We’re in a golden era for retro-style arcade games, and UK studio Bitmap Bureau is one of the many devs leading the way.
Its upcoming effort, the mouthy He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, is being developed concurrently with the highly anticipated Terminator 2D: No Fate – two classic franchises from a bygone era.
This obviously isn’t the first He-Man game, but it may already have a claim on being the best one.

Those of a tender age may recall US Gold’s primitive 80s efforts on systems like the Commodore 64, but it’s the grainy Diablo-esque hack-‘n’-slasher He-Man: Power of Grayskull on the GBA that immediately springs to our mind. It was succeeded by the equally soulless He-Man: Defender of Grayskull on the PS2, which at least had great box art.

There’s few surprises in this all-new effort, which is being published by Limited Run Games, so expect a bumper physical edition to be announced at some point in the future.
Our demo – an early build hidden in one of the back halls of Gamescom – saw us assume the role of eponymous He-Man with the Captain of the Royal Guard Teela also available in two-player. It’ll be interesting to see how many selectable characters make it into the final build, with Man-At-Arms already announced and She-Ra strongly rumoured.
This is all based on the original 80s cartoon, licensed by Mattel, so you needn’t worry about the art aping those awful CG reboots. As has become Bitmap Bureau’s USP, this game looks like it could have stepped out of an arcade in the early 90s, although clearly it’s doing some things on a technical level that wouldn’t necessarily have been possible at the time.

There’s a lot of sprite scaling going on here, with enemies flying onto the stage from the foreground and being blasted into the screen, a la TMNT: Turtles in Time.
All of the character sprites are incredibly chunky too, with Battle Cat an obvious highlight in the opening cutscene. Sadly, we didn’t get a chance to control him during the demo, although judging by the screenshots that will be possible later in the game.
The combat mostly subscribes to the rules of Final Fight, but it uses more buttons than Capcom’s classic side-scrolling brawler. For example, you have light and heavy attacks across Square and Triangle respectively, as well as a block command on Circle.
As is the case in most belt games, combining button presses allows you to unleash a special attack, which uses up a segment of health. You can replenish this by eating various food items you find on the floor, such as apples et al.

However you also have a throw mechanic in this game which can triggered by pressing Cross/X and Circle at the same time, allowing you to effectively zone your enemies. Skeletor’s minions are sometimes armed with rifles and firearms, so this ability to attack enemies from afar does make sense – just keep in mind that, in the case of He-Man at least, he throws his sword, so you’re powerless until his blade returns to his hands.
The art direction is on point, with the first level taking place in and around the Royal Palace of Eternia. It absolutely looks like the location from the cartoon, with deep pink-ish-purple architecture. You’ll eventually battle against Trapjaw in the Throne Room, which will be a thrill for those familiar with the source material.
But even if you’re not really into He-Man, it’s clear there’s a high level of quality here; while it harbours few surprises, nice animations and use of hit-stun give your attacks impact and the screen gets suitably chaotic once it’s filled with foes.
Bitmap Bureau says the full game will feature 12 levels, and while we didn’t see much over the opening stage that surprised us, we played enough to know it’s going to deliver a quality beat-‘em-up.

With the team likely focused on Terminator 2D: No Fate until its launch on 31st October, we suspect there’ll be bigger announcements for He-Man to follow in 2026. But as huge fans of the genre and the source material, this is one that’s already muscled its way right to the top of our wishlist.

If you've got any questions about the game or the demo, just reply to me and I'll do my best to answer!
Absolutely love it, can't wait. Can't stress this enough though if you haven't played the openbor heman game yet download on your phone or PC asap, first class 👍
Looking to be a really good beat em up game. Rather your a fan of He Man or not.
"Just keep in mind that, in the case of He-Man at least, he throws his sword, so you’re powerless until his blade returns to his hands." - He Man should never be powerless, he is after all the most powerful man in the universe lol.
We really need the iconic transformation scene, complete with music, at the start of every level - it just wouldn't be the same without. Would be nice to have 1 or 2 extended "Into the Abyss" etc style transformations too.
@get2sammyb
2nd question (my comment above probably counts as a sort of question RE transformation scenes) - Does this run 120fps for compatible TVs?
None of the previous games appealed to me, but He Man does, so I dont have a point of reference.
@Rich33 The sword comes back pretty fast to be fair.
@Rich33 The demo I played was 60fps. Obviously it's a retro-style game so there may be a possibility they could run it 120fps, but it's probably too early for them to announce technical details like that.
This looks incredible and the pixel art style is much prefer with big chunky characters and details. As an 80's kid, I'm basically in dreamland with games like this and the upcoming Terminator 2 and Bitmap Bureau are quickly becoming one of my favourite studios. I think this project is been lead by Audie Sorlie of DF Retro fame and that Zelda CDi spiritual successor Arzette, so this is in very good hands
@Rich33 : yeah but the sword throwing is for long range attacks , not close combat . But either way , this game looks awesome !
It surprises me that we never got a He-man game in the late 80s early 90s along the vein of TMNT or The Simpsons.
I am looking forward to this and will be picking it up when its available.
@get2sammyb
Will definitely be keeping a close eye on this one - I just hope they do the original cartoon justice (and 120hz would be the icing on the cake).
@janineking
I was being a bit sarcastic - he could of course just punch the ground causing an earthquake if he didn't have his sword in hand.
@carlos82 Audi is the creative director, yes!
@Rich33 : yes , you're right about that
@Tasuki This absolutely feels like a game from that era of TMNT and The Simpsons, so you can almost treat it like a lost classic that never got released haha!
I love these 80's and 90's IPs getting these new retro style games. Hope we see more of it.
Graphics look decent, how were the sound effects? Did those help make you feel like you were in one of the classic cartoon episodes?
Not a fan of He-Man but I'm loving the Golden Axe vibes from the gameplay. I'll probably buy it solely based on that.
This game just looks fun as hell. And those big sprites and bright, pretty colors.
Love the blatant "inspiration" from Golden Axe! Really hoping to see She Ra make an appearance as well
By the power of Grayskull.
Blimey I'm old.
@LieutenantFatman Was hard to properly hear it on a busy show floor (no headphones) so I wouldn't want to speak too much about the sound just yet.
Hopefully it's great though. I agree it adds so much to the combat.
That trailer was just brilliant 👍
Great to have a button for some kind of defence. One my biggest gripes with SoR4 was not having any dedicated block/parry/dash/dodge button.
But I hate the idea of using you health for special moves, I hated it in SoR4 and already dislike it Here.
I wish someone would make a cool original game with 80s characters instead of these beat em ups. There's good reason why this genre was dead for 30 years
Looking good so far and on my buying list. This could fill my hunger for a new 2D Golden Axe.
@Elock "I wish someone would make a cool original game with 80s characters instead of these beat em ups"
I don't know what type of "original game" that you think could be perfectly fit for He-Man. But there's non-beat em up games with 80's characters that you can play right now:
"There's good reason why this genre was dead for 30 years"
I hate to say this to you but the beat em up genre never die and it still alive and kicking, especially for the last 5 years 😎
The beat em up fans are eating good with SoR 4, TMNT Shredder Revenge, MMPR Rita's Rewind, Rival City Girls, Double Dragon Gaiden, Scott Pilgrim etc. The future for the genre looks really bright with this game, Marvel Cosmic, Double Dragon Revive, Scott Pilgrim EX, new SoR, new Golden Axe, Toxic Crusaders etc.
Great preview Sammy and awesome work from Gamescom.
I really hope we can play as the villains too, even if you have to unlock them. Like come on let play as Skeletor and Hodak.
@Puppetmaster I haven't really been a big beat em up fan after the Mega Drive era but these recent games using IPs I've grown up with fit so well that I can't help but just get a bit excited about them.
@get2sammyb Any hints of a She-Ra dlc?
@Rich33
From what I’ve heard the music from the Filmation series has rights issues and couldn’t be used. Happy to be proven wrong though.
I’m really excited for this, it looks so good. I grew up with He-man and absolutely loved it. I know my Castle Greyskull is still somewhere in my parents garage just waiting to remerge someday.
@MysteryCupofJoe I didn’t see anything in the demo personally but I’ve seen on social media people may have spotted She-Ra in the trailer or a screenshot or something.
@get2sammyb the real question here is did you repeatedly ask them to make a Thundercats game?
Pretty sure those aren't the original figures in the nostalgia bait intro scene. I had them, and they had this weird ball joint connection for the limbs that were held in with black elastic. You could pull them apart disturbingly and they'd snap back to normal again, lol.
Physical release please! This looks awesome! Would love to see a 3D adventure MOTO game on Switch.
Brings back memories of childhood! How about doing Thundercats next? And a decent GIJoe game.
@Fandabidozi2025
I really hope your wrong too (in a nice way).
That music was so iconic and integral to every episode.
A year or so ago I happened upon a youtube video which dubbed the old school transformation music on top of a transformation scene from a new He-man cartoon, and it just made the scene feel so right.
@AdamNovice You should try Streets of Rage 4: it’s the GOAT beat’m up, a perfect marriage between the good from the classics and the improvements of current games gen.
@Klart I've been meaning too, curse of the backlog and all that.
@PuppetMaster Transformers Galactic Trials 🤮
@Matroska 100% accurate 😁
@AdamNovice You need to play Streets of Rage 4! It's ace!!!
@Elock If you get into the Sega Dreamcast, there are a ton of homebrew beat ‘em up games based on Streets of Rage…they use the Beats of Rage engine, and you can find, download and play beat ‘em up games using characters from Marvel, the Simpsons, King of Fighters, Sonic, Final Fight, and Street Fighter, just to name a few. Granted, the games are all fairly similar because they use the same engine, but it’s definitely cool to play a “new” beat ‘em up game you’ve never seen before using characters you know and love. Anyway, it’s one of the reasons why the Dreamcast is so cool.
As for this He-Man game, neat-o. I just hope they keep the price nice—at, like, $19.99 or so…max of $24.99. If they decide to charge, say, $39.99 or more, even the biggest, most diehard beat ‘em up retro game fans will save their money. Yep, they’ll just wait six months or more for the price to drop, and the He-Man game’s initial sales will fly as high as a mercury-filled lead balloon being held in place by, as Queensryche’s “Empire” intro so eloquently said, a “two-ton heavy thing.”
@AdamNovice Yeah after Sega Mega Drive / SNES era, beat em up genre took a slump because the transition from 2D to 3D and Arcade scene was slowly gone from many countries. We got mediocre titles like Fighting Force, The Bouncer, and Final Fight: Streetwise but we also got some gem like God Hand, SpikeOut, and Viewtiful Joe. So i can understand why you're not a fan of beat em up games after Mega Drive era.
But i think back in PS3 era, beat em up genre slowly recover and in PS4 era we finally got games like Streets of Rage 4, Shredders Revenge, etc that put beat em up in top shape again.
@Killionaire Well the guy dislike beat em up genre so i suggested some non-beat em up titles that he could try. I don't know if Galactic Trials is a bad game though...
@PuppetMaster it's very bad, the worst. He asked for a cool game. It's far from a cool game. It's the opposite!
@Killionaire Okay you think the game is bad which is fair. But the guy also asked "original game" which i don't know what type of this "cool original game" he wants and fits with He-Man universe. Is it completely experimental / new genre that never exist in the market? If yes then how's that fits with He-Man?
@get2sammyb Is this 1-2 players only or is there a 4 player option, even though it said there are 4 characters to choose from? Does Adam become He-man in the iconic transformation scene or is he always He-man?
@PushButtons He transforms at the start of Level 1. The demo seemed like it was 2-player only, although not sure whether that will change in the full release.
Banger done right to the tea.
@get2sammyb Very true. I am really looking forward to this game.
