Street Fighter Movie Cracks Over $50M at Box Office in Opening Weekend 1

There had been some concern over whether audiences would show up for the new live action Street Fighter movie, but it managed to top the worldwide box office this weekend with a $51.1 million international haul.

While optimists had been hoping for a number closer to $70 million, unless ticket sales fall off a cliff over the coming weeks, this is a decent result for the film, which was made on an $82 million budget, according to Deadline.

While it’s still got a long road to profitability ahead of it – especially with its marketing costs included – it’s looking like it should just about eke out a win for all involved.

For those who don’t know, Paramount is distributing this movie, while Legendary and Capcom co-funded it.

Reviews were mixed, but audiences have generally responded more positively to the film so far. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 42% rating from critics – but a much more enthusiastic 79% from movie goers.

I had my fair share of issues with the flick, which is intentionally garish and leans heavily into juvenile humour, but I enjoyed it overall.

“Despite all these obvious criticisms, the movie is fun and it captures the wide-eyed, kaleidoscope craziness of Street Fighter at large,” I wrote in my review. “It’s all six-packs, sweat, and spit.”
