PlayStation Physical Games Push Square

Sony hasn't officially said it, but we now practically know the PS6 won't ship with a disc drive, as the firm has decided to stop supporting disc-based physical games entirely from 2028.

It looks like it won't be the only company taking this route, though, as Windows Central sources claim Microsoft shall be doing the same with Project Helix: the next Xbox console won't have a disc drive either.

This would render both next-gen systems as digital-only boxes, with any sort of physical support coming from a disc drive add-on, like what Sony has provided the more recent base PS5 and PS5 Pro models with. This could be used to offer disc-based backwards compatibility for discs.

Since the PS6 hasn't been officially unveiled yet, Sony has offered next to no information covering any programs it may offer to translate your disc-based physical copies into a digital edition. According to The Verge, such an incentive is in the works for Project Helix, and will be provided for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S discs. It will be interesting to see if Sony follows suit.

As the first to pull the trigger on such a controversial move, Sony is catching all the flak (and rightfully so) for the decision to scrap physical media — that is, unless you really like digital games delivered to you via a paper pamphlet in a plastic box. PS6 and PS5 titles will be available from the PS Store or via codes in physical boxes from January 2028, but nothing launching between now and then is impacted.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet might be the last-ever first-party PlayStation release to be shipped on a disc.
