Well, another year, another healthy dose of The Game Awards over and done with. Geoff Keighley went big with his tenth anniversary show, packing a shocking number of surprise announcements into a lengthy live event.
But what was the pick of the bunch? What was the best game announcement at The Game Awards 2024? That's what we're here to find out.
We'll start with the opinions of our editorial staff, and then ask you to choose a game from our poll. We'll be putting together a top ten community-voted list next week based on these polls results, so choose wisely!
Aaron Bayne, Video Producer
There were some absolute corkers at Geoff’s show last night, but atop the pile for me is Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Despite being one of those guys that could play Uncharted and The Last of Us games forevermore, I’m giddy at the prospect of ND trying its hand at something completely new. It’s got an immaculate sci-fi 80s aesthetic with real-world brands, gorgeous in-game cinematics, and even an original score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (are you kidding me?!?!).
I’m dying to know more about its bounty hunter narrative, and I’m very curious to see how ND tackles what is seemingly going to be a melee-based gameplay experience. But after crafting up some of the best stories to bless games and genuinely one of the best-feeling third-person shooters ever made in The Last of Us Part 2, I am so ready for whatever the team is cooking up here.

Despite how incredible and exciting so many of the announcements at The Game Awards last night were, I feel like I could close my eyes and pretty accurately imagine how every one of them plays. That is except for Project Robot, from ICO and Shadow of the Colossus developer genDESIGN.
This is one of the most celebrated teams in the industry finally returning after such a long absence, and it's shot to the top of my most anticipated list. The team's first venture into the sci-fi realm greatly excites me, and the major unknown that is its gameplay loop means the experience could go in so many different directions.
It's been a long time coming, but I'm confident the wait will be worth it: we don't know what Project Robot is, and that's the most exciting thing possible.
Robert Ramsey, Assistant Editor
In an utterly shocking twist, The Witcher 4 isn't my pick for game of the show. I think this is because we already knew it was coming — not the trailer (which is superb, by the way), but the project itself.
So with that in mind, I think Project Century is the announcement that resonated with me the most. I've been a massive Like a Dragon / Yakuza fan since the PS3 days, and while I'll never grow truly tired of that franchise, I've wanted RGG Studio to try its hand at something new for a long time.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Project Century will have a lot in common with the team's previous escapades, but the setting, the tone of the trailer, the level of violence... I can't wait to see more of this one. And to top things off, it looks like a next-gen RGG title. Let them cook!

I think Mafia has been a consistently underrated franchise ever since it debuted in 2002. That original game – ported to the PS2 in 2004 – was unfairly compared to GTA at the time, even though it was much more cinematic and methodical by design. The same was true of sequel Mafia 2, and while I found Mafia 3 somewhat repetitive, I think a lot of its brilliant ideas generally got drowned out.
Now we’ve got Mafia: The Old Country, a title taking us to Sicily in the 1900s. I think in a year where GTA 6 is expected to rule the open world roost, this is going to deliver something genuinely different, with its historical backdrop and strong focus on storytelling. I still need to see more gameplay to be 100% confident, but the vibes of The Game Awards trailer were immaculate.
Stephen Tailby, Assistant Editor
Josef Fares is a somewhat contentious figure in the industry thanks to his exuberant, at times cocky personality, but the truth is his games are that good that he can get away with it. Hazelight Studios' A Way Out and It Takes Two are both unique, varied, and fun co-op adventures, and Split Fiction looks like it could be the team's best effort yet.
The wacky premise allows for a clash of different styles, promising a vast amount of variety in aesthetics and gameplay. The trailer shows off glimpses of numerous levels, each with unique ideas. Judging by the studio's previous games, I expect the level of polish on all its disparate parts will be high, too. It remains to be seen if the storytelling can match all that imaginative design, but I'm extremely excited by what I've seen so far — and only a few months to go.

We tried to keep this about new game reveals, rather than updates or fresh trailers for existing titles.
Not a bad list to choose from!
Have to agree with Stephen. I love a quality couch co-op game that I can play with my son and that is what Hazelight does best. Plus, Split Fiction is only three months away, so I can actually get excited.
Cant keep it to one because there is way to much cool stuff this BL pile is gonna be insane.
Project Century took the top cake for me. It's kinda unfortunate that this might be because Kimura was so done with Judgment series and are not renewing his contract. Judgment was a great side game for Yakuza universe because Yagami was a civilian. So you see a different side of the world compared to when you play as Kiryu (like the School Story was really great in Lost Judgment).
And after Cyberpunk 2077 disaster and how they lied about it, I'm not really hyped at all with Witcher 4. The studio is dead to me.
Intergalactic just because I am a big naughty dog fan them along with Santa Monica really made me want to get a ps4 when it came out because I
Would have played what ever games those two studios would release
My highlights were Project Century, the Okami sequel, the Fumito Ueda game, and Split Fiction. If I liked the trailer more, I would give a nod to Intergalactic, even though I think the game itself will be very good.
@Paulbuck28 But I thought no one liked Naughty Dog and they are the worst developer of all time? Lol. Definitely got hyped of this over everything else.
Has to be Intergalactic for me.
My top 5:
1. Onimusha
2. VF 6
3. Project Century
4. Ninja Gaiden Ragebound / Okami 2
5. Intergalactic
Project century all the way. And witcher 4 video that was far better than a chapter of secret level series
I voted Virtua Fighter
Virtua Fighter for me, I've been a fan of the series for 30 years and Onimusha is another I'm excited for. Turok would have been close to the top but it being a 3rd person shooter spoiled it a bit and I need to see more of ND's game
Intergalactic, for sure. We had heard rumblings of this and that, fantasy, sci-fi etc, but now we have actually seen (and heard) the concept. And it looked and sounded like a Sci-Fi made by people that actually like movies, and for a long time, even some Sci fi movies felt like they were made by people that didn't actually like movies.
The signs are good. And I'd rather see someone wearing suitably nostalgic Adidas, rather than some generic made up sneakers
Don't underestimate what set dressing like that can add. We now know it is set in a universe where the 80's and 90's existed in some way, but in an alternative reality where we had spread throughout the galaxy and where Porche made space 911's 😛
Intergalactic takes it for me, but Okami 2 is a close second because who could have possibly seen that coming.
Gen Design's new game is in third because I'm there for anything Fumito Ueda makes.
Really wish we got an update on Sword of the Sea though.
A tough choice to say the least! I voted Virtua Fighter but I was also hyped for Witcher 4, Intergalactic, Project Robot, Project Century, Elden Ring Nightreign...
Seriously there was so much packed into this show!
Intergalactic by an edge perhaps. Ueda’s new title and Witcher 4 are up there, but Intergalactic looks like it may be soonest to release.
And also got to say that it’s crazy we’ll be getting not one but two Obsidian RPGs next year.
I am still shocked that we saw nothing of Kojima though. Surely that was proof that a Sony showcase is soon.
It has to be The Witcher 4. The third game is a seminal game that arguably is the best game ever made.
Why can't I vote for Dispatch?
I went with Naughty Dog, but also liked the look of many others. Being old, I remember enjoying Turok back in the day, and the new one certainly looks good. Something I shall keep an eye on with interest...
Onimusha. Give us a port of 1-4(i know 1 is already out) while we wait you cowards
The miniscule representation of Ninja Gaiden and Okami among those polled makes me feel old and out of touch with the youth.
A very tough choice between Witcher 4 and Intergalactic. I gave my vote for the latter in the end as it's great to see something new from ND, especially in the Sci-Fi genre.
I'd say Okami sequel was the biggest shock announcement and I would've picked that, if it weren't for new Naughty Dog IP. Can't help it, I love their games, and that just about edges it.
Project Century... those animations 🤌
In a night full of great reveals, it’s Intergalactic that has fully captured my imagination. I thought the teaser was just fantastic.
I’ve not watched the show but I’m looking forward to Elden ring and the new game from the makers of It Takes Two
1. Okami sequel
2. Onimusha
Both titles i never thought i would see get new releases. Even with limited information, they were the biggest reveals for me.
Excited for some of the other reveals too though like Intergalactic, Mafia, Project Century, and Ninja Gaiden
As excited as I am about Intergalactic, we kind of knew based on rumors that the next Naughty Dog game was going to be in space. So while I didn't expect this to be here I at least kind of knew about it's presence.
Now with that out of the way... ONIMUSHA!!!
This was a complete surprise and a very welcome one at that. Capcom has proven with their resident evil remakes and the newer games that they still have what it takes, so having them revisit another thing in their back catalogue has me very excited.
Helldivers 2 would have got my vote but I chose intergalactic even thought kind of skeptical. Hopefully it's good. Really want to see gameplay. Also where is Cory barlogs game? His last release of gow 2018.
Oh, and Okami! I loved the original!
Intergalatic for me, can’t wait to see more. Im so hyped to see what they’ll do with a sci fi setting.
It’s probably split fiction for me as the wife and I loved It Takes Two. She’s not a massive gamer so it’s always great when I can get a game that we both enjoy so this will be a day one for us I think.
NONE of them I like from the list above.
I LOATHE it All.
Double Dragon
Split fiction looks cool too bad I don’t have anybody to play it with…
Torn between VF and Okami and Onimusha but voted for VF because it has been 18 years!!!!!!
Best: Okami, Onimusha
Worst: Intergalactic
Too many to choose from, but it's between Witcher 4, Intergalactic, Onimusha and Okami
Removed - trolling/baiting
@meistergeister, please phone your loved ones and connect with them.
Removed - harassment
@meistergeister So a black bald woman classifies as woke now? Let me guess you don't like Witcher 4 either.....
Okami 2. Came from nowhere and somehow really touched me.
Intergalactic reminds me how much I've missed Naughty Dog games.
An announcement trailer with great gameplay, nice and funny cutscenes and an actual release date in just three months? Hazelight, congratulations!
The Last Of Us 2 just the first of the remasters. That was the joke of the decade and thus the best.
Onimusha, Okami Sequel, and The Witcher IV. Not really vibing with anything else.
The one I would vote, The Long Dark 2 Blackfrost, is not in the list.
If we didn't already know about the Witcher, that would take top spot, but ooooohhhhhh man does Intergalactic look amazing! The Cowboy Bebop vibes are strong with this one!
Been saying for years we need a sci-fi spacey game from Naughty Dog!
Even though I don't think the actual reveal was that good the new genDESIGN game has ALL of my attention because Ico, SoTC and Last Guardian are all stellar!
Hard to choose just one. But my top 3 was Intergalactic, Witcher 4 & Split Fiction. All 3 looked fantastic.
Project Robot all day long
@SuperSilverback this was exactly me when I saw this this morning.
The answer is Witcher and if you disagree see me after class
Intergalactic, for sure, but that Ninja Gaiden game looks REAL GOOD! Project Robot is also clearly one to watch! And an Onimusha roboot. And an Okami sequel?! And Witcher 4… Exciting stuff!
Split Fiction, hands down! And I think in terms of what has actually been shown, it's not even close.
Witcher IV or Intergalactic - The Heretic Prophet (which is a remarkably lame and generic title) live solely by the pedigree of their IP and/or creators. It's perfectly fine to be hyped for those games. But best of show? Nah!
Ninja Gaiden was another pleasing surprise with enough gameplay as was Project Century. Those are my three favorites.
Elden Ring looked awesome, too. But that is almost boring at this point because every From Softwwlare game does.
I also want to spread a little bit of love for the terribly named Thick as Thieves, which looks like a fun concept and mention how insane it is that we get a new Screamer game, even though it a) appears nothing like the original games, b) doesn't look very appealing on it's own and c) gets extra minus points for not fully embracing the anime-cel-shading style in it's graphics. But I do love that it exists. Shows that even the most forgotten franchises can make a comeback.
My top 3:
1. Okami 2
2. Okami 2
3. Okami 2
Not really sold on the naughty dog game, though i didn't enjoy much from them since jak and daxter 1. So I am surprised to see it top this poll, though I am aware I'm in the minority for disliking the cinematic experience type games. There wasn't too much to go off in the trailer to tell if it will be a similair experience, but I'd sooner go watch a movie.
Elden ring wins it for me, even if it is a weird spinoff.
A pretty damn good list but not great for an is backlogged gamers
1 Witcher 4
2 Intergalactic
3 Spilt Fiction
4 Project Robot
Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon
Definitely Project Robot
Intergalactic, Onimusha and Project Robot all caught my attention, but I'll need to see a lot more to be sure. Split Fiction looks great, currently playing through It Takes Two with my wife and loving it so will likely give this a go.
For me it's a toss up between Split Fiction and Intergalactic.
It takes Two from Hazelight was my game of the year when it came out. I have never had so much fun playing a coop game before, there was so many neat and interesting ideas thrown into that game with alot of laughs to be had. So with that in mind, I'm super pumped for Split Fiction.
Naughty Dog is one of my all time favorite developers, up there with Hazelight and Rockstar among others. With so many of my favorite games created by the studio it's great to see their first new game in like 5 years and has got me hyped. The fact it's a brand new IP set in a sci-fi story is just the icing on the cake and I can't wait to learn more about it.
Probably Project Robot (I didn't catch the name, but same it in the article above) and didn't expect to see it. Wish it showed a bit more.
Then Intergalactic, Split Fiction, and Borderlands 4 for me!
Project Robot is the only choice
I honestly can't pick a favorite from among Nightreign, Witcher 4, Intergalactic, and Okami (with Onimusha very close, as well).
I'm just upset they got rid of Ciri's beautiful green eyes. And I hope she has a bit more personality then Geralt he felt like a husk to me.
I think it’s kinda wild, and a testament to how good the show was, none of us said Elden Ring. What a strong showing!
Okami 2 and onimusha sequel of course 😃
Naughty Dog exists in a space that I fill with books. Their games have a distinct lack of sploding ninjas. I don't have a problem with them doing their thing, it's just not for me anymore.
Anyway, Okami was the one I voted for. The game I'll play the most of will most likely be The Outer Worlds. Onimusha did make me yell. It's 2024 Capcom making a new Onimusha. I can't wait to see more. They are so awesome these days, and I just love seeing a company I've adored since I was 10 just wrecking sh*t, for years.
I thought it was an excellent show. Wish I had caught more of it here.
Technically Ninja Gaiden because an actual game was shown. But Project Robot would probably be the thing I want to get my hands on the most since its the next Team Ico project. Can't wait to see it in twelve years. Okami and Onimusha next, Capcom's got way more hits than they do misses, it's safe to assume anything they announce will be good.
Okami,Intergalactic,Onimusha, mafia & project robot for me.
Just catching up with all the news. Anything by Naughty Dog is always on my radar. However, I think Project Robot and Okami 2 top my list.
Hello there fellow gamers;
Even though my vote went to Onimusha Way of the Sword, because about fricking time, there are many others announcements that really resonated with me, such as:
Some of the best announcements I´ve seen in a long time.
And the backlog keeps on growing, huh? It is what it is 😜
Cheers and happy gaming everyone
Okami for me. But am hyped for many of them like Intergalactic, Onimusha, Ninja Gaiden etc.
Onimusha was the best apparent announcement by far. Hopefully it abandons the tank controls like the Resident Evil remakes Capcom has released recently. Project Robot was also intriguing but need to see more before confirming any excitement.
A lot of great-looking upcoming games! But nothing beats the serotonin my all time favorite game, so Witcher IV it is! Also, I love the diversity of opinion in these comments.
Intergalactic THC. It's about smoking weed in outer space.
Project Robot for me.. looks utterly bonkers
Surprised that Nightreign is so low. Easily by far the most exciting game in the show. Also surprised that Intergalctic was so high. I fully expect it to be great because it's Naughty Dog but personally the trailer was kinda dull and didn't really show much
I screamed at the top of my lungs when they revealed Onimusha. I was so hyped.
