Recently, Kingdom Hearts turned 24 years old, and it's left fans hungrier than ever for news on what comes next.

Square Enix's beloved RPG franchise, which blends together Disney worlds and characters with over-the-top anime antics, got its start on 28th March 2002.

It's been hugely successful, with many games releasing over the years, but as ever, fans are eager to learn more about the future of the series.

Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced almost four years ago, and in that time we've heard barely a peep about it.

There hasn't even been a whole lot of recognition of the series' 24th anniversary, but Square Enix did provide fans with some new artwork and, more importantly, a tease of what's to come:

As translated by Genki, a message from director Tetsuya Nomura says the team is "currently working hard towards the 25th anniversary" before thanking fans for their support.

In other words, it sounds like we might finally be getting some sort of meaningful update in about a year's time.

So far, for Kingdom Hearts 4, we've had that initial reveal trailer, a batch of screenshots, and not much else.

We suppose, if you've already waited this long, what's one more year? About six months ago, Nomura assured that development on the game is "steadily moving forward", so it's not at a standstill, at least. Fingers crossed it'll be worth the wait.
