GTA 6 X Button

Most of the games Rockstar creates are considered masterpieces, but if there are any criticisms, it's not long before the controls are brought up.

The most notorious example is the demand to constantly press the X button to sprint.

As most games nowadays map sprint inputs to a press of the L3 button, it's become a bit of a unique quirk of Rockstar titles, with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continuing to map the function to X despite the industry-wide move to the thumbstick.

It looks like Rockstar has finally gotten with the times, though, as a recent GTA 6 preview video claims pressing L3 is the new default for sprinting as Jason or Lucia.

YouTuber MikeShowSha was invited to see the PS5 game being played ahead of the Extended Look from last week and reported in a Q&A video that L3 was the default input for sprinting.

From those who attended Rockstar preview sessions, a lot of the conversation has centred around the developer wanting to give you lots of options and ways to customise the experience. There's been mention of different run speeds, and because of this, I'd expect there will be a toggle in the settings if you really want to change it back to the X button.

GTA 6 releases for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19th November 2026. Do you welcome this change, or have you secretly always loved mashing that X button? Let us know in the comments below.
