Bethesda is finally putting out a native PS5 version of Fallout 76, but before it does, the publisher would love for you to run some public tests on it. Anyone who already owns the game will be able to download a free PS5 "test version" of it later this month, with a view to launching the final version "later this summer".
In a blog post, Bethesda reveals the following features will be included in the PS5 version:
- 60 frames-per-second target on base PS5 and PS5 Pro
- 4K resolution on PS5 Pro / 1440p resolution on base PS5
- VRR support on base PS5 and PS5 Pro
- Improved draw distances
- Improved shadows
It is rare to see a developer call on its community to test something like an upgraded PS5 version, but this does at least mean the current playerbase can get its hands on the current-gen edition sooner. The flipside is that if any major issues are discovered, then there won't really be any acceptable excuse if they make it into the final version.
This testing period will allow Bethesda to have those problems flagged and sorted for the final PS5 release build.
Obviously, the revival Fallout 76 has undergone in the past couple of years has been transformational, making it one of the best live service games out there. Finally, a native PS5 version gives it better frame rates and visuals, though it's somewhat surprising the base PS5 can't achieve a 4K resolution — that's only on PS5 Pro in regards to PlayStation hardware.
Will you be testing Fallout 76 on PS5 this month? Let us know in the comments below.

Uh oh, it took me 251 hours to 100% it on PS4, please tell me I'm not going to put myself through that again?
That being said the community in there is one of the best I've been a part of so maybe I will.
Hasn't the general public been testing games for most companies for like 5+ years now already?
@Anke Best community out there, are you serious? In my experience it’s nothing but lazy, do-nothing randoms camping inaccessible points during public events waiting for other people to do the work so they can collect loot/XP.
I like fallout 76 played through the whole game solo it has one of the best maps they have made and will happily playthrough it again to get the ps5 platinum.
one of those games that people love to pile on but i really enjoyed it better than fallout 4 I think
@Balaam_ well that definitely wasn't my experience, yes I came across the odd person doing nothing in events but it was rare. I lost count of the amount of players that would gift me things during the first 50 levels.
At this point I wouldn't trust Bethesda to water my plants.
I might give it a try, I tried going back to 76 on my PS5 as a solo player a while back but quickly got turned off by that PS4-version nuisance of updates being a huge storage hog. A PS5 native version that can download a 60MB hotfix without needed a full 120GB or so of storage available would make it much easier to hold on to and dip into every now and then.
Not gonna lie, I had a good time with this game a year or two ago, clocked in 400+ hours. Might go back to see what new story quest they've added.
Didn't Sony remove slop ware recently? Why are Bethesda games still on the store?
No. Use your QAs to do this. That's why you pay them, right? We all know how awesome a job they've done on every release since Fallout 3. No bugs to be seen here, fam.
Wait....
Hahahaha, Bethesdahahaha!
Excellent Idea.
Submit our names to Bethesda, so that they can then PAY us for playtesting their unfinished games.
For the last ten years they have had us all doing it for free.
To be fair, I enjoyed Starfield. Six months after it came out. Those first six months were a chore. Perhaps I should have been paid for that?
@Frmknst This got a genuine laugh from me!
Disregarding bugs and all I think I played Skyrim and Oblivion much too late to be interested in them. Combat felt dated etc.
However, I can honestly say I'm genuinely enjoying Starfield. I'll probably go back and play Fallout 4 as I've never played any of those titles. I've heard to steer clear of Anniversary updates as they've broken the game again...
