@FullbringIchigo Of course; they're always the tastiest.

@RogerRoger Just recently looked in to what BF2 can offer now; specifically the Arcade Starfighter stuff.
Since there'll probably never be anything close to a full Starfighter or Rogue Squadron game, this is looking like the best we'll get.
It was the best bit of the beta for me by far - just wandering if you could give me a run down of available ships? Or, more specifically - is the Episode 2 Jedi Starfighter in it yet? 😁

@KALofKRYPTON Alas, no. The only way to fly a Delta-7 Aethersprite on PS4 is to grab Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter as a PS2 Classic.

In fact, the hero ship support for the game is the only area which I'd call somewhat lacking, unfortunately. They've only added two to the roster since launch, both on the Light Side; one was a random background character from The Last Jedi who wasn't even named in the film, who flies one of the slightly-redesigned A-Wings, and the other is a third Millennium Falcon, the one from Solo (which at least looks different from the other two nearly-identical versions already available).

There are always rumours that this Clone Wars expansion would add Obi-Wan's Jedi Starfighter, but that'd be yet another Light Side addition. I'm hoping for General Grievous' starfighter, the Soulless One, or if they're really lazy (as the multiple Falcons suggest) a repaint of Slave One. Unfortunately, I don't think Dooku's Solar Sailor would work, but I'd love to see it regardless.

Don't get too excited by Starfighter Assault being in Arcade Mode now. Rather than give you freedom to explore all the maps, they box you in to a small section of them, presumably so that the enemy and wingman AI doesn't get too confused. For example, fight above the Droid Control Ship in orbit of Ryloth and you can't move outside the "doughnut hole" or fly inside the Core, and there are a couple Republic Star Destroyers positioned pretty close to crowd things out even more. It's also only really dogfighting, no "take down the shield generator" or "disable the turbolasers" or anything. The single player campaign offers some large, multi-objective starfighter missions, so they definitely could add them to Arcade if they wanted to. I guess it'd just take a little more programming which they didn't have time and / or money for.

Having said that, if the game really is £8 now and you just wanna blast starfighters out of the sky for an afternoon, it's out there and would tick your box. I'd also recommend checking out some of the multiplayer Starfighter Assault maps, as well as the new mode Hero Starfighter, in which everybody starts in a hero ship and when you're destroyed, you can respawn as any regular ship, from any era, to fly wingman support for the rest of the match (and it's also the only place outside of Theed where you can fly a Naboo N-1 Starfighter).

Okay, so after all that waffle, the available ships are as follows.

Prequel Era
Republic Fighter: ARC-170 Starfighter
Republic Interceptor: Alpha-3 Nimbus-Class V-Wing
Republic Bomber: BTL-B Y-Wing

CIS Fighter: Vulture-Class Droid Starfighter

Imperial Fighter: TIE/LN Fighter
Imperial Interceptor: TIE/IN Interceptor
Imperial Bomber: TIE/sa Bomber

Sequel Era
Resistance Fighter: Incom T-70 X-Wing
Resistance Interceptor: RZ-2 A-Wing

First Order Fighter: TIE/FO Fighter
First Order Interceptor: TIE/SF Interceptor

Hero Ships
Yoda, in an Actis-Class Light Interceptor
Darth Maul, in his "Scimitar" Sith Infiltrator

Lando Calrissian, in the Millennium Falcon (w. L3-37)

Luke Skywalker, in his "Red Five" Incom T-65 X-Wing (w. R2-D2)
Han Solo & Chewbacca, in the Millennium Falcon

@RogerRoger Thanks for the information... Hmmm...

I do have Starfighter, and Jedi Starfighter, and Rogue Squadron/Leader and Rebel Strike... It's shame BF2 is still so limited. Ah well.

@KALofKRYPTON It is a shame. Obviously, if the Delta-7 Aethersprite randomly shows up tomorrow, or at any point in the future, I'll make a heck of a lot of noises that sound like "SQUEEEEE!!" around here and I'll be sure to tag you when I do.

I'd also like another prequel-era Starfighter Assault map for multiplayer. The two they've already got (Ryloth and Kamino) are some of the best.

@RogerRoger .

It does look lovely - I just have no interest in how the gun play felt on foot.

If I see it ridiculously cheap, I might bite.

So, today brings Geonosis and Obi-Wan Kenobi to the game and... well, not much else. There's a third new skin for General Grievous, which is super-expensive and shows how badly they're prepared to scrape the bottom of the barrel, as it's basically "Even More Battle-Damaged Grievous" as opposed to the pre-existing "Appropriately Battle-Damaged Grievous" skin (which is half the price, obviously).

There are no new smaller Geonosis maps for the other game modes, or Arcade, and no new Starfighter Assault maps in the planet's rings (which would've been awesome, but hey).

What it does seem to be doing is pushing everybody into the Geonosis map for Galactic Assault, at least in the immediate; I went in expecting to have to go through the cycle a couple times and ended up playing four consecutive rounds of it, so either I was extremely lucky or it's what everybody's playing today. The map itself is large and spectacular, but deeply flawed. The first stage takes place in a pretty generic rocky part of the planet; you don't go inside to the Control Room or see too many Geonosian hibernation alcoves, beyond a small handful of tunnels. The "story" goes that the Republic were trying to secure a Droid Factory but the Separatists have launched a massive counter-attack, and the clones are now attempting to push them back and keep the secrets they've earned; to begin with, you have to scramble over to two inoperable AT-TEs and fix them.

Twice, the Separatists won this round and that was it, game over. They're extremely hard to defend, with the landscape doing very little to favour anything other than a numbers game of "run towards the objective and shoot more than you get shot".

If you manage to get the AT-TEs operational, however, then they begin to lumber down a hill towards the large, open expanse of the battlefield. This is where things get chaotic. You're trying to take down those tall, cylindrical CIS vessels before they launch and, with artillery and knowledge that the weak point is indeed "right above the fuel cells" (thank you, nerdy Star Wars quote recollection), they're pretty easy to destroy. Since you're opening up into a wide area, there's a pretty good funnel of gameplay here, but the signs of the chaos to come start to creep in.

I can't tell you what the objective in the third stage is, because despite playing it twice, I've no idea. There were big "DEFEND" markers above the AT-TEs but I don't really know why. All I know is that the sweeping, flat, open landscape for that final section of the match is just nightmarish chaotic nonsense. Dust is kicked up and turns everything into a blurry yellow mess, and everybody's just a tiny dot on a giant killing floor. Multiple times I just wandered into groups of the enemy and was genuinely surprised to see them. There's no strategy, no tactics, nothing... just "run forward and try not to die too much" in between those lucky enough to spawn and / or control tanks and speeders. I didn't get to use a STAP, but I did use a BARC Speeder a couple times and they're just uncontrollable, skittish things that instantly make you an easy target.

After playing it twice through to completion (for whatever it was worth) I quit out. For all the hype and talk, it's just another Galactic Assault map, and not even a great one.

Obi-Wan, meanwhile, is very cool. He's got some great abilities (a lightsaber rush which deflects laser fire and hits anybody he passes, a charged variant of the Force Push and a Mind Trick which prevents anybody from blocking your attacks) and all of his emotes and victory poses are exactly what you'd wished for. I played some Heroes Vs. Villains to get him up to Level 5 and unlocked two emotes for him, "Hello there!" and "Your move!" As and when the mood takes me, I'll work on improving him rather than going back to Geonosis.

There's no Delta-7 Aethersprite, no Soulless One... nothing else. Kinda an underwhelming update, having seen everything within about ten minutes. I'd love for them to separate out chunks of the Geonosis map and make them available in Arcade, or maybe add an internal Control Room environment for the smaller multiplayer modes; with any luck, they'll come with Anakin and Dooku.

We shall see.

Tagging @FullbringIchigo and @KALofKRYPTON as promised.

@RogerRoger Thanks for your thoughts. I I watched a little bit of gameplay. Looks nice enough, but still not particularly interested.

Time for a Rogue Leader remaster petition! 😂

@RogerRoger I didnt think it would. Thanks for confirming! That is one of my fave Star Wars scenes, something I grew up wishing to see with all those jedis fighting it out.

@KALofKRYPTON I'd sign it!

@FullbringIchigo To be honest, with what's here, you're probably better off waiting until Dooku and Anakin have been added, as they're likely to be accompanied by smaller tweaks and better integration across all gameplay modes. The only downside is, by then, Geonosis in Galactic Assault will likely have fallen into the regular rotation and it'll be patience and / or luck tracking it down. It's a lot to re-install for an afternoon or two!

@JohnnyShoulder Yep, same... and what's worse? Because of the hero system, there are no Jedi fighting in the background. I was hoping for the Battle of Geonosis, a.k.a. the specific battle from Episode II - Attack of the Clones, but nope, it's just a random skirmish. Oh well.

The battle for Geonosis is an excellent edition to galactic battle rotation. My only gripe is that I would have part one of the battle not end if the clone troopers lose, just give them less tanks to use for parts 2 and 3. Playing as the separatists I dont try as hard in part one because I like playing in the more open battle of parts 2 and 3 All in all, well done in the latest update.

@Elodin Some excellent BBC-style balance, thank you!

Although we do definitely agree that the first phase of Geonosis is the weakest, in terms of level design (it just feels like the outdoors parts of Takodana, only without the trees). Even though I didn't really get along with the second and third phases, they're at least pretty unique to the map.

Sorry for forgetting to tag you with my random thoughts yesterday, by the way. Glad you actually like the new map and hope you continue to enjoy!

Some massive cheating going on. In Galactic war Im finding 2 to 3 people with scores in the 250 to 350k range and 0 to 2 kills. To put that in perspective, good players normally get 18 to 30k scores

@Elodin I don't understand how people could cheat on PS4, though?

EDIT: Sorry, I should clarify, I absolutely don't think that there isn't something fishy going on with scores like those, and wasn't trying to cast doubt on your reporting of suspicious activity. I'm talking in terms of my technical ignorance and not being able to understand how somebody would go about achieving those scores on console in the first place. Apologies for any confusion.
