Last week, we asked the Push Square community to vote on their favourite PS5 games of 2025 so far.
Of course, it's still far too early to be discussing Game of the Year in a serious sense, but the results of our poll do perhaps shine a light on potential frontrunners. Indeed, it's always interesting to take stock of the titles that have already made an impact.
Over 3,200 votes were cast across a total of 50 games. According to you lot, these are the 20 best PS5 releases of the year up until this point...

20. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black - 26 votes (1%)
19. Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon - 31 votes (1%)
18. The Alters - 38 votes (1%)
18. The First Berserker: Khazan - 38 votes (1%)
16. Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster - 41 votes (1%)
15. Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time - 44 votes (1%)
14. Atomfall - 46 votes (1%)
13. Elden Ring Nightreign - 55 votes (2%)
12. Days Gone Remastered - 77 votes (2%)
11. Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii - 80 votes (2%)

9. Forza Horizon 5 - 91 votes (3%)
8. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered - 102 votes (3%)
7. DOOM: The Dark Ages - 112 votes (3%)
6. Blue Prince - 114 votes (3%)
5. Assassin's Creed Shadows - 190 votes (5%)
4. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - 206 votes (6%)
3. Split Fiction - 233 votes (7%)

We're not going to get into the debate of whether Split Fiction is better than It Takes Two — the game's similarly beloved predecessor — but it's clear that developer Hazelight has struck upon a fantastic co-op formula. Featuring a shocking amount of gameplay variety and some really heartfelt storytelling, Split Fiction is a great choice for anyone looking to unwind with a friend in front of the TV.
Co-op games are usually a harder sell than single player titles — especially on lists like this — so if you're making the top three, you're doing something very right.
2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 - 316 votes (9%)

Sequels can be awkward. Sometimes they don't quite live up to their predecessors and struggle to match the vibes that fans fell in love with — and other times, they can try to be a bit too different from what came before.
But Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 managed to smash the expectations that were set by the first game. An often unforgiving RPG, this medieval adventure is all about immersion — the kind of release that sucks you into its suitably muddy world and keeps you there for hours and hours at a time.
1. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - 939 votes (29%)

Look, there's not much to say about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that hasn't already been said. Sandfall Interactive's debut RPG utterly dominated our poll, racking up almost triple the votes of its second place rival.
Alongside its ability to tell an incredibly clever, emotional, and engaging story, Clair Obscur also nails its focus on turn-based combat, providing a system that feels both fresh and rewardingly in-depth. Even for veteran RPG studios, there are lessons to be learned here.
For us, the big question is whether anything can actually challenge Clair Obscur for the eventual Game of the Year awards. Because right now, it's looking like the overwhelmingly obvious favourite.
What do you make of this list, then? Are these really the top 20 PS5 games of 2025 so far, or do you have any personal favourites that deserve a place? Continue to argue in the comments section below.

Expedition is the goat of 2025, but really happy KCD2 got 2nd place.
I have yet to play Split Fiction but this list looks perfect to me. Cannot wait to get into that one. KCD2 and E33 are 1 and 1a for me but I agree with their ranking as well
I really must pick up E33, just waiting for a sale
Glad to see Blue Prince in 6th. Great game, don't sleep on it!
E33 is the only #1 for me though, glad to see many others agree.
Death Stranding 2 is gonna be number one on this list pretty soon for a lot of people
Looks like im out of the mainstream as far as gaming goes, can't abide rpg's especially turn based ones 😃
I have to agree wholeheartedly with the first two picks, and in that order as well. I have a feeling Death Stranding 2 will take one of those spots. It’s been a fantastic first half of the year for gaming.
There are quite a few releases coming up that I'm looking forward to but yeah. Expedition 33 is going to be very difficult to defeat for me. Just an honest to God masterpiece.
Good to see KCD up there. It will be close between Split Fiction, KCD, Clair Obscure and Death Stranding. So far, this year has been incredible for gamers. I think one or two titles will yet have to join the GOTY lidt of candidates.
For me, the game of the year will always have to be KCD II. A very special game that together with BG3 would make a very exclusive list of all-time favorite games.
I also remember seeing Claire Obscure in a trailer last summer thinking that this game could be special. I really hope they will consider putting out to PS Plus.
I agree with number 1 and number 2.i have Clair obscur expedition 33 as my number one game so far and kingdom come deliverance 2.word up son
Indy is the game I‘m interested in, but the current prices are still too high for my taste. Hopefully we will see a significant price drop for Black Friday.
It’s been a mediocre year for PlayStation so far tbh. The only game on this list that interests me is yakuza. Hopefully silent hill f delivers to save this year from being abysmal oh and marvel cosmic invasion and Mina the howler
Edit: I forgot the sonic racing game looks sick too so maybe this year wasn’t so bad.
Clair Obscur is so unique and special. YT videos in a hurry to beat the game playing it awkwardly almost made me pass on this gem. Plus you'd think it's some short RPG, I'm finding pretty long with my completionist play style. And it's made me love Metaphor all over again. Hopefully I'll get KCD2 down the line cause I know I'll love it.
Still so many potential bangers this year- Death Stranding 2, Mafia, Ghost of Yotei, Hell is Us, Crimson Desert, Wuchang Fallen Feathers, etc.
Expedition 33 is the only one I've cared about, and for me, it's been 'meh' so far. I struggle with the dodge mechanic. The windows seem wonky and the erratic enemy movement makes timing more difficult.
Other than that, an abysmal year for my tastes. I will pick up Suikoden 1 & 2 when it goes back on sale. Looking forward to Gears and Trails in the Sky. Resident Evil 9 is the next game I'm very much looking forward to.
Not even close.
I'll be giving Expedition 33 another chance on Game Pass soon.
No love for Atelier Yumia and Trails through Daybreak 2 saddens me.
Wow I can't believe I've only played MH Wilds this whole year even tho there's a lot of games on that list I want to buy and play. I need to get on them but my gaming habits lately have been weird
@IntrepidWombat knocking the difficulty down to story doesn’t affect trophies and makes the dodge mechanic way easier. It’s worth sticking with. I got to about the last couple of hours of the game and was getting trounced until I did that. No shame in it, and there’s always NG+ if you want the challenge afterwards.
I would swap #1 and #2. Expedition 33 is a great game, no question, but honestly after having played through it, it's a TOUCH overrated imo. If the market wasn't so starved for turn-based JRPG-inspired games that don't look like anime, I don't think it would be getting the glazing that it is. On the other hand, KCD2 was one of the five best gaming experiences I've had in the last decade (BG3, Elden Ring, Witcher 3 & Mass Effect Legendary being the others). Absolutely no way KCD2 isn't #1 in my book. And I freaking hated the first game even.
@IntrepidWombat I'm really bad at parrying and dodging in games , but if you listen to the audio and visual hints I find it a lot easier , for example a lot enemies make a ping sound before they attack ,and your companions will tell you if you should parry, its just learning attacks and when to pause , there isn't that many variations , I just found it a lot easier than any dodge, parry mechanic in other games.
@Johnnycide Thanks - I think that's probably what I'll do. I had thought about spinning up Stellar Blade just to get into an action game mindset. I still need to finish the hard mode boss rush. If that doesn't do it, I'll take your advice for sure.
@Johnnycide I've found I'm putting more and more games on story mode lately , i just haven't got the patience anymore , its just far more enjoyable for me , ive been moving tainted grail down for the bosses and back up for the world enemies and I'm having a great time.
I would Switch mh wilds with Indiana jones and doom with blue prince
Does anyone know when Jurassic Park rebirth is coming out? Thought i may find the answer while trying to read any article on this playstation website
@Jrs1 I hate turn based games too but actually enjoyed Clair Obscur. You also have to parry and there are quick time events during the fights so that makes it completely tolerable. I actually ended up really enjoying the combat, and the story is incredible.
Nice to see AC Shadows make the top 5 and also nice to see Tainted Grail make the top 20. E33 though yeah is easily no 1 and KC2 is easily no 2, incredible games.
@Steeleye50 I see, i still don't know if it's for me but is good to see something relatively new do so well so that should be commended 👍
Of these, only picked up FH5 (and finished), as trying to work through my 'backlog' before buying more games! But this seems a fairly reasonable list.
Light-dark expedition 33 is something I'll certainly pick up eventually however, it looks great. For anybody who has played it, the Skill Up documentary is a very interesting watch! In fact, it's a good watch regardless. As a grown up myself, he is one of the few gaming content creators who puts out videos that are seemingly tailored for adults!
@Dimey Skill up is only reviewer I take seriously, he's been 100% accurate for the last 2 years.
9 of them are day one releases on Game Pass, incredie value on Plus 🙄
Honestly, didn’t like KCD2 and feel like Clair Obscur is the most overrated game to release in recent memory (in my opinion). It’s such a weird year in gaming. I keep hearing how stacked it is, but the first half has been the weakest I’ve thought games have been in a decade. Death Stranding 2 is probably the first big release for me all year. 🤷♂️
Happy to see Blue Prince in the top 10 though.
Clair obscur is going to be hard to beat for game of the year. I still need to get back into KCD2
Expedition 33 absolutely blew me away. Just the total package of story, gameplay and music.
33 is a flipping gorgeous game on all fronts. I keep considering picking it up but..... I just can't seem to get into turn based RPG's no matter how many times I try to dive in. I'm definitely in the minority here.
The Alters or Blue Prince I see reason in, great games. The rest, not of anything to me.
@Aquariusjive Understandable. I think 33 probably has a fair amount to it with the dodge/other things all turn based JRPGs don't have mechanically, despite a fair world and artstyle. I think it's overrated but it's still got ideas I can still understand the appeal.
Sorry for making this long and probably an unnecessary comment, but just felt like giving some recommendations (further down both Japanese and western ones I've looked into over about what 5 or more years now I think besides just my open to other genres and collecting games has helped with that, or agreeing as I have come across this too and found I love some mechanics better, story/characters it's up to you what your looking for but mechanically I found my ups and downs with some and felt like sharing that encase it helps.
Kind of why I hate racing games with manager modes don't have a defend option, it's unsportsmanlike I guess so we can't have it. Yet in solo play with AI or games with awkward AI or license tests/training, I do drive bad because the times or AI are so bad I was forced to and I drive better to achieve times/game goals then gracefully like they would want. Blame the devs not the player who is trying to keep up and ends up that way just to make it achievable to play the game, so has to resort to those strategies.
I started with FF13 and got into it but I sort of fell off it due to the mechanics and enemy padding besides Disk 2/9th chapter boss, I was also new to JRPGs or RPGs in general compared to Ratchet leveling systems for weapons or racing games approaches too. So while Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey on Xbox 360 or others I have tried I just fell off typical turn based.
FF13 Lightning Returns to me did it better of combat but it's mystery game focus is also not ideal of time spent doing things unless into that sort of thing. But then again FF series has it's mix of real time ones I just haven't played either or tactics games Square has over the years.
Different games that refine or continue turn based have their tweaks but I just don't care for them that much or other things I know I'm going to have to do in those RPGs that just puts me off. Maybe Atelier, Trials and others may be good but that turn based combat just puts me off.
But plenty of Tales of/Ys games with real time combat of course.
Even then going from strategy games, tower defence, tactics, grand strategy, 4X or different hack n slashes arenas/or action adventure level design or how 10 second power up bars work or combos/animations and whatever scale. They all different of ideas/budget.
Might give my experience/game recommendations. Western ones further down and many of my Japanese ones to start as that's what I started with. I've expanded more over time of research.
To me games like Conception had a 4 quadrants cycling approach around enemies (2 enemies, besides your main spaces so around 12 spots) and weak points approach I really liked. Each side you had your 3 spots for your 4 units army and your 1 slot for your protagonist. It can be a fan service game but to me the story choices were fine and the combat/dungeons while basic was enough of a mix up to be exciting to me.
I wish it had more to it of combat tweaks but for a 2009 PSP game remastered to PS4 and with a unique combat system I think it had a great idea even if in need of potential tweaks (not played the 2nd game on PS Vita/3DS so no clue if it improved anything or seen footage enough of it to tell).
Part 2:
To me that made turn based way more interesting then traditional way of select an option, get hit, use potions/items to defend or reduce it, even if not all support items are worth using compared to a dodge.
Diofield I tihnk did a fair job but it's lack of ideas did annoy me. It's political/resistance story was interesting, not great but compelling enough, the upgrades were interesting and different then other games so I appreciated that. The real time combat with tactical elements while abilities with cost use was more necessary then I expected.
But besides some ideas, even Valkyria Chronicles 4 from 2018 years earlier had more ideas and level goals to mix things up besides character classes or even more units and personality that series offers that varied and Diofield felt repetitive and disappointing. I platinum-ed it as it's an easy enough platinum but even still.
That or to me tactics games with their mix of chess and powerups (or open worlds and objects/small arenas of old western ones like Dtagonbone Staff on PS2 are pretty hit and miss I find especially compared to Disagea 1 which for PS2 onwards platforms tweaks is just way more flexible, even one offs around that time were better but western games have gotten better with their approaches)
or other mechanics for level scaling or like Scrabble with instead of triple word scores you would have invulnerability or effect buffs/nerfs or only this level characters can be effected or a number of different things, among other NIS tactics games mechanics (at least with Disgaea compared to XCOM, Mario Rabbids or others approach whether more menus or explore and stop for tactics combat type of format, or Valkyria Chronicles third person shooter and map tactics combo).
Fire Emblem does it fair too. Or Advance Wars on Nintendo platforms. Though to me Advance Wars kind of felt restrictive like Diofield did of set units or how many you generate like other games but still the buildings or cost of units and more was a bit eh. But I played Wargroove and while it has more goals to it I found them tedious, so evolving something can be good but I shouldn't complain if it did achieve more but I found it not great. Not a bad game but just yeah I should eat my words but I still praise what was there.
To me I've gotten to the point of being picky with tactics games the way I am racing, platformers or shooters, so while I was a newcomers I've gotten to that what I seek in them stage now. But still open to exploring them.
That or I guess the similar to Neptunia or Eternal Sonata the radar of attack space and move around the arenas, so instead of a Tales of series arena more limited space to move and turn based between both sides that way.
Even the dungeon crawlers I got more into the Moero series then I did some similar on 3DS or the NIS Labyrinth one as I didn't like the way it worked, but Moero series besides being fan service games to me mixed it's simplicity well. Same with Seven Pirates, fan service game but it's simple turn based and other mechanics were pretty fun for how simple it was.
There may be a method out there you just need to find the right one (or I guess also right western type approach of world, tone and more you may be looking for as well).
Part 3:
I mostly gave Japanese game options as that was my experience going through those mechanics, many western ones aren't bad but mostly ones like Mario Rabbids or Mutant Year Zero I found surprised me even though I hated the open world and stop to tactics play but I have come around due to those games. XCOM just was too old school and annoying when I found many Japanese ones had solved those old school details even during PS2 era.
But it varies. Even some Warhammer tactics games are pretty appealing of world building and accessible mechanics. For tactics, strategy games, and more. Quality varies per devs execution but still. I got into Mechanicus and it's fine but Age of Sigmar Stormbound seems the better choice of more flexible tactics design.
@Icey664 you must have missed the launch sale. Was on sale during pre orders and ended a week or 2 after launch. Not sure how much it was on playstation, but I think it was close to half price on steam.
I bought monster hunter wilds and expedition 33 out of this list. But I feel like this year gaming has been boring for me.
Good to see all the first party exclusives there! Oh wait, there’s only one and it’s a remaster.
Well at least I’ll get 5 more Astro Bot levels at some point…
@Jrs1 I get that. Just I've tried turn based games in the past and never get very far. I really could not put Clair Obscur down until I beat it. To be fair though, I did play it on easy mode. Even then, there were still some challenging fights towards the end. Take care!
@Steeleye50 Ah you never know may try again one day 👍
Great list, I've actually played most of these. But just started the Alters, I'm only about 5 hours in but my God, is it good. I bought it just for the premise alone, which is really interesting and thought inducing. Gameplay is fun and I feel mechanics are introduced slow enough to not get out of control too quickly. I'm really enjoying it.
Nice list.
Expedition 33 is unfortunately not anywhere near my top game, Ive put in 50 hours but nothing about it gells with me at all. Some of that will be the parry mechanics of course, I dont want them in a turn based jrpg and I struggle with it. But even the characters (I cheered when we lost Gustave as I hated him) though Esquie is a great character. Even the music doesnt do much for me. This is pretty weird as Im not a contrarian and I normally get it when everyone loves a game, so Im left scratching my head wandering what everyone is seeing that Im not!
Not to worry, we are only halfway through the year and theres been plenty of titles I have loved. Happy to see Blue Prince got some love, and also Fantasy Life, but its weird to see Forza Horizon 5 in the lists when I played it so long ago. I did double dip though, its fantastic on a pro and well worth another play through.
With so many great games coming at such a fast rate, its very hard to see why some people state we are in the worst gen ever... feels like the best to me.
@Jrs1
For me, they beat COD 29 are whatever number they are on. Pretty good game and the mechanics of the turn based seem secondary to the rest of it
There is no doubt that Expedition 33 is a spectacular debut title. It's parry / dodge mechanic takes queues from FromSoftware titles, especially Sekiro. The counterattack animation and sound effect on perfect and gradient parries never gets old. Agree with the rankings, but I think both E33 and KCD2 are brilliant RPGs in their own right and both deserve GoTY nominations.
Apart from Death Stranding 2, other potential great games coming are Metal Gear Solid Delta, Mafia Old Country, and Ghost Of Yotei. Time will tell how they come out.
