There will be reason to return to Nioh 3 from 27th April 2026, as Team Ninja announces it's deploying a new update with fresh features and gameplay improvements for free.
Team Ninja is leaning into the difficulty of the open zone Souls-like by adding new Battle Scrolls described as "high difficulty" to the game, and a new currency called Stone of Penance which you trade in to increase the value of your accessories. By completing the tougher Battle Scrolls, you unlock new abilities.
In addition to the new content, the upcoming PS5 patch will make balance adjustments that enhance select Graces.
Game producer Kohei Shibata shared word of the update on the developer's official website, where it is revealed Team Ninja continues to work on the two confirmed expansions for Nioh 3. "We would first like to express our gratitude to the many players around the world who have taken the time to play Nioh 3 since its release," said Shibata. "We are currently hard at work developing future updates and DLC for the game."
The first DLC, titled Hell Rising, is expected to launch in September 2026, while the second, named Hell Insurrection, should arrive before the end of February 2027.
Nioh 3 was comfortably the most accessible title in the series when it launched earlier this year, so tougher side quests should satisfy those looking for a harder challenge.
In our 8/10-rated Nioh 3 PS5 review, we praised its accessibility and hardcore action. "This is a familiar feeling title for a fanbase that knows what it wants, for few franchises do hardcore action better. Nioh 3 is its latest triumph." This game just won't let me go. 🥷
How's the loot in this one? I quite liked Nioh 1, but I found Nioh 2 very busy and had too much low tier loot. Is sorting easier?
I'd love to play this but I don't have the time. I'm also undecided if the games been shipped complete so I'll wait until they've finished the game.
@Northern_munkey Damn bro you be petty with that comment now huh?
Got the platinum for this but quite happy to refresh my skillset ie get annihilated for this update.
@cainhurst94 There’s still loads of loot but sorting is the easiest it’s ever been in the series, down to auto selling/dismantling specific tiers. There’s ups and downs depending on what you value in a Nioh game but quality of life has never been better.
@cainhurst94
Loot is easily fixed by this one - you can choose to filter which loot you want automatically converted to cash or Amrita
@Northern_munkey
Fully wrapped at ship. Complete game, no freezes, crashes, unfinished or rushed regions, etc. fully baked. The DLC is legit DLC, not “hey look the game’s ready”
Been playing NG+ just because it’s so fun and combat is so satisfying. Looking forward to these updates!
Nioh is not a Souls like. I've done everything you could do and puts hundreds of hours into the series. I hate that people try to call it that when the gameplay is totally different.
Return to it? I haven't left, the game is huge.
@Oram77 whatever do you mean?
@Northern_munkey Can confirm it's complete. I've played 60 hours and am in the second proper region.
Also no crashes, but will say the framerate takes a bit of a hit in the second region for sure (and against some bosses; there's way too many particle effects on screen when you're in the demon realm).
But I only just completed it yesterday... Will I ever be free?
@Gremio108 If they add in the underworld, then never! 😂
@Metonymy The only thing I feel they missed from the loot filter was a set bonus filter so you can just scrap all non set items. Especially on the first run that would have been great.
Okay but do we still need to wait for the first DLC to be able to use 90% of the crafting materials that drop in the base game, or...?
It's wild that there's a crafting item that's only available as an ultra-rare drop or for a hefty sum of 4000 Glory, yet like most monster materials has absolutely no use whatsoever in existing content.
@Metonymy May god have mercy on my soul
Best game I've played in a looong while. Probably one of my all time favorites and I've been playing games over 40 years(atari 2600). This game is absolutely huge and never got boring. So many cool weapons with their own movesets. The insane amount of loot is a bit much...OK, more than a bit. However, it's very easy to filter the junk so it automatically converts to Amrita. I spent well over 100 hours on the Gane, finally beat it and every side quest (which I pretty much never do on games I play) and I haven't bothered to craft any weapons or anything from the blacksmith woman. I'm highly looking forward to any new content they release. Free, paid, whatever. I'm all in! Talk about getting your money's worth. I happily paid full price(bought it on release day) and I feel like I still owe them some more for all that content, lol!
@Skoops identical experience!
@ilyn That’s a great call, especially before graces, as you said. Even then, I don’t see why you couldn’t theoretically filter for specific graces. There’s room for improvement, maybe we’ll see it in the update.
Return? I’ve only managed a couple of hours and new games keep coming out.
Back in my speccy days a top game release would be a Christmas present I’d be playing for the year +
@JohntheRaptor let's be real; it's a combination of Souls-Like and Diablo-Like. It doesn't fit neatly into either box, but calling the gameplay 'completely different' is disingenuous when most Souls-Likes have their own quirks and similarities.
