@Tasuki Exactly. People harp on about backwards compatibility like it's this super important factor in owning a console, and I suppose it is for some people. But in reality only a small percentage people use it on Xbox, that will be something that Sony will look at along with how feasible and cost effective it is to do it.
Like I hear some people say that Sony will have VR 2.0 built into the next console. Really? And make the
same mistake Microsoft did with Kinect and XBO.

@Tasuki I understand technology needs to go forward and that is exactly my criticism on not having backwards compatibility. If a PS3 is able to play a certain game, that the PS4 isn't, than that's not technology going forward. That's just a machine playing different games.

A PS5 that can play PS4 games is just a better piece of hardware than a PS5 that can't.

@Tasuki Yes I buy new consoles to play new games but I also buy new consoles to relieve old games when I want to...new can get ahead so far and I for one would like to revisit Resistance and plus having BC on certain games could have prolonged the lifespan of a lot of games that use MP you know like Demon Souls for example or Resistance or Killzone etc etc.
BC is not a deciding factor for anyone but It is a very important feature for me that makes me feel that Previous gens will not be forgotten absolutely once the production stops on the consoles that played those games.

@Hapuc But is it cost effective for a company to keep old servers open. I mean 15 years from now will people be playing CoD:WWII, for example in masses like they do now, I don't think so. It's not cost effective to keep an old MP server up just for people who have the occasional itch to go back and play a multiplayer game.

@Kidfried Adding more stuff to a console (or any piece of hardware) doesn't always mean it's gonna be better.

@Tasuki Well People still play Modern Warfare 1 from 2007 we don't know that.
And It's not dedicated servers it's p2p like Sony does with their servers.

@Hapuc - resistance used dedicated servers. killzone also uses dedicated servers as the game controllers, hubs for syncing all the clients (forwards network traffic between all players in the game), and running a certain portion of the game logic (missions/scoring). almost all of the logic relating to your movement, shooting, etc. run locally on the PS3. most games that use p2p, still have some kind of master server somewhere, even though they are not running the all of the game logic, so shut that off, the game no longer functions. as far as i know, in killzone's case, it's not the cost of keeping the KZ2/3 servers running that's the problem, it's more that the hardware/software are so old, they pose increasing security risks as third parties aren't patching that stuff anymore.

@leucocyte Well it's even better because they are dedicated servers on some of those games.
It makes even more sense to have BC now.

@Hapuc Less sense actually. A number of games are seeing their servers turned off and so only part of the games actually work now - even on a PS3. If anything it makes more sense to 'remaster' these in a similar way to Halo Master Chief collection with the full MP or failing that, like the Nathan Drake collection with the MP removed. You could have the Resistance trilogy on one Disc - remastered - either with or without the MP - even a 'best of' MP with a selection of the best maps (if not all). They could do the same with Killzone 2/3 - and both of these could also include the 'Vita' games remastered as well. It could be a 'cool' unlockable after completing the games to unlock the Vita game...

The fact that Sony are turning off the online servers - maybe to repurpose them for other, more populated games is more indicative that BC is unlikely. The MP BC games on Xbox are still active on both systems. They also don't split the gamers up by generation either as those still gaming on 360 are in the same lobbies as those on XB1 and even Party Chat works across both generations too.

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

@BAMozzy Well yeah keep the same servers on both systems.
And yeah because servers are getting shut down because of low player Count on good games it's a shame...if we had BC to work on Ps4/Ps5 that would prolong the servers I don't get why do you guys on here care about server cost and stuff like that.
I care losing good MP games freaking diablo 2 after 18 years is still going strong while Killzone 2-3 servers got shut down.

@BAMozzy Or they could do what they did with Cod Modern Warfare Remastered, and sell the dlc map packs again at higher price then they were originally on sale for lol.

@JohnnyShoulder Of course but that would still require a remastered version rather than BC - which was the point of this.

On a side note, there are 'rumours' that the PS5 Dev Kits have already been distributed to 'some' 3rd party developers. If that is the case, even Nov 2019 seems an exceptionally long time away. Most Devs didn't get PS4/XB1 dev kits 6-8 months before these released. It really doesn't make sense to release Dev Kits a year or more before releasing as a LOT can change. I doubt that Sony would 'drastically' change the way a console is constructed - the way the CPU, GPU and RAM are linked - BUT the CPU and its frequency, GPU cores and any custom modifications (like the Pro has with FP16 capability, Object tracking for improved chequerboard rendering and other 'Vega' features added) and even the RAM (how much is allocated for gaming, speed and type) etc can all impact the 'development' of games and how they run. Minor tweaks, like a slight boost to CPU clock speed for example are not unusual - even after release with both Sony and MS freeing up more resources for Devs in the first 6months - MS was more publicised because the resources were freed up by dropping/limiting Kinect but Sony also unlocked the 7th CPU core for Devs.

I personally wouldn't be surprised as the PS3 was discontinued over a year ago (Oct 2016 in NA - although did hang on a bit longer in Japan) and Sony have, in the past, brought out a next Gen within a year of discontinuing the oldest gen. A year after the PS1 was discontinued, we got the PS3, a year after the PS2 was discontinued, we got the PS4 - Sony has a record for making 2 generations of console. I would LOVE Sony to release a PS5 sooner because I want to play games like Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima etc at 4k - preferably 60fps too. I do think Nov 2019 is 'more' likely as Sony's console have tended to be on the market for 6yrs before replacing but with the PS4 being relatively 'weak' for a HD console (I Know its the strongest but considering its a 'full' HD console and how far away a lot of games are from the 'full HD' PC quality and the fact that games often have to run at 30fps or drop down to 900p to get 60fps - granted the XB1 is in a worse state), I can see Sony dropping the PS4 and just making the PS4 Pro - especially now it offers super-sampling and bringing the PS5 to market - with BC too.

Point is, if this is true, this is more indication that Sony will be looking to the 'next' generation. As stated above, Sony don't drop support for the current gen as soon as the next gen launches. If Sony are bringing BC to their consoles, its much more likely to be with the PS5 now than with a console that is coming up to its 5th birthday and with newer hardware due in the 'near' future - a future that 'could' be sooner than some think...
