Square Enix Start Work On A Next-Gen Engine, Use Cloud Strife To Promote It

Perhaps You Might Get Final Fantasy VII After All.

Perhaps You Might Get Final Fantasy VII After All.

Square Enix has started work on a next-gen engine, and they’ve used an image of Cloud Strife to announce it. Take from that what you will. Check out Square Enix’s recruit page to see the promotion.

The company recruitment form reads:

“At Square Enix, in anticipation of the appearance of next generation platforms, we’ve started development on a new generation game engine for competing beyond the level of the strong developers throughout the world, and are presently seeking a lot of talent.”

Obviously, the image of Cloud Strife points to a much demanded remake of the popular Final Fantasy VII. How would you Playstation fans feel about an FFVII remake hitting the XBOX 360 though? It would just be wrong, right?

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg Chips In On The Playstation Move

"Bu-Bu-With Natal You Are The Controller."

"Bu-Bu-With Natal You Are The Controller."

Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg isn’t one to keep quiet in affairs relating to Sony and his own company. And so it was inevitable that he’d have something say about Move and Natal.

“Xbox 360 has a strong history of innovation: Halo, Xbox LIVE and instant-on 1080p HD,” Greenberg told TheBitBag.

“With each of these, we had our sights set on the future – and it paid off for us, the industry and Xbox 360 owners. We are doing it again with Project Natal on Xbox 360. We believe controller-free experiences are the future of gaming and entertainment.

“Only Project Natal makes YOU the controller, putting you in the middle of the action and in complete control. Jump and your Avatar jumps. Speak and characters respond. Combined with Xbox LIVE, Project Natal will transform how you connect with your friends, family and entertainment – as only Xbox 360 can do.”

But will controller-less gaming feel good Greenberg? And how are developers getting on with it? Apparently not so great, eh?

Rejoice: DiRT 3 Is In Development, Confirms Codemasters

DiRT 3 Is In Development At Codies. Hurrah!

DiRT 3 Is In Development At Codies. Hurrah!

Codemasters’ VP Gavin Cheshire has confirmed that DiRT 3 is absolutely in development at the studio.

Speaking with EDGE on the studio’s status as one of the last big publishers based in the UK, Gavin stated:

“Really, it’s all about letting the teams just innovate. There’s some great stuff coming from Birmingham that’s going into Dirt 3, and obviously you’ve seen Bodycount.

“I guess in today’s world, every day you’re dealing with people from all over the world. So it’s a British company and the last bastion of British publishing, and there is some pride in that, but it doesn’t take control of your life.

“It’s about the culture we’ve created and making the best games you can. Dirt 2: brilliant game but it’s all American accents, so maybe we’re a little over the top with those. Maybe we should fly the flag a bit more.”

We weren’t necessarily offended by the “USA-USA!” nature of DiRT 2, but we did love the driving mechanics of the game, so we absolutely look forward to a follow-up.

Kojima: Metal Gear Solid: Rising Will Bring In “New Users”

A New Type Of Metal Gear Solid Game Then? You Betcha.

A New Type Of Metal Gear Solid Game Then? You Betcha.

Hideo Kojima has suggested via Twitter that the new Metal Gear Solid: Rising game, being developed by a band of Kojima Productions upstarts, will bring new people to the franchise.

He posted:

“The next MGS… “RISING.” this game will create new users, be developed by the new generation, a new MGS.”

Very little is known about the game at this stage, aside from the fact that it will feature “Lightning Bolt Action” and star Metal Gear Solid 2’s Raiden.

Denny: Plenty More Playstation Move To Feature At E3, PSN Titles Will Take Advantage Of Move

Sony's Michael Denny Reckons GDC Was A Great Event For Move.

Sony's Michael Denny Reckons GDC Was A Great Event For Move.

Sony’s Michael Denny has condemned views that GDC is not a venue for announcing things. He told Eurogamer that he felt the event was the “right” place to go public with the Playstation Move.

“It’s just a very exciting time to show it off,” said the exec.

“The time felt right to announce something new at GDC. We’ve already released a lot of content this year, there’s a lot to come, we’ve got a lot of announcements to come at E3 as well.

“With it launching later in the year we thought it was important to explain to people where we’re going with it. The software’s in a good state to put in people’s hands.”

But Denny was keen to highlight that what we saw at GDC was not everything. According to the Sony man, there’ll be plenty more at E3:

“In terms of announcements [at E3] generally in relation to PlayStation platforms and particularly games that are coming later in the year, absolutely,” he said.

“Very exciting announcements, I’m sure.”

So there you have it, seems there’s plenty to look forward to.

In other news, Sony’s Scott Rhodes has told Joystiq that “Playstation Network is an integrated part of what we do,” hinting that Move games are likely to find a home on the PSN aswell as in retail packages.

Gran Turismo 5 Gets A Properly Stunning Trailer, We’re Excited All Over Again

After the bitter disappointment of Gran Turismo 5’s delay, it’s taken just one trailer to get our excitement levels rampant once again. This trailer is included on God Of War III in the US, and we had a lower-resolution post of it last week. But now you can enjoy it in lovely high quality.

Watch and weep.

GDC 10: Peter Molyneux Would “Love To” Work On Playstation Move

Molyneux Reckons Playstation Move Is Something He'd Like To Work On.

Molyneux Reckons Playstation Move Is Something He'd Love To Work On.

Peter Molyneux – head of Microsoft Game Studios Europe – has spoken to Eurogamer regarding the Playstation Move, describing it as “not as advanced” as Natal, but still something he’d “love to work on”.

Speaking in an interview as to whether he’d seen Playstation Move, Molyneux responded:

“We’re not really surprised, are we? I mean at E3 last year we saw they were having a wand, and that’s kind of what I expected. It looks like they’ve taken a step forward but it’s not as big a step as something like Natal, I don’t think. This is purely me talking personally, but I think maybe it’s slightly more a device for the core than it is for the casual market, because I think it’s quite precise.”As a designer it’s another one of those things I’d love to get my hands on and to play around with. As a consumer, everyone’s talking about motion control now – I mean, I’m starting to get confused. It’s kind of like the arms race, with the Wii MotionPlus and now the Sony Move and now I’m getting kind of confused.”

It’s interesting to hear Molyneux describe the device as “something for the core”. It definitely seems Sony are trying to position the device at the more “traditional” breed of gamers.
