Games set in the Star Wars universe are on a roll right now, with recent releases Zero Company and Galactic Racer both launching to critical acclaim.

Neither focusing on Jedi or the traditional action-adventure experience, they are a good representation of recent quotes from Lucasfilm executive Douglas Reilly. The vice president of the company shared (via The Game Business) Lucasfilm has expanded the sort of developers it'll listen to and accept pitches from that want to make Star Wars games.

"You don’t have to necessarily be a top five publisher to make a great Star Wars game. We have a high-quality bar, and we want to make sure there are excellent experiences, and that means typically you work with more experienced teams than, you know, new teams who have no track record of making great things," Reilly said.

He continued by explaining Lucasfilm is working with "large and small" partners that are going to "surprise" players once the collaborations are announced.

A few future Star Wars projects are already revealed, like a third Star Wars Jedi entry from Respawn Entertainment and Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic from a new studio set up by Casey Hudson. There's also Star Wars Eclipse and the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake, but these projects have been in development for so long that I doubt Lucasfilm counts them as part of this initiative.

A late August 2026 release, tactical title Star Wars Zero Company largely came from Bit Reactor. With XCOM 2 pedigree backing it, Zero Company was the developer's first project. The same can be said of Star Wars: Galactic Racer, which was the debut effort from Fuse Games, but it's got lead Burnout and Need for Speed developers backing it.

Both releases have performed incredibly well, so if these are the types of games Lucasfilm is planning to invest in alongside the bigger action-adventure and RPG instalments, then Star Wars games probably have a brighter future than the films right about now.
