PS5 Already Winning GTA 6 Battle as PlayStation Drives 64% of GTA Online Spend 1

GTA 6 is going to be a juggernaut on the PS5, and we finally have some hard GTA 5 data to illustrate why.

According to information obtained via a recent Rockstar ransom attack, more than 64% of GTA Online’s weekly revenue is generated by PlayStation.

The report reveals that the multiplayer game accumulates almost $10 million per week across all platforms thanks to the sale of Shark Cards and GTA+ memberships, illustrating the monumental success of the live service game.

It’s worth noting that a staggering proportion of players remain on the PS4, with Sony’s last-gen console beating the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC for active users. The PS5’s number is almost double that of the PS4.

There’s a lot more data you can read on the GTAForums, but due to the nature of the way this information was obtained, we won’t be presenting it in full here.

Nevertheless, with a significant proportion of the property’s players in its ecosystem – and a healthy number of PS4 players still to upgrade – Sony must be licking its lips at the prospect of GTA 6. It’s clear from this data that the vast majority of the franchise’s fanbase is playing on PlayStation.

That makes sense, of course, because the PS2 in particular received multiple timed exclusive GTA games, starting with GTA 3 in 2001. That game wouldn’t come to Xbox until 2023, and while the wait was shorter for both Vice City and San Andreas, both games arrived on PlayStation first.

Sony lost its stranglehold a little bit during the PS3 era, when Microsoft announced timed exclusive DLC for the Xbox 360 version of GTA 4. But it looks like it’s reclaimed its grip on the crime sandbox’s install base in the years since.

GTA 6’s most recent trailer was captured on base PS5 hardware, reflecting the fact it’s likely the lead platform for the anticipated outing.

There has been speculation Sony may have marketing dibs on the 19th November title, which means any commercials or trailers shown on TV or cinemas will have the PS5 branding attached. That would be a huge coup for PlayStation if true.
