I’ll be brutally honest, I was a Virtua Cop guy growing up.
Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of fun playing Time Crisis in the arcade, but I didn’t actually have it at home. I had the Virtua Gun for the SEGA Saturn y’see, so a lot of my youth was spent blasting through AM2’s rails shooter.
I bought a GunCon and Time Crisis off eBay not too long ago, and ran through the campaign several times. It’s timeless even today, and it obviously feels best with that hearty Namco accessory in your hands.
It was always going to be difficult for emulation outfit Implicit Conversions to transfer that experience to the PS5, then, where the gameplay needs to be broadly accessible to everyone. Of course, you’ve got the original d-pad controls in there, but that’s no fun, is it?
I’m surprised and delighted to see this version take advantage of the DualSense’s gyroscope, then, which offers a decent facsimile of the light gun experience.
Now look, I’m not going to lie to you: it’s not the same. This feels more like a cursor than a true light gun, but it does retain that physical action of making you feel like you’re aiming all around the screen.
The default control setup – which can be changed to suit your needs – maps the pedal to R1 and the trigger to Circle. Lining up headshots, particularly on those faraway enemies, feels pretty good.
The DualSense’s gyros aren’t perfect, and do have a tendency to drift over time. But you can push Triangle to recentre your aim, which is a thoughtful addition.
Obviously the PS1 version of this game does have some cutbacks compared to the original arcade release, but it benefits from extra stages which really extend the longevity of the overall campaign.
The superior NTSC version is selected by default, but you can toggle to the tardy PAL edition if you really want to deal with the iffy performance from your childhood. (Why would you torture yourself like that, though?)
The big bummer here, as we’ve already mentioned, is that there are no Trophies included. Obviously that doesn’t impact the overall experience – this is still a classic – but it is a shame Bandai Namco hasn’t included them to add value to the port overall.
Nevertheless, having spent an hour or so with Time Crisis’ new gyroscope controls, I’d love to see other GunCon games follow. Point Blank and Resident Evil: Dead Aim would be among my picks, but I’d obviously love the other Time Crisis titles as well.
Time Crisis is available now on PS5 and PS4 for $9.99/£7.99, and is included with the PS Plus Premium subscription. Have you given this emulated effort a go yet? Let us know below.

If you want a decent lightgun experience on PS5, get a PSVR2.
There's loads of time crisis style and first person shooters and the sense controllers allow aiming exactly the same if not better than any lightgun.
@PeteW Agreed there's better options out there, but they all cost a fair amount of money.
I think this is fun, even if the gyro doesn't really replace the experience of a light gun.
This game was so amazing in the arcades back when I'd give anything to be back there with my friends wasting time and money again for one night!
I'd enjoy whooping some randoms on Tekken again for sure!
@INeedGoodGraphics Absolutely underrated! And not horrible on a regular controller, but implementing gyro would be incredible.
I got super into this game recently on the MiSTeR with a GunCon, so good
@get2sammyb : does the super scope work with this ?
It's a shame they don't use PSVR2 as well for these games but gyro is probably the best case scenario outside of that.
I'm fortunate in having the Sinden Lightgun to play such games, with Virtua Cop 2 being my personal favourite.
@PeteW speaking as someone who has played a few shooters in VR but is unaware of many games that evoke these old light gun shooters, if anything like that exists could you recommend any please?
@Skyliner Crisis Brigade 2 is one that immediately springs to mind, it plays as if you're in Time Crisis as you physically crouch behind cover and then it moves you to the next area, oh and Aim Assault VR
I was really looking forward to giving this version of the game a try to see how closely Namco could replicate that old light gun feel and, fortunately, I agree with what's been written. The gyro may not be a perfect solution but it's damn good and, even better, now opens up a world of possibilities both for future re-releases or maybe even brand new games.
@carlos82 nice one mate, cheers!
I played a bit earlier and the beginning of the game is etched into my brain. I'm looking forward to playing more.
@Skyliner In just about every VR FPS you aim the sense controller which is designed like a light gun with a trigger.
But specific time crisis style games where you are on rails and can't move freely would be: Gazzlers, Pistol Whip, Dead Second, Crisis Brigade 2, Operation Wolf VR, Crossfire Sierra Squad, Switchback Dark Pictures and possibly Zombieland could qualify too.
There are many others but these are the ones I own.
@PeteW appreciate it, I'll check these out, thank you 😁
Imagine all 6 time crisis remaster in one disk collection, DAY ONE Purchase.
Looking forward to trying this out.
I used to really enjoy these games in the arcades and have had more than my share of light gun games and accesories over the years. It makes sense to use the gyro, and like others I hope this will herald a few more games of this type on the service.
Looking forward to trying this out soon.
EDIT: @Titntin Snap. lol
Would be nice to use PSVR2 controllers.
@janineking Haha, no support for any other light guns I'm afraid, especially not the Super Scope.
@Gamer83 They're not particularly amazing remakes, but the two House of the Dead games have gyro controls like this. Worth a look discounted.
The gyro is interesting, but when I tried it the drift was absolutely awful. It started fine, but I was pointing my controller to the left and twisting sideways to see the screen a few minutes in. The function to resync the controller looks like it was built for the light gun and doesn't seem to function with the DualSense. It's close, but it needs some improvements.
A PSVR2 version would be awesome, even if it ended up being a flatscreen game in the headset with the VR controllers working, but I don't see them investing those kind of resources in this.
@RobN I just tried the game, I was having to press triangle to resync once every 10 seconds. Then I realised the bullets would land slightly up-right of the aim cursor for some reason so I had to learn to shoot off target because small precise shots were missing otherwise. Really badly implemented this, deleted it 2 minutes later!
@R-Soub 6? There's more than 6 Time Crisis games, though, there's 8 main line games.
TC1, TC:PT, TC2, TC:CZ, TC3, TC4, TC:RS, TC5:ME.
There are 2 more iOS games, Time Crisis Strike and Time Crisis 2nd Strike, but they require very old Apple devices (32-bit) in order to play them.
@PeteW I own Crossfire Sierra Squad, and you do have to move around freely (which can trigger some motion sickness for me unfortunately), is there a secondary mode that plays like an arcade rail shooter?
@Chocoburger Sorry, I may have got that one wrong. Much like Zombieland, there is movement but I thought it was just walking to the next wave of enemies and once there you pretty much stay put.
