Ah, October, otherwise known as the month before GTA 6.
Indeed, it was an incredibly busy 31 days for new PS5 releases, following on from an equally manic September — and that's going to make this latest Game of the Month poll all the more intriguing.
October's most high profile title arguably launched just a few days ago: Phantom Blade Zero, the PS5 console exclusive that had been wowing onlookers for years with its gameplay trailers, finally arrived on the 29th.
The Chinese action game earned extremely impressive review scores, and it seems to have been a big hit with fans of the genre.
Meanwhile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 actually managed to deliver what many are calling the series' best campaign in years, and Castlevania: Belmont's Curse revived Konami's iconic franchise in some style.
Other standouts included the eye-watering Star Wars: Galactic Racer — a fantastic racer that's gone down far better than anyone thought it would — and Final Fantasy Resonance, which turned out to be a brilliant callback to the property's traditional JRPG roots.
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve deserves a shoutout too; another super highly rated release, and quite possibly the most engaging Ace Combat game of the series' modern era.
Then you've got the more divisive stuff that some of you are bound to vote for: both Stupid Never Dies and Hellraiser: Revival struggled to capture the hearts of critics, but they're the kind of games where if you enjoy them, you probably really enjoy them.
But as always, only one of these titles can be crowned Game of the Month. Before we get to the all-important vote, though, here's a quick recap of our 2026 winners so far...
- January 2026: Trails beyond the Horizon
- February 2026: Resident Evil Requiem
- March 2026: Crimson Desert
- April 2026: Pragmata
- May 2026: 007 First Light
- June 2026: The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales
- July 2026: Assassin's Creed: Black Flag - Resynced
- August 2026: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2
- September 2026: Onimusha: Way of the Sword
Now then, what was your PS5 Game of the Month for October 2026? Cast your decisive vote in our poll, and then explain yourself in the comments section below.
Voting closes on Thursday the 5th November 2026 at 00:00 BST.

Phantom blade zero for me definetly i know final fantasy star wars galatic racer and silver pines are suppoaed to be great thpugh as well im enjoying castlevania belmonts curse mostly other than being frustrated with the game and getting lost its still a great game though
Really difficult decision this month, I went for galactic racer as it's my personal GOTY, played some phantom blade zero round a mates and immediately bought it for myself yesterday.
Really enjoyed Belmont's Curse as well, must resist the black Friday sale tomorrow!
Phantom Blade Zero. Started slow a bit too slow but after spending 10 hours straight on it today its now in my top 5 of the year.
Galactic Racer is the only game out of this list that I just couldn't put down, though Phantom Blade Zero is great as well, I just haven't put enough time into it yet.
Can I vote for FF Resonance, Order of the Sinking Star AND Silver Pines? No? The system is broken!
It's between Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Phantom Blade Zero for me
This one is really hard! It’s out of 2 options for me - Star Wars Galactic Racer which is great and I played it for most of the month. Or there’s Phantom Blade Zero, also great, but only played it from the end of October. Which do I vote for 🤔
Reminded how utterly ludicrous August's winner was. Marvel Tokon, Plague Tale Resonance, Star Wars Zero Company, Mortal Shell 2...and then people vote for a literal port.
Edit: Also, too many games in October to choose from. Anything from Star Wars Galactic Racer, Final Fantasy, Phantom Blade, Valor Mortis, Ace Combat etc. deserve to win
Phantom Blade zero all day every day, already got platinum for it I enjoyed it that much
Final Fantasy Resonance, Tales of Eternia Remastered and Ace Combat 8 and it's not even a competiton.
Legit tough to only pick one with this list. I would pick Phantom Blade Zero but I'm about 10 hours in but I did finish Valor Mortis so Valor Mortis will get my pick for the month.
Oh man! Making me have to choose between Phantom Blade Zero and Galactic Racer is just sinister!
Final Fantasy Resonance. Turn based, pixel art perfection. Phantom Blade 0 would have been my next choice; I played a bit at a friends place and it is quite good. Waiting for the disc next year before I formally play it though, so FFR it is.
If you would’ve told me that I’d be voting for Galactic Racer against a Castlevania and Final Fantasy game a month ago, I’d have called you crazy, but that’s exactly what I did.
Castlevania and Final Fantasy both had better games (to me) that were similar to them this year (Well Dweller and Adventures of Elliot), but Galactic Racer is the most fun I’ve had with a racing game since maybe the PS2 era.
I’m sure Phantom Blade Zero is great too, but… without a demo, I don’t know if it’s for me.
While I like phantom Blade, I ultimately chose valor mortis.
I think phantom Blade has some glaring design issues that the internet sphere is glazing over because the hype compels the masses to overlook a lot of issues with both its coverage pre release and personally it's combat readability/precision problems I'm seeing having played it now for 30 hrs. Action combat games are my bread and butter and having played most of them lends a broad perspective of what works and doesn't for me, and this one is messy, albeit beautiful in that mess.
I think of sekiros precision compared to this in terms of readability and parrying. PbO doesn't even come close to having that precision and thus the fights are far more a mess and spammy in terms of overcoming them. Tanking and pray parrying along with spamming animation heavy combos is really the name of the game.
Like I said looks great but plays like a hot mess you meet at a bar but would never take home to mom and dad.
Phantom blade zero for me. I agree with @DennisReynolds that it started off a bit slow but it soon picked up and I'm loving it. I've just met the first boss that's giving me a right old headache but I know I can and will batter the living daylights out of the despicable biatch later. Galactic racer is a close 2nd and it's an awesome game but PBZ is just an awesome experience. Best birthday present I've bought myself in years.
@KundaliniRising333 git gud...
@somnambulance The game is good - trust me bro
@Northern_munkey oh I'm sorry are you throwing out a common soulslike troll response to a game you have vehemently denied being a soulslike?
Why would I need to get good having got the platinum on darks souls 2,3,bloodborne,sekiro and elden ring if this is nothing more than an action game no where near the difficulty of those titles...
I'm progressing through just fine, it's the mess of the combat I find unfulfilling, whereas those other titles you really feel a mastery occurring. Here it's just a hot mess of animation clutter.
🤣
All that said though I'm enjoying pbo more than I did dawnwalker, onimusha, and control resonant, so I guess that says something too 🤣 I would put it up there in my top 3 for the year even.
Just been trying to make it clear that the review build difficulty the journos played is not what released.
@KundaliniRising333 I was only pulling your leg dude..
@Northern_munkey I know I know. Lol
You can tell I'm just conflicted on pbo as there are design problems that make what is otherwise a near masterpiece that hold me back from seeing it so.
Can't stop playing it though lol. Wait until you get the secret third phase boss fights fighting two and three at once. Whewwww what glorious a mess.
@Oram77 I’m sure it is, but I don’t know if I’ll like it. A demo would help. I’m sort of burnt out of certain kinds of games and I just don’t know if it’s for me. I was bummed yesterday when I finally booted up Control Resonant to find that the game feels like a Platinum Games type of deal. I went in blind because I trust Remedy. Wasn’t expecting it to be basically their take on Metal Gear Rising. 😅
I just there was a demo, a trial, anything. I’d download that right now. Onimusha’s demo sold me. Even if I didn’t love that one, it was fun enough.
@Northern_munkey Is that boss where she summons those tentacle things out of the ground during the fight? Yeah she was really tough for, 2nd phase was easier then the first though.
@KundaliniRising333 I'm finding the combat to be quite intuitive to be honest. The blue and red flashes are the key thing to watch for. I can see what you mean as I thought it was a bit messy at first but there is a rhythm to it. There's not much wrong with it but we are not always going to think equally about things. I was wondering if the reviewers had a different build because the difficulty does seem to be a dividing factor. I'm playing it on the default setting and apart from this one boss that's giving me a run around I've not encountered anything that hard to defeat.
@DennisReynolds no this boss starts off on her own..you give her a good hiding then she summons two minions who are proving to be a right old pain in the arse. Trying not to give out spoilers.
Gonna vote FF, and it's really enjoyable, but it's the only game I got last month. I will get AC8 for sure before the end of the year, and Phantom Blade Zero will be the game of whatever month it will release on disk.
@Northern_munkey I totally get the combat mechanics I just think it's messy. But I hear you man. Yeah in terms of Dick of difficulty I'm actually happy that it's harder than it was represented but I'm going to be honest like if I was on the other side of that fence and bought this game based on reviews saying it was not that difficult and definitely not in the realm of a Soul's like I'd be f****** pissed that I spent money on something that was clearly misrepresented whether that be because they had an easier build or just glazed it it's just not cool for the people that were looking for a fairly straightforward action combat game that delivered a power fantasy.
Cuz you may look cool fighting and all but if you're dying 10, 15, 20 times on a boss or stuck on a boss for hours (which many are according to forums/reddit), that ain't the diificulty power fantasy that some of these reviewers were suggesting...
