I have never played a Witcher game, yes I know, I know, boo me.

However, would it be wise for me to play the others prior to this release, or just jump on the love train once this is out?

I’m just not sure if the story actually matters all that much, historically that is.

Anyway, if anyone could suggest whether they think it matters or not, let me know. I would search it on the net, but then search engines tend to be about as much use as a wax banana nowadays.

2028 works great for me, assuming the game is actually done.

The Witcher 3 is the greatest game ever made, so there's a lot of pressure to get 4 right. If they need to delay out of 2028 to make sure it doesn't launch like 3 or 2077 did, then by all means, delay.

It will sell nothing on playstation because it will have no disk. Right? Right?
We shall see...

@ButteredCrumpet I don’t think 1 and 2 are even on PlayStation, so you’ll need to look elsewhere for those. 3 is alright, but the combat is genuinely bad. Chop chop jumping chop, chop chop jumping chop etc etc etc.

@ButteredCrumpet Start with The Witcher 3 if you can. That's where most of us did. Especially with the new expansion coming out, I bet it will be a perfect place to start. I'm certainly biased, since I hold 3 in such high regard.

If playing Witcher 3 is too big an ask, then 4 would be an ok place to start, I imagine. It's a new protagonist.

All the original novels and short stories are treated like backstory to the characters.

Also, ignore everyone saying the combat is bad. It probably just has a different rhythm than people expect. It's very flourishy melee combat, so you need to strafe/circle around opponents and slow down the button mashing. In the books, Geralt is described like he's almost dancing when he fights, so in that sense, the game is pretty faithful.

Well that sucks, 2027 would have been great, but no disc, no buy

@Fyz306903 The Witcher 1 Remake is probably further away than Witcher 4. The studio doing the Songs of the Past expansion are handling it and it won't go into full production until they have finished that.

Getting the DLC in 2027 definitely softens this blow. Can't believe we're getting new Witcher games in 27, 28 and possibly the remakes in 29. Not bad at all

A long way to go, and who knows what the console market will be like then in 2028.
Obviously it will be a cross generation release if new consoles are out by then.

Oh CDPR, we know your tricks. 2028 release turns into 2029, but it's 2030 before game-breaking bugs are worked out, and it's not worth buying until expansions go on sale in 2032 or so. I'll hit up GOG around then, I guess, assuming I have a PC that can run it.

@ButteredCrumpet I tried playing the Witcher III back when I had my PS4 and I hated every second of it lol. It's clunky AF, the combat is something you would see from a 2003 shovelware game and I couldn't stand the edgelord personality of our MC. Just like every single CDPR game, it's overhyped to oblivion and I'm sick and tired of being forced to like their games 🤢

I'm hyped but also a little apprehensive about the move from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5. UE5 doesn't do character models very well, in my opinion.

Having just played through all of Witcher 3 for the first time couple of months ago and with an expansion coming out next year, I think I'm fine with waiting for a bit!

Guess I'll only be able to have Witcher 1-3 on my shelf.

@ButteredCrumpet you're getting all the polarising views. I've been gaming since the 90s, RPG's and open world games were always my favourite, and Witcher 3 stands a titan amongst them.

It's got a fantastic story, some of the best side quest writing of any game out there. A superb soundtrack. Choices that matter, but where consequences aren't often obvious (it's not a simple 'good' and 'bad' choice system), and honestly the combat is fun.

Combat you're having to dodge a lot, but you also need to prepare for each fight. Select the right potions, poisons and then use a range of magic for the specific creature, and the enemy variety is significant. It's a bit spammy, enemies soak up damage, and it is clunky at parts, but it's a masterpiece.

If you go into W4 blind you'll miss out on who the protag is, and what she means to everyone. And you'll be missing out on a fantastic older game (with a great current-gen patch)

Does anyone know what happened to the reworking of witchers 1 & 2? I thought a few years ago it was stated we would see those games rebuilt.

@KingPev I didn't mean it LITERALLY. But the hivemind and circlejerk over their painfully average games is disturbing. I tried going in with an open mind and had the most underwhelming crap experience ever. But god forbid someone criticized the Witcher or Cyberpunk!!!1!

As for the Witcher 4, I have faith it'll be good. They stumbled with Cyberpubk but that eventually became a fantastic game and I can't see them making the same mistake again.

Dont worry, apparently people commenting about discs are an insignificant minority, so it shouldnt be much of a problem.

2028 means I'll wait for a switch 2 release, or a new pc (post rampocalypse). That means plenty of time for the price to drop and CDPR to fix the possibly broken release.

@ButteredCrumpet CDPR is all about story. Tons and tons of funny comments and in game cutscenes/ dialogue. The combat takes a minute to get used to but it’s still good. Gwent I agree very addictive and once you know that some cards can like take back other ones , it becomes oh that’s how I beat that opponent 😊. One of the best action rpg’s ever

@Divergent95 ......tbh I think a lot of players appreciate the games for the story, the quests and the overall cinematic aesthetic to them. And yes, the W3 combat is clunky but Cyberpunk 2077 is fantastic with the right build

@ButteredCrumpet I’ve finished all 3 of them (been a Witcher fan pretty much as soon as possible if you only speak English getting the game at release and then the first book immediately after) and you are good to start with the 3rd game. World and quests are all great and I don’t have an issue with the combat but can see why people would.

The first one is set after the books finish and Gerald has amnesia throughout it so that it’s easier for non book readers to follow along. The story is good but largely disconnected from other 2. The second game is also pretty standalone (it’s based on some stuff set up in the post credits teaser of the first game) and is all about an assassin going around murdering kings. That gets wrapped up then similarly there is a post credits scene of the empire in the south invading their much smaller neighbours and that’s the set up for 3.

I am very much looking forward to the remake of one as going back to the first game is rough. It’s got an absolutely incomprehensible combat system (well at first) based on clicking left/right at specific moments in the animations. Story and atmosphere are great though so modernising the gameplay will help. Witcher 2 is like a rough draft for 3 just with much smaller areas, they interestingly had a choice at the end of act 1 where you had to side with one of two factions and you got completely different act 2s based on that. They were really ambitious with it but had to cut a bunch of stuff when they started running out of time and money so hopefully if we get a remake of 2 some of the cut content comes back.

It made sense from the moment they announced the last Witcher 3 DLC. It most probably will be used as a transition to next saga too.
