to keep up with. My backlog is absolutely ludicrous. It's out of control. I should just give up on some of the games and admit I'm never going to play them. But I keep pretending I'm going to get around to them.

For me it's the best console I've ever had because of the sheer volume of quality games on it. It's pretty untouchable in that regard as far as I'm concerned.

@JohnnyShoulder I'll personally be getting Deathloop and GhostWire as well as Project Athia on PC. This gen my PC will remain my multiplat and Xbox games machine, even for games that are console exclusives.

I'd say this was probably the gaming gen that was most interesting for me to be a part of seeing as how I technically started getting into gaming during the 6th gen but not nearly as actively as at present. Sony's first party output would've been my favorite of the console manufacturers but Nintendo managed to pull such a massive 180 going from Wii U to Switch that I'd have to say they're tied in my opinion.

I'll definitely be picking up Demon's Souls, R&C and Horizon for sure in addition to Miles Morales. Other games I'm definitely looking out for are that Solar Ash game and Resident Evil Village, in addition to the increasingly obvious next mainline Persona entry, but I believe both of those are going to be on PC as well so there is that. Same with Yakuza

@kyleforrester87 That the Platinum one? That was the first game I played on PS4 alongside Journey and I really enjoyed it.

PS4 sucked. No advancement over PS3 for the most part and far too many remasters. We could have kept PS3 for another 7 years and not missed out on much

nessisonett

@stefan771 Somebody didn’t pay attention to that entire line of HD remasters on PS3. There’s always remasters, just don’t buy them. Judge the consoles on the good games. You wouldn’t say the SNES was crap cause it had Shaq Fu.

@stefan771 yet another person completely glossing over PSVR, Share tools and some of the amazing games this gen.

If Watch Dogs 2 came out on PS3 it would have been one of if not the best game on the console. It doesn't even register in the top 30 games this gen.

@themcnoisy Not to mention the many games that just wouldn’t have been possible on PS3. Remember the 4 minute load time for GTA V?

@johncalmc Everyone's backlogs are bursting, great generation!

@kyleforrester87 It was alright, I'm really struggling to recall anything about it. Initially I was won over by the graphics and voice work, it looked great to start. But the levels went on forever and became a slog. Repeated textures and models for backgrounds and an underwheling representation of the planet.

I will add I'm not a platinum fan, clearly a talented development team yet the games seem stuck in gameplay and gating from a few generations ago. Even Vanquish my favourite platinum game had regurgitated bosses and enemies, seemed to run out of puff after a couple of hours or so.

@JohnnyShoulder Your experience of x360 was similar to mine. I loved Halo Reach, Gears of War 2, Forza 3 and a load of the 3rd party games you mentioned. Then the lack of a longterm Microsoft plan outside of its core franchises and it focus on kinect really dampened the latter years.

@nessisonett I didn't play GTA V until the start of this gen so missed that fortunately.

Examples like tangible fabric, facial animations, 100 people in a game at once etc. There's loads of differences.

@themcnoisy Last-gen’s GTA V is the worst loading times I’ve ever experienced and I play PC. The point is that even when PS3 did have some great technical achievements, they came at a massive cost.

@themcnoisy It was only like 5-6 hours long so had no chance to outstay its welcome with me, of course I'd have still loved a longer campaign with more level variety.

Regardless I completed it 5 times back to back lol.

Gunna reinstall it I think!

I certainly try to, but at the same time trying to reduce my overall internet time usage...I still spend way too much time on the computer when I could be reading books/comics, gaming, or watching anime/cartoons/TV shows/movies etc.

PlayStation wise definitely in my opinion, but everyone not might think that for best console of all time.

Judging from the games library that suitable for me.
PS2 > PS4 > PS1 > PSP > PS3

PS2 for DDR, Drummania, Para Para Paradise, Bomberman games, K-1, Monster Farm 4, etc

PS4 for Dragon Quest Builders 2, Portal Knights and The Sims 4

PS1 for DDR again, Chocobo Racing, Quirky party games, etc.

I don't buy PS Vita for Completely Abysmal games library. Only 2 or 3 PS vita games i have a little interest. Not a worthy at all to buy PS Vita for just only 2 or 3 games.
