Bungie is taking a punt at the extraction shooter genre with Marathon, a PvPvE reimagining of its sci-fi series from the 90s.
It was great to finally see the game in action with the recent showcase, but if we’re being honest, we don’t think Bungie really did the best job at explaining the deeper intricacies of its upcoming shooter.
While we didn’t get to play the game at the recent previews, we’ve been scouring the various articles and videos of those that did, and for us, that's when we really started to get excited about Bungie’s next venture.

Whether it’s the runner abilities and how they’re not quite as hero-shooter as they first seemed, or how loot works and relates to the overall progression of the game, we’ve boiled everything you need to know about Marathon into a beefy yet concise video over on our YouTube channel.
While there’s still plenty we’d love to see and learn about Marathon, we’re dying to get our hands on it. Sure, it’s a risky space and Sony is undoubtedly still feeling the sting of Concord.
But Bungie could be going for the three-peat of bringing a predominantly PC gaming experience over to console. It did it with FPS games with Halo; it did it with looter shooter MMOs with Destiny; now can it do it with the extraction shooter genre?

We know there are some great extraction shooters on PS5, like Hunt: Showdown 1896, but it’s not a genre that’s taken off on consoles in the ways Escape from Tarkov has on PC, for example.
It's quite the niche genre, we'll admit, but if anyone has a chance to make an exciting and deep extraction shooter experience, it’s Bungie. And certainly from all the facts we've gathered about Marathon, it's sounding like a solid foundation. Have a watch of the video and let us know if any of it changes your mind.
Will you be picking it up when it drops on September 23rd, 2025? Or is that as-yet-undisclosed price too much of a barrier for you? Extract those thoughts and vault them in the comments section below.

I'm not nearly as skeptical as it seems a lot of PlayStation fans are. Bungie has repeatedly shown they know how to get their hooks in you through pure fun gameplay.
I say we let them cook and give them the benefit of the doubt until proven wrong.
@wildcat_kickz The gameplay has never been a concern. It's everything around it that Bungie has proven to be a bit iffy on.
I'm hoping the monetization isn't too aggressive and they do not 'sunset' content I have paid for.
All I need to know is the release date! Im ready for my first proper Bungie release. Yes I slept on Destiny stupidly and never owned a single Xbox so also Halo 🤦♂️
price that would be nice to know
I’d happily give this a go providing lots of content isn’t paywalled. A mid price point with optional battlepass of a full price with battlepass included could be ok
@wildcat_kickz this
I was kind of on the fence on this having only seen Bungos trailers, however I'm leaning a little more in favour of it after watching StoneMountain64's video yesterday, so I'll check out PushSquares coverage as well I suppose.
The Bungie stream was quite poor but everything I’ve seen and read since has made me much more optimistic. I’m probably buying it day one now.
The aesthetics really don’t work for me. The characters have zero personality (that I’ve seen so far) and the extraction shooter genre can’t really be made for the masses imo.
I wish them well as I'll always have a soft spot for Bungie thanks to the early Halo days.
I just don't think the very idea of an extraction shooter sounds at all appealing to me. I mean you sweat it out so hard just to get a good weapon...and then you might lose it if you mess up just once and so decide to just not use it? And even if you don't lose it to another player, you still lose it anyway at the end of a season? Just sounds annoying more than fun to me but like I said I suppose it's just not for me.
Personally I like what Splitgate 2 is offering more and it's also free so I think that will be where my attention goes for my next shooter.
All i know is they are now called Snickers and half the size of what they used to be.
@PlatinumMikey The release date has already been announced, it's the 23rd September.
There's a lot of great feedback coming from the people that had the chance to play this game last week, so I'm quite looking forward to the release.
@UltimateOtaku91 yeah I know I was just saying that’s all I needed to know like 👍
Oh yes I wrote need instead of needed 😂
@Jey887 I totally get that. I personally don’t get too hung up on cosmetic mtxs, so as long as there’s plenty of progression built into the base game and future expansions/seasons are fairly priced, I think I’ll be ok. But yeah, I completely agree that archiving content is not cool. I really hope they learned that lesson.
No single player mode means no purchase.
@Hylian-Likely i’ll let you know as soon as we get full-packaged games that used to be Single co-op and multiplayer like bungies best (halo) games
@Boxmonkey agreed. the aesthetics look boring. game developers nowadays think bright colors = automatic fun
@Jey887 Sony monetized HD2 in the best possible way. Here is hoping they do the same here. No FOMO, no missed timed events.
@nomither6
I'd rather take something with color in it then all those boring brown and gray aesthetics that plagued almost every single game from like 2005-2015ish but that's just me.
If this is still online 12 months after launch I will be beyond surprised.
I quite like the way it looks and I am looking forward to the limited edition controller but as others have said I wish there was a single player campaign like in the old days when games had both. Buy for the single stay for the multi. As it is I won't be extracting my credit card for this one unfortunately.
@PegasusActual93 two extremes here. how about just making a game that doesn’t look like a boring cartoon (marathon) or drab & depressing? Can we get some balance? My point was bright colors in a game doesn’t automatically make it fun
also - “ all those boring brown and gray aesthetics that plagued almost every single game from like 2005-2015ish but that's just me.“
this ain’t true in the slightest and is a huge exaggeration
