@Tasuki The original Spyro had two camera options in the pause menu, and whatever it was on by default was horrible; if it's anything like the original, changing it to the second option fixes the camera to Spyro's direction a lot more, so that it turns with him and points where his nose points. I found that much more accessible when I played whatever demo I played, eons ago.

Funny how that's literally the only thing I remember. Sorry I can't be more specific!

So...interesting glitch happened in two parts.

Bombo disappeared part way through the quest...

And then I found him:

So um....yeah. That....broke the game.

EDIT: Fixed him...by flinging him cross the stage.

Started playing Spyro 3 and err....

Well let's say it's obvious this one was outsourced to Sanzaru (Alongside the sheer catalogue of other studios credited).

Sheila feels...weird with momentum, Sparx sometimes DOESN'T pick up gems, the lip-syncing and overall production values feel lower....and boy, I already ran into to some er...some bugs let's say. Plus, the physics on the skateboard are so weird. You slow down while jumping, and can't really pick up speed again, but some jumps off of ramps are scripted. Like...the game wants there to be momentum physics it feels like....but then scripts stuff...

I mean...I was really enjoying this. Spyro 3 was always my least favourite, though still enjoyable title that is bogged down by so much fluff.

But this...wow.

Also, a character in Cloud Spires didn't talk to me until I had passed them, and for some reason after a dialogue box in this game, Spyro just kinda...gets stuck in one direction regardless of where you move, just briefly.

Development obviously wasn't smooth if there was so much outsourcing and the end result was this...after a delay.

I finally got started on this and it's amazing how short these games are now! I've just 100% completed the artisan world in the first game and it's taken less than two hours. The annoyance of hunting for the last gems is still there though..

Weirdly, I started playing the game once it was able to as it installed (digital version) and I can't use the balloon as it hasn't fully installed. I assumed it would have downloaded the whole of the first game before being able to play. I guess that's me done for the night then.

It's also rather generous with the trophies. I've already got four without trying. 10% platinum achievement level is pretty high too.

@Thrillho your dragon fly can lead you to the gems in Spyro 1 now, too, which makes it a lot quicker. But I agree, it's so much easier than I remember.

@Thrillho There's a definite increase in challenge when you get to Spyro 2. I'd agree that the first game is relatively straightforward; I platinumed it across a couple days and only found one or two of the trophies to require a handful of restarts and / or some kind of strategy. Otherwise, it was a very fun, relaxing breeze. Hopefully you can get on that balloon soon!

I'm back to Spyro 2 after I dropped it before Christmas because I was getting frustrated with the amount of new nonsense it throws at you (certainly a case study for sequel-itis, the known affliction of developers cramming too much in to a follow-up and ruining what made the original work) and this morning struggled with a boss fight before simply giving up on a secondary objective in the following level, after about a dozen attempts. When the game said I was 46% complete, I had 19% trophies, so they're also much more hidden and / or specific than before (where my trophy count pretty much kept pace with the in-game completion tracker).

I'm now not sure whether I'll even bother trying to platinum Spyro 2 because I'm simply not engaging with it, let alone falling in love with it like I did the first game.

I'm done with the trilogy for now. Never bothered to get the platinum for Spyro 2 because I really just didn't like it at all; from the very beginning it just started throwing a bunch of new stuff at the wall, and only half of it actually stuck. First impressions are key and it made all negative ones. Left it at 60% trophies and then didn't start Spyro 3 for a good couple weeks.

Thankfully, the third game felt much more balanced. It retains almost all of the gameplay, er... let's say "improvements" (sarcasm alert!) but spreads them out evenly across the runtime, so that when you do encounter one you're still not reeling from the last. Also, giving you actual new characters with unique abilities was very welcome, rather than just dumping random one-shot moves onto Spyro himself, and made it flow much better. I could keep my momentum going and enjoyed two, sometimes three hour sessions, rather than doing a couple levels and then quitting before I ended up hating it.

Despite this, once I'd beaten the final boss and completed about 80% of the game (with 88% trophies) I still felt like sticking around to complete everything would make the game outstay its welcome, so I've called it finished and deleted it from my HDD. At some point down the line, I'll come back and maybe polish off Spyro 3 (perhaps when I need a relatively-easy platinum to even out my profile's tally) but I won't touch Spyro 2 again.

The first game was near-perfect, the second terrible and the third was really solid, so that's a win on balance, I'd say. The quality was consistent throughout the Reignited Trilogy (at least to me) and the developers should be proud of the work they've done.

But I'm gonna be wary of too many more of these nostalgia projects, I think, because almost exactly the same thing happened to me when I played Crash.

@Knuckles-Fajita @RogerRoger Got the plat for the first game yesterday and it was really interesting to read your impressions on the trilogy.

The first one is the only original game of the trilogy that I played as a kid and completing it on PS4 was a very fulfilling gaming experience. I’m afraid that when I play 2 and 3 now the little dragon in me will become burnt-out soon. I am curious about them, sure, but I want to give them a fair shot at pulling me in in their own way and constantly comparing them to the first game would be detrimental to the experience.

So I’m going to give it some time, enjoy my nostalgic afterbuzz and try Ripto’s Rage in a few months.

@JJ-firl I reckon you're being very wise. Spacing the games out a little more is something I kinda wish I'd done now, in hindsight. It was the direct comparison between the simple, charming and adorable first game and then the suddenly-complex, much-more-challenging, rapid-fire randomness of the second game which did the most damage. These are excellent experiences when you put them between other (ideally not cartoony platformer) games and that's why I took a short break between 2 and 3, and therefore probably why I liked 3 more when I got underway.

Glad you enjoyed earning your shiny new platinum, and hope you have a better time with the sequels when you get around to playing them!

@JJ-firl I’m also having a break between games, as I did with the Crash trio otherwise it might be a bit much.

I remember playing Year of the Dragon but had a pirate copy which had some quite amusing anti-piracy code which ranged from the fairies telling you off for playing, through to the game literally wrecking itself at the end so you lost all of your eggs and couldn’t finish the game!

Spyro 2 done in just over 9hrs with the platinum.

This is the only one of the trilogy I didn't play originally. I still enjoyed it overall but it felt weird to not be saving dragons. The difficulty is certainly a step up from Spyro 1 as @RogerRoger said, particularly the bosses (and especially to get the trophy for the second main boss!).

On the whole, the challenges to get the additional orbs were quite sound and clever ways of using the base controls in different ways. I liked the ice hockey one in particular. Some were a bit of a faff though and dragged things out a bit.

I also found the hover function when gliding to be a bit hit and miss. It seemed like if you used it to near to the edge of the area you were aiming for, then it just cancelled your flight rather than give you the slight boost in height you were after. Particularly frustrating if it meant you then had to backtrack to try again, or landed in lava etc instead. The inability to not have inverted Y axis controls when swimming was also a little baffling.

Thrillho

RogerRoger

@Thrillho Glad it wasn't just me who periodically cancelled his hover right before landing and ended up in lava! From what I can tell, there's a certain amount of glide time you've got to achieve before it'll let you hover. If I slowed my inputs by a fraction of a second, it worked.

And thanks for the tag, because I'm also glad it wasn't just me who found the sequel more difficult (and the underwater controls certainly didn't help, either).

Will you take a break before playing Spyro 3, then?

@RogerRoger Yeah, I've got Spider-Man to come next. Like I said above, I played the Crash trilogy with a different game between each of those and am doing the same here (Jurassic Park was the gap between 1&2 here).

With the second game, it also had a pet peeve of mine in having certain sections blocked off until you had an ability acquired later on. It makes sense in some games (like Guacamelee) but here it just meant you had to drag yourself back through a level to break one chest or get one orb.

Thrillho

RogerRoger

@Thrillho Yep. Same. There's a little bit of that in Spyro 3, but it's far, far less frequent and obvious, and the sections blocked off are extensive and worth the return trip (none of this "come back here when you can climb ladders and fetch the trinket at the top" nonsense; I get enough of that from the LEGO games I play every couple years, ta).

Hope you enjoy Spider-Man, and looking forward to your thoughts on Spyro 3 someday!

@KratosMD By the time you get through all those games you've just bought, they will have probably reprinted for PS5!

@KratosMD That's true, I remember how disappointed you were when it materialised that only the first game was on the disc.
