Hi guys,

Im after a bit of advice. I bought a second hand PS4 Pro the other week and it was loud as hell. I thought it was going to take off, Ive never heard a fan go like that. The box is a Fifa 2018 box so Im assuming its a 2018 model.

Anyway, after a bit of research I decided to take the thing apart for a good clean. I disassembled the thing totally and the exhaust system was well blocked up. I cleaned everything, its now like new inside.

Whilst it was open I decided to change the thermal paste and all the pads. I then left it as was busy with the kids.

Anyway, last night I released I hadn't updated the VRam thermal pads so reopened it back up this morning and changed those out as well. So all thermal paste and pads is changed (the VRam a week or so after the paste and other pads).

Today I turned the system on and it ran lots better but not quiet quiet but definitely not the flying machine it was before. Using my phone I measured the sound level using a db app (tested in front of the PS where discs are loaded in). Running God of War it ramped up to 60db. It kept ramping up and down at different points in the game but the peek was 60db. Is this excessive for a Pro on GoW, running with boost and 4k with HDR?

The PS is attached vertically onto the wall behind the tv. The fan does ramp up and down now not just flat out but on intensive games, with boost mode enabled, it isn't quiet.

I have tested also on Last of US part 2, that reached about 54/55db so not quite as loud.

Whilst it was apart I noted that the fan Nidec type so left this in and just cleaned.

Whats your thoughts? Is this excessive noise or is it normal noise level for a PS4 Pro?

Should I re-paste processor thermal paste?

Cheers

I don’t have any advice about the PS4 Pro, but I’m currently playing God of War on a base PS4 via a disc and I’m surprised that it’s not louder. I had heard about the game making people’s fans kick into overdrive, but I haven’t felt it’s more egregious than any other game. After a 3 hour gaming session yesterday I felt the back of the console and it was surprisingly not even very hot.

I have noticed that the fan kicks in and gets louder off and on, like you describe - strangely it seems to get louder while in the menus, which doesn’t make sense to me. As soon as I exit the menu it usually quiets back down.

Anyways, this is probably useless info because I do think the PS4 Pro has more issues with fan noise and cooling. But the vanilla PS4 actually isn’t too bad playing GoW, and mine is a launch unit I’ve had for 7 years and have never replaced the thermal paste or pads; only cleaned the fan once about 3-4 months ago. Maybe I’m just lucky.

Hi, many thanks for your information. Every little helps so to speak.
Glad your PS seems to run as expected. I recently sold a PS and cant remember any loud noises from it, although I played at my old house sitting very far away and it was placed in a cabinet (although it was open when playing). I think playing with an headset on definitely makes things a bit better. A friend at work says his pro ramps up and down but never seems that noisy, but without comparing I cant comment.
