I didn’t play the original Dead of Darkness, but its successor – in development for PS5 and PS4 – has caught my eye.

This game looks a lot like Resident Evil if it had been scaled back for the Super Nintendo, and while dev Retrofiction Games is clearly doing things here that wouldn’t be possible on 16-bit machines, I love how it captures that vibe.

This debut trailer – first aired during Horror Game Awards Halloween Showcase earlier today – starts out with a propaganda video about Goldren Creek, a retreat that seemingly promises visitors an idyllic future.

It then quickly transitions into the horrors of today, where human experiments have clearly gone awry. Complementing the SNES-style presentation are 90s-inspired anime cutscenes.

The full game – which doesn’t have a release date – will apparently feature character switching, which will be required to solve puzzles. You’ll be able to share and store resources via item boxes, just like in Resident Evil.

There’ll be a bunch of different weapons, but resources will be scarce, so don’t waste your ammo.

You’ll also find secret documents, clues, and various other lore-building items around the world.

As an aside, if you want to test out the original Dead of Darkness, it’s on sale on the PS Store right now for $9.59/£6.49. I might give it a look while I wait for this.
