After many rumours and much speculation, CD Projekt Red has announced a third expansion for The Witcher 3 really is happening. It's called Songs of the Past and it's coming to PS5 (no PS4 version) in 2027.
The developer pitches the DLC as the following: "Songs of the Past will return players to the role of legendary monster slayer Geralt of Rivia for a brand new adventure when it launches in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC."
CD Projekt Red is creating the expansion in collaboration with Fools Theory, which previously made The Thaumaturge and is currently producing The Witcher 1 Remake. More details on Songs of the Past will be released in late Summer 2026.
When it launches, Songs of the Past will be a brand new expansion for a 12-year-old game. Its first two pieces of DLC, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine launched within the first two years of the RPG launching. Now, CD Projekt Red is returning for more story content over a decade later.
Of course, having put out Cyberpunk 2077, it's returning to The Witcher universe with The Witcher 4, which is currently in development.
You will need the most up-to-date PS5 version of The Witcher 3 to play Songs of the Past next year; the original PS4 edition has been abandoned for this content drop. Will you be playing the DLC in 2027? Let us know in the comments below.

MEDALLION IS HUMMING Blows dust off
So excited for this!! My favourite game of all time! ⚔️
Nice but seems to me it says Witcher 4 is a long way out…
Mannnn I've been itching to do another run. Time to get the silver sword back out folks 🏃😎
And I still haven't done any of the Witcher 3 dlcs after beating it. Lol
Wow guess I need to start playing this game now I own it years and I'm still in the starting area!
@Dodoo not necessarily. I can see it coming by 2028 which isn't that far out
@Skinny-Pete same!
Just to get to play a new Geralt adventure it will be worthy
Yup, will be to start practicing my monster-slaying again...
Hoping for a Switch 2 next-gen update before this game arrives!
Nice. Still the GOAT imho.
I had faith. If it's anywhere near as good as Blood and Wine or Hearts of Stone, it'll blow any recent DLC out of the water
@Dodoo Who knows if it means anything for the 4th game. Borderlands 2 released DLC 5 years after the game released to tie into the 3rd game, while Mass Effect 2 had the Arrival DLC to tie into ME3 (but with only two years between the games).
A good way of building some hype and getting people playing again.
Bizarre, but cool. (Would have been cooler with no bloody leaks!)
I actually didn't finish Blood & Wine so it's a good reason to go back. Maybe they will improve the combat which wasn't great even then but hasn't aged well either.
I stand corrected - I believed to the last moment that rumours had no substance.
Will probably play it but not at release - will wait for 50% discount at least. Uneasy about the quality as it is obviously a marketing tool for W4
@Nepp67 oh dude I'm jealous, they're both incredible. Ones just a cool story line, but Blood & Wine could be a game all in itself - one of the best DLC's I've ever played.
That said, new DLC for a 12yo game is both exciting and a bit strange. They can't update the gameplay too much or it'll fall out of line with the original, but the original is 12 years old (excellent, but parts of the gameplay are outdated).
Still, it's more Witcher, and thatll never be a bad thing
Day one, and hell, has it actually been 12 years since W3 released?? We are getting old here
Awesome to finally have it officially confirmed. I was hoping for later this year but it doesn’t really matter when it comes.
Currently doing another play through of the game now.
I thought we might get a trailer at SoP or Gamefest but sounds like it will be a bit later.
@Killionaire Good motivation to play it now at least buddy haha
I'll toss a coin the witcher(devs) oh valley of plenty..... something something.
This is cool. I never really got into the Witcher, but I like everything I see (I lose steam REAL fast with open world games). I imagine it will dovetail in some way with Witcher 4.
So the “Complete Edition” is no longer complete.
I bought the DLCs day 1 and didn't finish either! I should go do them before the new DLC releases!
@themightyant it's aged really poorly wrt combat. Feels so clunky now. I am hoping they update it but I feel like they won't fidget with the old engine too much now.
“What now, you piece of filth?”
Found the base game to be very 7/10 but the DLCs were excellent 9/10 quality (crap combat still an issue) so I'm hopeful for this one.
@Skinny-Pete @Killionaire That makes three of us! I’ve owned it for years, started it way back on PS4 and only got a few hours along before falling off of it. The game didn’t click for me at the time but I’m convinced it was just I was in the wrong mindset at the time. Since then I’ve read a couple of the Witcher books and I’m much more excited to give it a second try.
Woohoo ... fair play to them
no switch version the only console I have the game on 🙄
Awesome news. Only completed one playthrough of W3 myself but that includes all the DLC on PS4.
Edit: Forgot to mention, it is a brilliant game with outstanding DLC. Those that have not given it a go, please do.
Woah! Brilliant news. Take my money & sign me up!
Diablo II, Castle Crashers and The Witcher 3. Are DLCs for old games the new hotness?
Wind’s howling.
Yes please. A Pro patch would also go down a treat with this.
@Th3solution Yeah I know what you mean I'm terrible at starting games getting about a hour or so into it and leaving them for months even years.
I recently downloaded it again as I got another couple games off the backlog finished.
I'll probably just start it fresh to be honest.
I might even dip a toe in it tonight!
Hopefully we enjoy it lads!
@Th3solution @Killionaire @Skinny-Pete
Gather round, fine fellows, and let me tell you a tale. I was once exactly the same as you, as Sol well knows, and yet now my name here is based on an alias from one of the short stories from The Witcher book "The Last Wish" after having completed the game and the DLC's and read all the books, in full, and realising just how good all of it is. CDPR has done a phenomenal job in adapting a world and set of characters, but also making a hugely detailed game with enough of its own charm to be a standalone.
It is a very common phenomenon with this game, that it takes a while to get into (multiple years and attempts in many cases, and I know many people that had a similar experience to me), but then, one day, it will grab you and then you will realise that the two DLC's are basically better than a lot of games, too... but then that won't be enough, and you will want more so then you get all the books and / or audiobooks and start to take others under your wing that once stuggled to get into the game and witness their journey into getting hooked, themselves 😄
My one tip for getting the most out of the game is picking up contracts as you enter a new location, and using those as a way to experience all of the side stories and exploration outside of the main quest, rather than just going "question mark hunting" which can lead to fatigue.
Also, always 'save before cave' making a hard save before entering any caves or more linear areas so your autosaves don't overwrite and mean you have no escape to the open-world if you get stuck at any point 😁
Honestly, there's a reason the game won hundreds of awards. Just sometimes you have to play it until you discover why yourself and that can take a while. Hopefully it gets you on your next try, but if it doesn't, remember... it took many people 3 or 4 attempts over a span of years for the game to click, so never give up completely or you may miss out on something you would love 😄
@Th3solution might as well check in with where you are in terms of books at the moment? Have you reached a point where you are ready to jump into the game again? It feels like a good a time as any 😁
I have a feeling that this may be the expansion in which we say goodbye to Geralt. I think the story will see him die in the end, and will then enable the developers to move forward with a new protagonist in The Witcher 4. So, rather than spend the beginning of the next game playing a Geralt, we can dive straight into Ciri's story, which may even be a story of revenge...
WOOOOOOOOWW!!! IT'S DAY ONE PURCHASE!!! PERIOD!!
I actually never got around to playing the first two expansions. This will do the trick!
@Ravix After finishing Blood of Elves I took a break from the series, partly because I wanted to pace myself through the books to coincide with prepping for playing the game, if that makes sense. BoE was great but as you and Furious had warned me it is a slower pace table-setter of a story to establish circumstances for the main plot going forward. My understanding is that The Time of Contempt is when things really start to reach a fever pitch and so I didn’t want to waste the crescendo too early before starting the game. Even reading the first 3 books had me itching to try the game and I knew it would turn my gaming schedule upside-down if I did. Still, I probably will get to ToC sometime soon, and then it will hopefully lead into starting the game shortly after. This DLC announcement is further motivation to get back into it. There’s just too many blasted games! Rough estimate though would be read/listen to ToC and Baptism of Fire in the next couple months or so, then launch into the game late 2026 or early 2027 maybe.
Not sure we will ever find out some of this information but it will be very Interesting to see how this does in both numbers and ROI and how happy they are with those figures. Always good to see new approaches and releasing fully fleshed out dlc for a game well over a decade old is a new approach. Hope it does what they need it to do purely for the fact that they've taken a new, risky approach.
@Ravix Thanks dude 😀 I'm going to give it a proper go probably start a new one tonight.
Seems like a game you can get lost in I just need to get to a point in the game where I'm not thinking about how to play it and I'm just playing it if you know what I mean?
But yeah you have inspired me even more than this dlc announcement to get into the game once and for all won't be giving up this time!
@Fiendish-Beaver for me, Geralt and Doug Cockle deserve immortality. Also, only one person can ever kill Geralt, in my opinion, and that is Andrzej Sapkowski.
Buuuut... locking him in a magically sealed dungeon and having an antagonist torturing Geralt and Yen to try and get control of Ciri? That I could get behind, and it feels very 'on brand'. I can also think of a fitting antagonist for that being a potential thread of our main tale.
Either way, exciting times in the world of The Witcher 😄
Never finished the existing DLC for this game. I’ll have to actually go and do that. Actually been thinking I need to go back and finish it anyway. Amazing game, did a replay of it about 2 years ago and loved it.
Jeez, what is it with people now days. Within an hour of something being revealed there are comments about waiting for a sale. If you are a Witcher fan who loved 3, then this is very cool news as many believed one of their favourite game of all time was done and dusted.
I believe this will likely be £11.99 to £20 for a 20 hour story expansion. If you loved the Witcher 3 and have a job, then spending the equivalent of a coffee and sandwich at Starbucks isn't a lot of money. TBH, if that kind of money is a big ask, then you probably shouldn't be playing games anyway.
This isn't aimed at anyone specifically, it just feels like every article on every site at the moment. People seem to be really down on their supposed hobby. The article could be labelled " Rockstar release GTA 6 via shadow drop today at half price" and someone in the comments would be there saying, "ughh, Rockstar sucks. Wait till they iron out the bugs. Just play saints row 3 instead as it was always better anyway".
its just getting really, really boring
Yeah, I don''t see that happening, @THEBrew! But it would be very amusing if they did. I think he'll have one last epic battle and end up dying of his injuries with all the companions from his adventures encircling him. It's be pretty epic, I imagine...
Yes, @Ravix. I think some kind of imprisonment would perhaps be an option as it leaves a return (or rescue) of Geralt as an option. Either way, I do think this new DLC is to set up Ciri as the new protagonist.
As you say, exciting time to be a Witcher fan, and I only replayed the game last year too...
Think I was about 3/4s through my 'death march' run on ps4, when the ps5 upgrade dropped. Loaded it up and got immediately battered, with no idea of what I was doing.
But, yet to play any of the dlc, and that might just be a good way to segue back to it, before finishing my adventures!
@Dodoo After the cyberpunk fiasco, I hope they take their time. Let them cook as they say.
@Fiendish-Beaver hope not mate. Hopefully he just retires and just chills in the bath lol 🤞
This is awesome. I probably have 200+ hours in Witcher 3 on multiple consoles and never finished it. It's already so massive. Guess its time to correct that before this releases.
So excited! Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time. The 2 DLCS are so good. Just finished my 3rd full playthrough ( including the DLCS) a couple months ago.
Disappointed it's dated for 2027 and "Songs of the Past" doesn't sound like a bridge dlc to Witcher 4. But until we see more I'll stay excited.
Music to my ears!... do ya get it???
In all seriousness, I can't wait. Witcher 3 is the GoaT, so I'll be there day one.
Fingers crossed they also come out with the promised modding for consoles soon. A Pro patch would be very welcome, too.
just in time as Im doing my first run right now
I know we're kinda already halfway thru 2026 but reading 2027 feels so far away and doubly so for Witcher 4 itself 😩. I really need to get started on my Witcher series playthrough tho
@Fiendish-Beaver I hope not sounds like a Last Of Us 2 mistake!
As someone else suggested, they could imprison Geralt somewhere, @Alpine. That would mean that Ciri's adventures could be all about tracking him down so as to rescue him. That would at least do away with finishing him off once and for all, and annoying the community in the process...
Agreed, @GamingGod. As has been mentioned, imprisoning him and having the story be about Ciri looking for him would be a good alternative to killing him off. Maybe they have learned from The Last of Us that the community will not take kindly to killing a beloved character...
Well we know you were looking for an excuse for another play thru @ShogunRok might as well wait for next year now. 😎
I know we own the Complete PS4 version then got it on PS5 for my kid to play but they never did, so they'll have a reason to know. Not sure I'll play it myself but my wife and I may watch my kid play the entire thing.
That's a sign for me to replay the game again, let's goooo!!!!
Best game ever getting even better! This cannot come soon enough
@Fiendish-Beaver garult has had a trilogy, the good ending was always ciri becoming a,witcher, plus witcher 1 is getting a remake. Garult will have a similar role to vessimir in witcher 4
Awesome! Can't wait!
@Dodoo It was always a long way out. The game entered production in late 2024, by CDPR's own admission, so we would always be looking at a 5 year dev cycle if not 7.
It was funny to see people thinking that the game would release next year.
@Th3solution oof! You and your schedules 😛 you know I'm a vibes guy and so I do forget you and a few others plan these things out a bit. I suppose, if you have no interest in GTA, you will need something to get stuck into this year, though. But it would also be cool if you threw the schedules away and started TW3 with a few others here on Push Square and shared the journey together in a Witcher 3 thread. Hint hint. Do it 💀 Yeah, definitely the novels are a slower pace, but as I was already into the world and characters, and I don't mind a slow pace (currently reading/listening to some Tolkein, ha) I was locked-in and absolutely binged them one summer after finishing Blood & Wine. For you, who knows the best approach, but if the urge to play the game is there it does feel like a good time to do just that. But, again, that is coming from an outsider's vibes perspective on gaming and if youbhave you're heart set in finishing the next novel as a lead-in who am I to argue 😄
@Skinny-Pete nice, hope you eventualy enjoy it 😄 yeah, I know exactly what you mean (I think). Part of why it took me ages and multiple attempts was I was coming from no real fantasy RPG experience, and all the crafting, maintaining, looting etc was overwhelming, on top of having all these quests, sidequests and skill trees, and then having to know all that while getting surrounded by wolves and wraiths with no idea where I was supposed to be going to get the most out of it. Eventually it all came together and the questing and combat and exploration became an easy to enjoy gameplay loop. It is 100% a game you have to discover yourself in your own time and find your own optimal path for enjoyment, though 😄 thankfully there is a hefty quest log and plenty of player-choice to do just that.
If anyone does end up starting in the next few weeks, stop by the thread in the forum and i'm sure people will be happy to read how it is going, or share any tips or pointers.
This is good news, just recently brought Witcher 2 & 3 on Xbox having never played them before.
By the time I get round to playing and completing them could be just in time for the new DLC 😊
Entirely possible, @Dragon83, but I don't think the developers will want Geralt to feature in Witcher 4...
@Fiendish-Beaver ah mate… you mention tlou2! After having the story spoiled for me I actually refused to play it for so long (I was that guy). But I’ve recently thought sod it im going have to play this game and I have to say it’s absolutely brilliant lol. I’m such a tool sometimes. The story still stung though 😂
On the fence about this. I played through and loved Witcher 3... on PC. One of my favorite games of all time.
But I only have PS5 now. Not sure I've got a new run from scratch in me just to try out a new DLC.
@The_Jobbo I bet a bunch of people will read your comment and stop behaving the way they do immediately.
This should have been a standalone DLC. Because this screws anyone that played this on PS4.
Holy moly, day 1 thanks to CDPR. I play this game almost annually, takes days now over months.
If they put it all on a single ps5 Blu-ray I'll retire my PS4 launch edition disc. Even got the Gwent decks from the other 2 expansions.
Setting things up for The Witcher 4 I'd wager.
Could also mean TW4 will be released a lot later than hoped, and they're trying to keep the interest and revenue going in the interim, since Cyberpunk will no longer receive any content...
Will play this DLC of course, day one purchase.
Think I'll also fit a full game + existing DLC playthrough before it launches, not only for nostalgia's sake but also because it's an impressive, epic, title!
@Ravix Yes, that might be a good target — when the rest of the world is playing GTA6, I can be playing Witcher 3. And I will most definitely be posting thoughts. When I get to that point maybe I’ll be able to recruit some other PS users to play along. I imagine the DLC will act as a prompt for many others to jump in or do a replay.
Consider the blade oiled, the potions brewed.
The wind is howling.
The Path calls.
@Fiendish-Beaver I like the sound of that! like a reverse situation from him doing that in 3 for her.
@Dodoo fans reaction was not very positive for w4 so they may change some stuff and fill the gap with things like this new dlc
I’ve been saving a third replay of both DLC for awhile now. Once we get a firm release date, I’m jumping back in. The more Geralt, the better. Although, I’m fully in support of Ciri in TW4
I've been a Wither fan long before the games, got the collectors' edition of the first game, got W2 on day one (finished it several years later, my laptop couldn't handle it ). Bought Wither 3 on day one for PC, both DLCs were day one as well, I have it for PS5 as well and I STILL have not even finished even the main storyline from the base game. Not because I don't like it - quite the contrary, it's amazing. I just always wanted to give this game the attention it deserves; play it without distractions, to fully get lost in the world. Fast forward 12 years and it seems I have to give up on that fantasy and use what little time I have left for gaming and just try to enjoy it however I can. I mean it would be nice to finish it before Wither 4 comes out, eh?
@For-Kier Of course not! But I have the right to upload my inane, inconsequential ramblings just like everyone else does.
Even posts that call for people to whinge less and enjoy their hobby are criticised with sarcastic comments and that is totally fine.....I am sure after your comment, people like me will also change our ways.
Look, I get your point and you are right. However, with the world the way it is at the moment little things like a new Witcher expansion in 2026 is a cool thing. Don't you get tired of opening every article and seeing the same "this sucks" message about everything? Is it just me who wonders how bored people have to be to actively click on stuff they don't like to tell a load of strangers that they don't like it?
Sigh, you are right. I shouldn't say anything... what's the point
It was undoubtedly a sad moment in the game, @GamingGod, but I actually think it was one of the most powerful moments in gaming. If not the most powerful moment in gaming. I certainly cannot think of another one that had a lasting memory like it.
It will take a lot of courage to kill off Geralt, has to be said. As others have said, that may not be what they do, and they may not do it because of the hostile reaction to the death of Joel. It's as if beloved people and characters cannot die, and I found the reaction to be over the top because all too often it's the other way around and characters survive moments they really shouldn't, which then feels ridiculous and actually makes you realise it is only a game.
Such moments make you realise that life is truly brutal at times, and you can take that as gospel from a retired cop who has seen death all too often. The good guys do not always make it to a ripe old age, even when you feel they should. It's part of life, and it ain't pretty.
That got a bit serious. My apologies... 😉
@The_Jobbo They're just being cautious with their money. There's no issue with that at all.
Of course not! That isn't what I am saying at all.
There is a big difference between waiting for a game to come out, looking at reviews and deciding that they can't really justify the cost right now and waiting for a sale. That isn't what I am saying....
My point is that something gets announced, we have no details, no price, no release date etc, just a confirmation that there is a new thing coming... and within 3 minutes of the announcement there will be comments about the game being trash and that they will wait for a sale.
The issue isn't that people should be respectful of what they spend their money on. My issue was some people's immediate negative reaction to everything as soon as possible with zero context.
Its every article man. Every single one
Welp, as this is the single biggest "I'll get round to it eventually" on my wishlist, I'll be hoping for a nice new complete edition I can finally buy and get stuck into.
@HopscotchPlus it would be a cool move if this was a free download for all the complete edition owners…
@Ravix 🫡
