I've never played an Assassin's Creed game before (I never had a ps3/xbox 360) and Black Flag seems interesting enough I'm aware of the previous story lines so I'm not worried about if I need to play the others or not. I was just wondering if I should get it. Some say it's great while others say it isn't all some make it up to be. What do you guys think? Just tell me why you think yea or nay for a purchase as well. Thanks in advanced everyone!
This might be a bit of a meaty answer, but here goes.
If you start at IV, you won't have a clue about the modern day story. Fortunately you're only forced to jump into it about four times over the course of the game. That said, it probably doesn't make much sense anyway, and it's definitely possible to enjoy the game without knowing anything about the plot.
However, there are bits and pieces in the actual historical storyline that won't make much sense if you haven't played previous games, either. But again, it's perfectly possible to enjoy it for what it is.
IV is easily the biggest and most open title in the series, so if you're into exploration and doing a ridiculous amount of side/optional stuff, then you'll probably love this. In my personal opinion, I think IV is the franchise's best game. Many problems from past titles bleed into this one, but if you haven't played them then you obviously won't notice or mind that much.
Its only *real* problem is its mission design. A lot of the story missions are awkwardly made, whether it's a stealth section that's incredibly fiddly, or one of the many tedious and boring missions where you have to follow someone without being spotted. Thankfully, even these flaws tend to get lost in the enjoyment of sailing the seas, plundering ships, and slicing up entire platoons of soldiers.
So yeah, I think it's really as good a place as any to start. If you care about the (in my opinion, crap) modern day story, then you might want to begin with the PS3 games. Hope this helped!
EDIT: Just realised that you said you don't have a PS3. May as well start with this then I reckon!
Yeah that pretty much addresses the points I was thinking in my head. A while back I was curious about the story so I read up on the synopsis of the series up through ACIII, so I fairly up to speed on the modern story and whatnot. And from the looks of the modern stories (I looked up so walkthroughs of the early game while contemplating a purchase) they don't seem fun at all. I'm not too concerned with the modern story at all to be honest. I like the open exploration stuff, almost like an RPG, so I think my decision is swaying to getting it. Thank's for your input guys, I really appreciate it!
PS: Provided I enjoy Black Flag, would Freedom Cry constitute it's USD $15 (or whatever currency you guys might be using) price tag? It seems interesting enough yet it also, from what I've gathered, seems a bit short.
I actually thought the modern story in brotherhood and 3 were good (except for 3's ending). 2's wasn't bad either. They just took it in weird directions.
I actually placed an order from amazon for it on Wednesday, so I'm expecting it anytime between next Monday and next Thursday, and I'm pretty pumped for it!
