I believe it's irrelevant if Sony thinks that this service is cost worthy or not it should be up to the individual consumer to make that judgment for themselves. We as gamers should have the freedom to decide if this service suits us or not, instead of Sony saying it's simply not worth it. I'd rather have the freedom to make what could possibly be a bad decision then not have the ability to make any decision at all.
With that being said IF a game company were to decide to hide multi player or any other features behind their own service's paywall we as gamers would have to make our voices heard and to let them know this is not something we want. If enough people decided to not buy their games because of the paywall their revenues would drop and they would more than likely reverse their decision.
