Topic: Very weird problem with my PS4

Hello,

New to this forum. I set up my playstation 4 a couple of days ago and I've run into a massive problem with it.

It will not play any sound from anything online at all. It plays the background music on the home menu, and it'll play the sound for any disk games that I play. It'll play the sound for DVDs that I put in. But anything related to the internet or online, and there's no sound.

I downloaded a game off the playstation store. It played fine, but there was no sound, even with the volume turned all the way up. So I re-installed the game. Still no sound. So I downloaded another game. No sound in that one, either. Then I noticed that there was no sound whenever I used the playstation store. Then I tried using the internet browser. No sound in the internet browser, either.

I contacted Sony for help, and they told me to put it into safe mode and re-install the system software. I did that, but the problem was still there afterward. I'm honestly at a loss for what to do now.

@buttonpusher could be a problem with the HDMI cable, try replacing it and see if that helps

Sounds weird. Is there another TV you can try it with out of interest? Either way set it to factory settings as well and try it. Is there another HDMI cable or socket you can try?

@FullbringIchigo I can try that, but unfortunately, I can't run out to get an HDMI cable right now (massive snowstorm outside).

@kyleforrester87 There isn't another TV I can try it with. I tried resetting it to factory settings; no luck. I tried another HDMI socket; the problem was still there. Thanks for the help.

@buttonpusher Would definitely be worth trying another HDMI cable when you can. If you've any friends with PS4s online it could be interesting/fun to try Shareplay and give them control of your PS4 to see if they can hear it through their own TV. Since your PS4 is doing all the work, if they can hear it you'd think it would narrow down the problem to your TV or the cable, and rule out the PS4.

@buttonpusher do have a blu-ray player or another console like a PS3, XBOX ONE or Wii U you could borrow one from just to check?

@FullbringIchigo I didn't think of that, whoops. Just tested with an HDMI cable from the PS3, but that didn't work either.

@kyleforrester87, just tried another HDMI cable. No luck.

I think, at this point, I'm just going to buy another PS4 to see if the problem is with the TV or the playstation.

@buttonpusher Could be worth it! What TV you got out of interest?

Edit: Might not make much difference but can you put headphones in the controller and see if it works through them? You need to hold the PS button down on the controller and go into the settings to turn all audio through headphones on.

Also, if your TV has a headphone jack try straight into the TV with those?

@kyleforrester87 @buttonpusher that could work, i would also suggest checking your sound settings in the PS4 settings menu

Hmm interesting. It sounds like it isn't the HDMI or the TV I would guess since you have a PS3 which I assume is also online. Games can be played from disc ok but nothing downloaded which is the odd part. That makes it more likely a software issue possibly.

OK, well here is what Sony will first suggest so I would suggest trying these first.

1) Restore to factory default (Already done).
2) Check the patch version is up to date (probably is, they will ask you to check).
3) Check audio and network settings. Not sure what to look for here specifically but just a check that there is nothing obvious off.
4) Are you connected via wifi or LAN? Can you try LAN if wifi or vice versa

Probably clutching at straws but at least you can answer SOny on these points when they get back to you!

Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot

I seem to remember I had trouble getting sound to play from blu-rays on the PS4, I spent a little while fiddling with the sound settings before I got it to work, but not sure if your problems could be fixed in the same manner. It is at least worth having a go at messing with the settings to see if it does anything.

@kyleforrester87 the TV is a Panasonic TH-42PX600U, but I don't think the TV is a problem, because the PS4 HDMI cable plugs into the receiver box, which is an Onkyo TX-NR646. I'll try out the headphones shortly and see what happens.

Update: I tried out the headphones by plugging them into the controller like you said. And the sound worked through them.

@FullbringIchigo I'll try fiddling with the sound settings; I'm not sure what exactly I would be looking for with that, but it's worth a try. Anything specific I should try changing?

@Rudy_Manchego, a clarification: I actually don't use online on my PS3. I only use it for disk games, so the problem could be there and I wouldn't know about it.
I'll double-check the sound settings again, but after resetting and reinstalling the software, I don't think anything would be amiss.
I wouldn't be able to try using a LAN cable because my TV is bolted into the wall on the ground floor of my house, and the only LAN port in my house is in the router on the top floor. I don't know how I would find a wire long enough to connect them.

At this point, I'm starting to think that this is just an unfixable gremlin. I'll keep trying, though.

@buttonpusher don't think it'll be unfixable but it is odd. I've read that some people have problems like this that were cured by the order that they turn their hardware on :s bizarre!

@kyleforrester87 I just plugged the headphones into the controller and the sound came through them. But the sound is only coming through the headphones. This only deepens the mystery lol.

@kyleforrester87 I don't think I can do that because my TV is attached to the wall, and getting to the HDMI port in the back of it would require taking it off the wall. I have no confidence in my ability to do that without breaking at least 4 things.

Can you think of anything in the sound settings that would be causing this to happen? Now that I've established that there's a way to make sound play online on this thing, there's got to be a way to make it play the sound all the time.

I am not saying it is your issue, but Onkyo receivers are notorious for HDMI issues.

Not my words but I really think you need to try it straight into the PS4, sure you can't do it? Isn't it a HDMI cable coming from the Tv to reciever? If so just pull it out the reciever and put it into the PS4. Might be an optical cable though or something. Either way you need to rule out the reciever I think.

@kyleforrester87 Oh. My. God. You solved it. I didn't even think to look for the HDMI cable coming from the TV to the receiver (it runs through the wall so it's mostly hidden so that's why I forgot about it) but I found it, and I plugged the Playstation directly into the TV, and bingo- problem solved! There's no sound missing now form any of the online features! And since I had to bypass the receiver to solve the problem, that means the problem was with the Onkyo receiver, not the Playstation.

kyleforrester87

@buttonpusher Good stuff! it's not really the best solution if you use the reciever for other stuff so hopefully you can find the appropriate settings for your ps4 to work properly with it. Maybe there are some adjustments you can make on the reciever too but I think Google will be your friend there!

@kyleforrester87 I'm just glad that the issue is with the receiver and not the PS4. I can plug the receiver back in whenever I need to use it for cable or for my PS3 or my Wii, so I'm not too worried. Thank you so much for your help! Now I can enjoy my playstation fully!

@FullbringIchico @Rudy_Manchego @Dichotomy Thanks to all of you for the help, too. The problem's been resolved. Comments above explain how.
