Sakura Wars 30th Anniversary

SEGA has acknowledged that come September, Sakura Wars will celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Granted, this classic series has never quite found its footing outside of Japan, but it's a property that many believe SEGA could, and should, pay a little more attention to.

You may remember 2020's Sakura Wars on PS4 — that was the publisher's most recent stab at reviving the long-absent franchise. And to be fair, it was a decent game; a mix of character-driven stories and hack-and-slash mech battles.

It didn't exactly set the world alight, though, and we've heard almost nothing about the property since — at least, in terms of console gaming.

And to be clear, SEGA hasn't said anything about there being a new project in the works. Upon announcing this anniversary, it confirmed that there'll be "merchandise and events", so we'd advise against getting your hopes up just yet.

Still, these anniversaries do sometimes throw fans a bone or two. Interviews with people close to the series, for example, can hint towards something going on behind the scenes. But again, it's too early to tell just how in-depth these celebrations are going to be.
