Topic: Controller connection advice?

I've got a PS3 super slim on 4.89 that will turn on by pressing the ps button but then the controller flashes all 4 red lights and doesn't connect unless I plug it in OR I can hold down the path button for 10 seconds until it turns off then when I press it again it will immediately sync. The second controller will connect but if it's already on but whichever one I used to turn it on does this. If I use the systems power button to turn it on then press the controllers ps button it also connects right away. Why it doing this? I have a slim that connects right after turning on with the same controllers and I've tried resetting them and restore PS3 system full format. I mean it only another ten seconds but not intuitive and would like to fix this if possible. Any ideas?
