Topic: Sony doesn’t allow PSN region changes. EVER

I’ve recently moved from the UK to USA and have promptly found out that I’m unable to switch psn regions. Ever. Which is beyond ridiculous from Sony.

Because I now work in the USA, I no longer have funds in my uk account. PSN does not allow me to use my US bank cards on UK psn and when I’m in the USA I can’t find any websites that allow me to buy UK PSNvouchers with a US card.

PayPal doesn’t work on my psn either so no luck there…

I don’t want to switch accounts as I have a rather large trophy collection that dates all the way back to 2008. (79 platinums!!!)

Anyone here ever moved countries and experienced similar issues? Would love to know some kind of work around.

At the moment I either have to buy games on a separate USA psn account (not the end of the world but no Ps plus discounts etc) or just buy physically.

I have thought about getting ps plus on a USA account but then I would lose access to all my Ps plus back catalogue on my UK account (I’ve had Ps plus since 2011!!!).

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd contact customer service and tell them about your situation. Also, have you changed your address in your PSN profile? That might prevent you from switching regions as well. I have no idea but this is what comes to mind.

Thanks for the reply 🙏 yeah I’ve exhausted all options with customer service. They’ve basically just said my only option is to create a new psn account

@ArmoredMore I think the UK site Shopto.net accept PayPal and they normally have pretty good deals on PSN credit to boot!

As an aside, if you really had to tie any new purchases to a new US PSN, isn't it possible to have both accounts logged in on the PS4 and play the US games with your UK account? Or is that not a thing on PlayStation

@ralphdibny thanks for your reply 🙏 Unfortunately shopto doesn’t allow me to buy UK psn cards. Only USA ones. Even if I then use a vpn for it to show me UK cards it then won’t let me buy them with a USA debit or credit card

Using games on a secondary USA account is what I’m doing now. It works. But not ideal because I can’t take advantage of ps plus discounts (this is usually when I buy all of my games, with a Ps Plus discount).

Real shame that PSN doesn’t allow region changes. Literally EVERYTHING ELSE I have allows me to (xbox, iPhone in particular was super easy to do this)

@ArmoredMore Have you tried to buy UK PSN cards from cdkeys with a USA credit card? I vaguely remember someone buying French cards with a German card or something...

@ralphdibny If I remember correctly in both PS4 and PS5 you have to choose what account you log in with when the system starts.

play-asia.com also sells psn cards from different regions.

@ArmoredMore but Shopto allows you to use PayPal doesnt it?

@belmont ahh fair enough I'll have to check later but I thought you could play games owned by anyone else on the system, like my main account with all my ps purchases is on there and if I signed in with my partners PSN when I turn it on, I'd still be able to access purchased games from my main account, I'll check tomorrow to confirm. Not sure if that counts for PS plus subs or claimed games and can't test that as I don't have ps plus

@ralphdibny You can access games from main account but Plus works only for the account you actually paid for.

Some websites, even if you pay by PayPal do not allow you to pay if the region of the card that you have in PayPal doesn't match with the region of what you want to buy! I guess you could use PayPal credit but I have never tried it. They might do it to prevent from accidental purchases.

OK after @ralphdibny posted about PayPal and shopto I remembered this: many years ago when Nintendo opened the original Wii eshop my region was not included and I opened an account in UK. After a couple of months Nintendo opened the eshop in my region but you couldn't change regions and for some time I used PayPal to buy UK cards from shopto and payed via PayPal but with a European credit card. @ArmoredMore You should check it. You would still pay currency exchange tax though.
