Easily one of the most lucrative markets in gaming right now, the realm of free-to-play RPGs is a tough nut to crack if you're a newcomer — but a brand as recognisable as Marvel should have a much easier time of it.
According to a barrage of recent leaks, most of which have ended up being shared by @multiversusie on X, Marvel is cooking up a gacha-based action RPG featuring a wide range of playable heroes and villains.
Said leaks are so abundant that it's difficult to deny their legitimacy. This thing, currently code-named 'Project Comet', is almost certainly in development.
The aforementioned account claims that the game is being made by Scopely, which is a "mobile-first" company with offices all over the world.
However, Project Comet's art team apparently shares talent with Marvel Rivals — and so many of the character designs appear to have a similar, stylish edge to them. For what it's worth, I think the leaks look pretty great.
So, the goal here is to definitely try and muscle in on the big gacha market, which is currently dominated by titles like Genshin Impact and Wuthering Waves.
These massive live service offerings are being updated on a near constant basis, and at this point, they're primarily competing for your time. Project Comet will have to nail the execution if it wants to measure up.
Right now, the game's only been leaked for mobile — but if it's anything like the titles I just mentioned, Marvel will want to get it on as many platforms as possible, including consoles.
Do you think this Project Comet has the potential to upset what is an already packed market? Roll for your favourite characters in the comments section below.

Not sure if there could be a less appealing combination for a game for me personally
Sounds awesome to me. The only reason I haven't tried Marvel Rivals is that it's a shooter in essence. But an RPG? Count me in!
free to play rpg? thats a nope for me
Between Genshin, Wuwa, NTE, ZZZ, Honkai and the upcoming Ananta, it's gonna be though. It all depends on the gacha system and the available characters and storyline on launch. Take NTE for example, that second chapter with Taygedo was sooooo bad they gave you the option to mute the guy because he was so annoying. Plus the story was just bad. Thankfully the chapters afterwards picked up the pace but still. Then there's certainly a gacha fatigue setting in for many. There's only so many gachas you can support considering how expensive the pulls can get. Plus theres many non Action RPG gachas aswell. It'll be interesting to see how marvel'll fare. Before the Rivals launch I was sure it was gonna fail, but that seems to not be the case. As always time will tell.
I'm interested... But I already play too many of these.
Wouldn't it just be easier to add a story mode to Rivals since it's already out there and seemingly doing well?
FF14 still seems to be an ongoing entity judging by its coming to Switch 2 so I suppose Marvel of all people could pull off something similar.
I've currently burnt myself out on gacha playing Infinity Nikki, NTE and 7 Deadly Sins all at the same time when really nothing is going on in any of them. I'm so bored I borrowed Neir Automata Yorha edition from the library just to play a complete game. I'd probably enjoy it more if I hadn't played the remake version Stellar Blade. They're basically the same game.🤪
Hmm, sounds like a swing lined up for a miss.
The longevity of these games comes from always expanding the roster, keeping players coming back to roll for a new, exciting character. This works because they play to it; there's always room to expand and bring in new designs, gameplay styles etc based on what the playerbase are hankering for, and the games generally existing in their own IPs gives them plenty of freedom but also plenty of surprise.
A Marvel take would be hamstrung on many of those fronts from the start. It would be Marvel, so it's going to inevitably need to launch with a pretty solid roster of well-known characters or be met with grumbles. But it then also has a ticking clock of big-ticket heroes that it will eventually run out of. People will want iconic Marvel characters - not B-tier characters, and definitely not new 'made for the game' ones - and that means they can't just keep going like 'evergreen' gachas such as Genshin, Nikke, etc. They'd almost certainly end up like Final Fantasy Brave Exvius instead - shuttered after 4 or so years after the well dries up. Or, worse, like one of the many that didn't even last that long.
God help us all
I desperately want this game to be bad because my bank account will be in danger.
More anime crap.. hard pass
Sounds interesting but like many I don't have time to fit in a new live service game, too much of a timesink. Pesonally I'm a bit burnt out on Marvel too.
@crossbit I don't see it really being an issue. If you look at something like Genshin Impact - probably the gold standard in terms of player retention six years later - they started with around 15-20 characters and have expanded to around 115, and that's with a new character usually every 3 weeks, though occasionally this is every 6 weeks, most games won't be updated that fast. Marvel has more than enough big characters to keep fans engaged, have character reruns etc.
And even if they didn't, they can do what a lot of these gacha's do and have the same character in a different guise e.g. Iron man, Iron Legion, Iron Man Mk X etc.
I think i need say no more lol
I think there’s a market. If you like the idea of a gacha game but don’t like the anime style then there’s an opening.
Yeah, this games real. I got an email from Scopely over a month ago to see if I was interested in alpha/beta testing it but had no interest since it’s a mobile game and Scopely’s games are resource heavy and time gated so that you pay to play.
I used to play Star Wars: Galaxy for Heroes, which was made by Scopely. When I say played, I did so every single day for at least 2 hours for most of that I ran a Guild, and then joined another Guild as an Officer. I might be tempted by a Marvel equivalent, but it is a real time-sink...
