With the summer livestreams out of the way, we're now entering that period of the year where brand new game releases dry up and the news cycle slows to a crawl — unless you're Xbox, that is.
It is the perfect time to dive into your backlog and play some PS5 titles you have been meaning to get to... if you actually have one. I'm notorious for simply not having a backlog; I manage to pretty reliably keep up with the game release cycle and am rarely in a position with mountains of unplayed titles.

As such, these quiet summer months always present a challenge to me: what do I play when there's nothing to play? (In reality, I know there's always far too much out there I could be playing.)
To pass the time, after unlocking the Platinum Trophies in 007 First Light and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, I was browsing my PS5 digital game collection. In search of something to play, I came across Immortals of Aveum.
This was one of those games from a new studio that was doing the rounds based on the talent it had leading it. Veteran developers from the Dead Space and Call of Duty franchises formed Ascendant Studios, and its debut game turned out to be its only one as a company together.

The developer is no more after just one title — god this industry sucks sometimes.
You'll never get a sequel, but if you're looking for something to play over the summer, then I think Immortals of Aveum is worth going back to.
It is a first-person shooter all about magic rather than bullets: you blast enemies with magic and work through a single player campaign that combines both linear missions and open zone areas. I'm about halfway through it now, and these gameplay hooks are what's keeping me coming back for more.
Exploring the somewhat open locations while blasting bad guys, upgrading my powers, and experimenting with new ones is a joy. The team clearly put a lot of effort into making the magic shooting feel good, as cycling through your rifle, shotgun, and SMG-esque curses allows for fun combos and a power trip enhanced by your abilities.

I don't think there's a whole lot more to Immortals of Aveum — the story is completely throwaway, and the graphics aren't great for 2026. However, where it matters most (and what you'll be doing most), the game offers a genuinely fantastic experience.
As the title opens up some more, I'm encountering puzzles to solve, very light Metroidvania elements where I currently lack the magic to interact with something, and some mystical challenge rooms. If anything, Immortals of Aveum feels great to play and is now providing more reasons for me to return after a session or two.

Better yet, there's a good chance you already have the game in your PS5 library. Immortals of Aveum was a PS Plus Essential game back in mid-2024, so if you were keeping up with your game redemptions, you probably already have it.
Do I think the game is some kind of hidden gem? No. I reckon the Metacritic score of a 69 is a little bit low based on my experience so far, but this is no modern classic. It's a decent, solid experience you can have for roughly 15 hours and then move on to the next. In a quiet summer period, I've found tons of enjoyment in it, and I think you might too.
Have you played Immortals of Aveum? Did you enjoy the PS5 magic shooter? Put your thoughts in the comments below.

Tried about 4 hours of this game and to be honest it was just incredibly bland to me. The characters especially were just laughably dull and cliché.
tried it for 30 mins and couldnt get into it myself.
It launched right next too starfield and armored core 6 when it was intially supposed to launch in July. Low key think had it launch earlier it would what found some success maybe. But hey the entire dev team pretty much moved under absurd ventures (one of the Houser bros of rockstar fame) new company and are making a game so there’s that.
I booted this up for about 40 mins like last year or something and I couldn't stand the characters, they were kinda douchy. However, the concept of Magic Shooters is AWESOME, so I hope it's done again in a better way.
Played it for 20 mins and lost interest.
I enjoyed my time with this. It falls into the same category as something like Forspoken - nothing groundbreaking, but it's a good time.
I loved the game personally. I’m sad the studio didn’t really make it.
Magic shooters are so neat as a concept, but I had my fill with Ghostwire Tokyo. This one seems like the kind of game you look at once or twice, say "Oh, neat" and move on.
It's a shame because I also gave this game a fair shot, I wanted to like it and it's an admirable effort but I just couldn't get into it.
I thought this game was really fun. I got it on a sale for like 15 bucks so I didn't have a heavy monetary investment in it but it's a good game
Thank you. I like articles about this. Games that came out that were buried in the news cycle.
AND ITS $7 RIGHT NOW.
It is millenial slop, but it is a guilty pleasure.
I played and finished this at launch and loved it
I enjoyed it for what it was but the story was bland, and the characters were.... A choice for sure. Too bad it bombed commercially
Needed a specific comment to say the soundtrack is absolutely banging for this game. Hidden gem!
@FinneasGH Parts of it sound a lot like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, but obviously this came out before it!
This one is in my backlog list. I will play it eventually. I like the premisse.
PS gave it a 6. And that’s about right.
I wouldn’t recommend anyone to pick this in their backlog.
Play something better and worthwhile
This one was definitely mediocre. Couldn't give it more than a couple of hrs. Was genuinely over praised imo.
I tried it and quickly left it behind. It did seem fun actually. I have spent more time with worse games, I can tell you!
all i remember about aveum is that i made it to the credits,, aggressively bland game that could have been better.
This game was just too YA for me. Like a Divergent fps or something.
@IntrepidWombat Heretic, Wizordum, and Amid Evil are great.
"New game releases dry up, and the news cycle slows to a crawl — unless you're Xbox, that is."
That's true, Xbox is releasing Halo in July.
On sale for $7.99, and probably isn't so bad as to make it not worth that much
I completely agree with everything written here. The story and dialogue are not going to win any awards. But the gameplay is really fun. I rolled credits on it after not too many hours and really enjoyed my time with it.
@IntrepidWombat I liked Ghostwire, and the DLC also has one of the best jump scares in the history of gaming.
@IntrepidWombat Ghostwire was absolutely fantastic! A mesmerising and atmospheric recreation of Tokyo to explore with a great mix of spooky Japanese folklore and simple but catchy open-world gameplay. One of my favourite PS5 comfort games 💕
This game had a terrible story and insufferable characters.
Tried it but couldn't get into it. I played it after Wizordum which had blown my socks off
Such an underrated gem.
I watched a couple of gameplay videos and it looks like a Ghostwire Tokyo wannabe but with fantasy setting and somehow they make the gameplay looks pretty dull.
People should just play Ghostwire Tokyo.
Played it when it came to ps+ thought it was really good and doesn't deserve the criticism it got. The worst thing about it is a fairly bland story. Gameplay was really solid, nicely paced, good length. It's a great 7/10 game (in a positive sense. Not in the newly redefined sense of a 7/10 effectively being a 3/10)
@PuppetMaster i loved that game
Really good game. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
played it completed it looks great everything else about it is meh
its not rubbish but its not great either
6/10
I enjoyed it quite a bit, stuck with it for the Platinum. I definitely recommend it.
Absolutely vanilla, bang average
One of those "starts of weak, but grows stronger over time" games. Get past those middling few hours and the game starts to shine. Had seriously fun with this one.
I really don’t like first person shooters, but I liked Immortals of Aveum. I agree with a lot of the comments so far — characters and story are ‘meh’ but the gameplay and concepts are good enough to carry the game as one that is worth a spin.
Special shoutout to the graphics and performance. If you have a HDMI 2.1 TV then you can get frame rates up close to 120 fps with the game using frame generation, even with just a base PS5. I was playing just on my old PS5 at the time and with VRR enabled the frame rates were usually 70-90 but did regularly go over 100, iirc. I wonder if the Pro helps to pump out the a consistent 120, I’m not sure. It’s worth checking out if you’re into that kind of thing. Personally I don’t usually care much about the technical details of game performance, but I know a lot of enthusiasts are into that, so may want to check this one out.
I enjoyed it. I completed it which is rare for me
@nielsonjuan I got it for free and could only handle a handful of hours before getting bored.
I quite enjoyed this game. A solid 7 if you ask me. Certainly not bad for a new studio. A shame it didn't sell well enough to allow the studio a second crack.
I played it for about 6 hours and never went back the combat was pretty fun but everything else was kind of dull.
If this had been a third-person shooter it would have been a success. Generally, the people who play first-person shooters don't like magic and fantasy, and the people who like fantasy want to see their character run around a fun fantasy world.
One of the most forgettable games I've ever tried
I preferred Ghostwire Tokyo
Is this similar to Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden? If so, which is better?
@SEVENTEENSOILS I feel you !
Boring game....
Last year we had a Brat summer; this year we're having an Immortals of Aveum summer!
(I won't though, because I don't have a PS5)
@TerranIV
Heretic and Hexen were magical first person shooters and those still have a massive cult following. There has always been an audience for this kind of thing. I quite liked it myself other than the quippy Marvel writing being eye rolling occasionally and the game being somewhat unoptimized on PC (one of those games that was obviously optimized for console primarily). You can typically get it on sale for quite cheap too, I got it off Steam for just six bucks and its also on Game Pass.
It was on PS plus right? Never even installed it. Got too many great games to play ( I do use a backlog but mainly just play what I feel like)
You know this game was heavily promoted when it came out? It was or still is free to play if you got PS+. I couldn't bring myself to play it even for free because it looks so damn generic. The CoD with magic would have been cool if the rest wasn't so run of the mill.
@BentIeyma I enjoyed it more than forspoken as towards the end I just wanted it to finish but Immortals I actually really enjoyed
@Killionaire banishers is better. I suppose similar in a way. I like games with a bit of jank. I guess Forspoken is probably the closest one to compare but immortals is better
