PS5 RPG Dawnwalker Actually Will Have 60FPS Mode, Part of Day One Patch

Phew, now I can sleep again after my preorder.

Good on the Developers for taking that feedback onboard and making it work. Hopefully people will exercise the fine art of forgive and forget, it sounds like they worked hard to fix it.

60fps is great and all, but I find it fascinating that it's being used as a make or break deal nowadays.

There has never been an era of 3D gaming beforehand where 60fps was the standard. The PS2 era was closest, but even then, the split between 60fps and 30fps is about 50-50

I find it fascinating because you hear people moan all the time that games aren't taking advantage of the PS5's capabilities. Yet a lot of these people also moan when you have games run at 30fps. I'm not saying that any of these people are wrong, but it is something to think about.

Personally, I don't really mind what the framerate is. I play PAL N64 games a bunch, Perfect Darlk is one of my favourite games of all time. If I can accept that game's framerate, I can play a game at 30fps.

Hmmm, knee jerk reaction to the number of cancelled pre-orders and de-wishlists after the previous announcement methinks.

Plus another example of 'Day One' patching, why wasn't this included in the GOLD version I don't know but again we have an example of an incomplete disc version of a game. I was looking at this one but now again I'm going to wait for the inevitable umpteen patches before picking it up half price next year.

The question is can it hold a 60fps though?

Good for them! They should have just mentioned one was in testing and people would have been fine with that, hopefully it works and the game is good on launch, but the game has went from a Day 1 to wait and see how it reviews before deciding, just too many games releasing in Sept and Oct so money has to be spent wisely!

Thank goodness! Game looks great, planning to pick this up at some point!

@ShadowRJ I hear you. I’m not a forensic gamer either. That being said, I won’t buy 30fps games really anymore. It’s 2026 and for the price, to play sluggish 30, just not willing to do it. But that’s just me.
I’d rather games be smaller in scope and run well than be huge and not.

@x3King84 To be honest, it's hard to even find a PS5 that doesn't have a 60fps mode. The only PS5 game I played at 30fps was Plague Tale Requiem, and that one had a 60fps mode patch later on.

I guess it's always good to have this but I'm ngl - I play RPG-adjacent games (and even some action games if they're not too fast) in 40fps modes and it's fine to me. Maybe I'm old
The caveat is of course that you need a 120Hz screen for these to work correctly but I think those are fairly common now.

@ShadowRJ personally I don't like 30fps. Some games like Gotham knights look really smooth running in 30fps but the majority of games just look jerky to me. I'm pretty spoilt since I upgraded to the ps5 Pro because a lot of the time the performance mode is pretty much what quality mode was on the base ps5 except 60fps and that is pretty much the mode I play. When I look back at the games I used to play on the og xbox,ps2,360 I sometimes wonder how I never had a seizure.

@ShadowRJ people standards have changed now, they want more 60 FPS than 30.

@ShadowRJ I think it is because we have reached a point of diminishing returns when it comes to graphics resolution in gaming. Generations used to have pretty sizable jumps in quality for resolution and model detail but now gamers are noticing the latest jump is so much smaller. Add in the fact that a lot of games now have an option to play at 60fps at a lower resolution, it becomes apparent that the difference between 4k resolution and something like 1440 are so small it is unnoticeable unless you are examining the image in depth while the difference between 30fps and 60 is immediately apparent upon playing. It almost feels like when a game focuses on resolution and graphics over performance it is because the developers are getting a little self indulgent in the name of art while forgetting they are making a game. When they are spending time modeling the individual hairs all over a random npc’s body that is just being self absorbed at that point

We’ve heard this before and received fake 60fps modes.

If it drops below the VRR window causing stutter or tearing, it’s not a 60fps mode.

Also 640p like FF16 is also not a legitimate 60fps mode.

@Kz_Eikon They certainly have. I remember the PS3 games where a stable 30fps was a luxury.

Yeah this wasn't based on feedback ur not creating a whole new graphics mode in this short amount of time this was already in the works

@ShadowRJ you don't need high fps when it's 2D. Furthermore if you play 60 fps and then 30 fps then you'd see the difference. It also depends on the hz of your tv, if you play on an old tv then you wouldn't feel it

@Tsushima I haven't pre ordered but this is the way I approach new games these days. I genuinely want to support the devs that make the kind of games I enjoy, especially new ones. In the age of sequels and remakes , new stories and new gameplay ideas need to be rewarded. Rebel Wolves willingness to change course based on feedback , I think, is a good sign.

I need gameplay footage of it running 60fps.

@Dai_e_vai Surely it's the opposite, mo? Almost every single 2D game that I know plays in 60fps, because more often than not, those game need percise control.

The only exceptions I can think of are Puppeteer and the LittleBigPlanet games.

@dwayne91 Im backing them like I did Pearl Abyss. I got alot of hours out of Crimson Desert. I think sometimes its best to support a new dev instead of a 60fps bandwagon

@ShadowRJ the problem many people have is that LED tvs are lesser than CRT tvs from prior generations. Unless someone has a good OLED with a good processor to compensate and smooth out motion. Lower frame rates are more noticeable. The vast majority of people won’t care as long as the game is playable. But I’m with you. I’m not about to dismiss a game because it isn’t 30 fps. I can deal with 30 fps for a console RPG. I did with the Witcher 3 on Xbox one.

Well, one of the "downgrades" that came with digital era was the fact that 30fps became nearly unplayable due to issues related to the constant 60hz output of LCD screens.

On old CRT screens you barely felt when your frame dipped bellow 30fps, which happened very often on most games, because scanline worked as a natural v-sync and the bloom from those TVs worked as a natural motion blur.

Games were also made around that knowledge, GTA trilogy would use dithering masks on LOD models as they were loading knowing it would smooth the pop-in transition. Pixel art was also made around that tech.

All in all, I don't mind 30fps games as long its stable and constant.

@ShadowRJ agree. Stable framerate has always been a bigger deal to me, I'll take 30fps solid with fantastic graphics over an uneven 60fps

There is no excuse for the Pro to not have 60 fps. If a game since Resident Evil 9's PSSR 2 upgrade doesn't come out with a 60 fps mode with PSSR then it's a no buy for me.

Remember, TARGETING is not the same as locked.
Gonna be interesting to see how close OG PS5 and Series X can get to 60fps.
Pro have a better chance, unless the game is CPU heavy. As long as it don't drops below 48fps, VRR can come to the rescue.
Just keep your expectations in check.

@Hoff fps, PSSR2... how about whether or not the game is actually fun to play? Or do you care more about tech specs than playing?

I'm probably going to be playing this at 40FPS, which I find is a really nice middle ground for my eyes, but I'm really happy they're including a 60FPS mode. Plenty of gamers have its absence as a deal breaker.

60fps is nice but it's not as essential as some of you make it seem. No wonder it hasn't been devs' priority in the past. Your eyes usually adjusts. The only one time 30fps looks bad in my experience is BG3.

@DennisReynolds that is exactly my question and maybe this is what the developers were still testing at the time.

I feel like most games performance modes are really bad now this late in the generation unless you're on pro. Standard ps5 performance modes all have terrible resolution

Like I don't play anymore N64 games because playing those games at 22 / 24 fps is simply not acceptable on 2026...

@Boxmonkey It's certainly one of them, but bear in mind that's only one way to show off its technical ability.

I think the people who keep on saying that they're waiting for the generation to start mean they want to see graphics that go beyond the PS4. They want to see games which put The Last of Us Part 2 to shame, the same way that The Last of Us Part 2 put the first game's graphical fidelity to shame.

Already preordered a physical

This is one of those things that’s hard to go back from once you’ve experienced it. The first game I’d chosen frames over resolution was Horizon: Zero Dawn. After experiencing that, I couldn’t go back. However, if 60 isn’t an option. I can play at 30.

I recently played Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen after completing Dragon’s Dogma 2. It was jarring as soon as Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen started and wasn’t at 60. I got through it but it just didn’t feel right.

@ShadowRJ Yes, there was no 3D era with 60 fps and fast loading as the de facto standard. And now it is there, and I don’t want to go back.

PS5 delivers the snappy gaming experience I remember from back then playing on my SNES. Why should we accept less nowadays?

@Slayer25c I'm not sure if you are being sincere or not. I had zero issues with Gotham knights. I enjoyed the game a fair bit and I always felt the hate it recieved was a bit on the unfair side. It wasn't perfect and I think it suffered the salty wrath of gamers that felt they were owed another Arkham Knight. Looking back on it I think the 3 rocksteady batman games were always going to be very tough to improve upon.

@Northern_munkey I'm being serious I had no issues playing in 30 fps I remember everyone crying over it being 30fps I enjoy the game me and my friend did everything we enjoyed it every moment of it all the jokes about Nightwing butt and etc

Nice news but I find if you start in 30 or 40fps you get used to it, it's the jumping around that's jarring - if it's a stable 40fps that sounds perfect.

Just holding out for reviews - still concerned a big open world game that reacts to decisions may have major technical issues at launch. But if the rest is good, I think this'll be my new game purchase of the year

@ShadowRJ yes, but ps2 was still being playing on 30hz crt tvs. Now we have 120+ hz tvs where 30fps looks and performs terribly. The fact that they missed 60hz from the jump was plainly an error. Any dev should expect that kind of backlash in 2026

@Slayer25c it's not always easy to determine sincerity if you can't hear the person actually talking. Some devs nail the 30fps and then some don't for example from software. Bloodbornes fps was shocking and it's criminal it's never been addressed on the ps5.

Triple A titles in this late PS5 generation, need to have a 60fps mode. They sold this as a 4k / 60 fps box from launch.

@SteveBTW they said they didn't want to officially announce it will it was official it would be ready for launch it would be pretty silly to announce 60 fps mode , and then its not ready day one.

@ShadowRJ To my mind, a 60fps mode effectively becoming a standard is the graphical advancement of this console generation. Fidelity/detail has reached the point where it requires exponentially increasing computation power for diminishing returns. This generation has been giving us late gen PS4 levels of detail at higher resolution and 60fps, which is fine by me. Doubling the framerate at the same level of detail is no small feat and people who complain about there not being a big enough graphical leap this generation are just too technologically ignorant to understand that.

60fps not on disc, no buy. Better cook up an excuse for an updated edition, devs.
