So excited for this - but will be more so nearer release.

Unsure how to feel. Love most of the games but 3 was such a colossal letdown and I’m not entirely fond of the direction they’re going in.

Sigh, I was hoping for a Kingdom Hearts game to be released this year.

Who cares. Square has all but burned their bridges with me. KH3 was a mess, nothing resembling a cohesive story. FFXV was a half finished mess with a horrific last 10 hours. And these are games that took eons to develop. Kingdom Hearts skipped the entire PS3 generation. Then I see other companies like From Software put out excellent games every 2-3 years.

I thought with the end of the Dark Seeker saga/storyline, the next MC would be a new protagonist or a returning one (Riku or Kairi maybe) but it's still Sora... oh well, can't wait for more of Nomura's cringey dialogue/writing xD

@RBMango The Blue flame intrigued me a lot and very surprisingly unless we play as Donald and Goofy, Mickey or perhaps Kairi it looks like there truly might be no Disney levels this time I'm beyond intrigued

@Keyblade-Dan I predict that the Sora part of the story will take place entirely in Quadratum, but we get Disney worlds with other playable characters. There's no way a numbered entry won't have mostly Disney worlds.

Interesting. Flowmotion, shotlocks, and form changes all make a return. Makes sense that they'd import most of the tech/gameplay from KH3/UE4. Curious about Donald and Goofy running into (apparently) Hades. No Xiggy details yet. Although I anticipate an overly complicated Nomura script, I remain optimistic about it all.

It’s hard to get hyped after the disappointment from kingdom hearts 3.

I feel you but I say direct your blame towards SquareEnix for having arguably the worst development timeframes in the entire industry. I was 16 when FFXV was announced and 26 when it released. Nations have been created and collapsed in less time than it takes them to put out a game. Their development schedule is a joke I got tired of a long, long time ago.

I was curious and checked kh3 score and has an 83. The second one, which is the one I played, has a 87. It could be worse but how you guys talk about it seems like I would have expected a 70 something.

This will probably come out the same year that the final part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes out. Oh, wait, maybe that will only be Part 2 the way things are going...

I thought I was done with Kingdom Hearts, but I guess not. Ignoring the mobile games bc zzzzzz but KH4 looks impressive. I enjoyed KH3 gameplay but found the story really shat the bed in the last few hours, so I'm gonna look forward to KH4 just for more fun gameplay. Time for my annual KH2FM replay!

I've never played the series at all despite wanting to in the past. It all sounds like a daunting and confusing task though, which has always been the case for me even after the 1.5+2.5 release and such on PS4.

Not even the people that dig up and explain the lore in FromSoft games could crack this series' storyline. KH1 was pretty straightforward but KH2 and each entry after turned the plot into an indecipherable fever dream. Any attempt at cohesion or a sensible plot was thrown out the window, but that is a part of these games' charm. The scene where Mickey Mouse is wearing an emo black leather zipper jacket and is supposed to be presented as this anime-ified powerful force of justice makes me laugh out loud every time at the off the charts ridiculousness of it all. Some say cringe, others say charm. You decide.

I agree totally. Going back, it's like watching that kids show you loved as a kid but now you are thinking, "I actually enjoyed this?!" Like you are trying to crack the code of your own psyche and the effects of time on your tastes.

But to be honest, the first game (considered on its own merits) has a special place for me and I still replay it. Its whimsical, ridiculous, crossover was done well, and it had good gameplay.

@Keyblade-Dan Treasure Planet, The Incredibles, and A Bug's Life are the big three I now want to see in KH4. Turning Red would be a fun world too. I kept remarking to myself during the movie that it would make a great KH world.

@Voltan All the games are good-to-great except for 3. And even 3 can be enjoyed to an extent if you can turn your brain off, skip the cutscenes and enjoy the flashy combat. Hard to do the first playthrough though because it's so lore-heavy

Granted, I only played half of the first one, but I didn't get the sense the characters were from a universe similar to ours.

Seriously, if you've never played Kingdom Hearts, don't play anything Past KH2. Kingdom Hearts 2 is one of the best PS2 games out there, but everything past that is utter dogS***. I expect this to be no different, especially after how much 3 sucked a**.

The combination with real life textures make this game looking like the last tom and jerry movie in the real world. Imo, this is an awful idea.

Holy crap that was amazing and the music as usual never lets down. Its kinda crazy how they still managed to make Sora's movements look natural despite the more realistic look. Please don't take years to release. I need kh4, ffxvi, and dq 12 within my lifetime

Hmmmmmmmmmm. As a giant fan of the first 2 games, but ultimately left very cold by the 3rd, i dont know what to make of this. I could quite happily have left the series after that. I am willing to give this a chance if Square make sure to improve the combat, and make the story more coherent. At this point it probably needs a reboot for that to happen though.

Also Square need to overhaul their development pipeline. If they have announced this, no 4 or 5 year wait for news or a release

Strelitzia looks neat. I'm not sure I've followed the story completely since Unchained came out, but as long as I'm having fun, do I care?

Glad for the fans who have been waiting for this. I lost interest in the series a long time ago, the story being one of the key reasons, definitely one of the most convoluted stories I ever seen in gaming, or anything really.😵‍💫

@Ashina @gigiard: I could be wrong but didn't someone at the KH team (I think it might have been Nomura) once say that Sora will always remain the main protagonist or something like that? I doubt his story will end anytime soon.

Although, if they set the games worlds in the hideous live action Disney remakes to match the edgy graphics, it has the potential to be unintentionally hilarious!
Still, count me out, I'm done with this series. (And I used to be right into this series, bought a DS, 3DS, and a PSP just to play the respective spin off games for each system)
Better yet ditch Sora, Riku, the organisation, etc and make a game starring Donald & Goofy exploring various Disney worlds. I'd play that!

And the hype starts! This is looking awesome!

I hope Nomura doesn't add yet more story to boring Android games without replicating it to the numbered entries through cutscenes...

Edit: This comment section is making me sad. I'm a fan of the series, and I really enjoyed KH3. The story in the series is confusing, sure, mostly due to how spread out it is between games and platforms, but really no more confusing than most animes. Classic good vs evil / light vs darkness stuff, with some crazy concepts in the middle for fun. You can't seriously play a game where Final Fantasy meets Donald Duck and Goofy and expect it to be a masterpiece of literature, you know.

@get2sammyb I think you already know the answer to that question, haha. You can play and enjoy the game, in particular the individual worlds, but the story arc won't have much impact given you're not following the story. It's like skipping straight to the final arc of an anime.

I'd still recommend it if you're interested. It's a fun game either way. And if you like it, you can always expand your understanding of the story later. Also, KH4 shall start a brand new arc in the series, which means that if you like the gameplay of KH3, you can invest on the story starting with 4.

i think this random announcement is damage control for all the negativity coming out of s-e these days. they have been on a downward spiral and need to appease the shareholders with some news that actually getnerates buzz. not since the ff7r has there been anything interesting from s-e. we all know how mismanaged this company is so don't expect kh4 for at least 4-5 years. after completing kh3 and feeling rather disappointed and underwhelemed by the lack of new ideas (not to mention it was too easy for its own good and became a button masher), i think i should move on. the story really is as bad as people say — makes no sense and has lost all meaning. i would go as far to say that the story in the kingdom hearts franchse is the most trite, convoluted drivel i have seen in any media. period. other than nostalgia for nostalgia sake (if you have been there since the beginning) and the somewhat appealing character designs of the main cast, i do not understand what the apeal is and how this franchise has lasted as long as it has. we'll see if they can give this franchise the overhaul it needs but i won't count on it. better graphics are not going to be enough this time.

@Vix They gave up their emulator obsession, which caused significant development problems for a lot of games, so they're not going to have ridiculous delays anymore. The game is most likely to release in three to four years.

I hope they add a feature that summarizes the other side games. I haven’t played one of the non-main entries. It’s too hard to follow. Hated the flow motion too in KH3. I hope the game makes many great strides. The potential is there, just do it.

P.S. please have a Raya/Moana/Coco Worlds. Older movies with new worlds would be great too. I think “hub” worlds need to have more various characters involved from different franchises. Say the heartless devoured their world’s light and turned it into pure darkness. Then they escaped to the hub world but got separated. Maybe some questlines of finding different characters who lost their world and got lost on their way to the hub worlds in a few of the various playable worlds to encourage exploring more. Dunno if that makes sense. All have awesome possibilities for different Heartless. KH4 I have high hopes!

@naruball Although it's already 1 year, somehow this gen still seems new to me, I think it's because I only played 2 next-gen only games (ratchet ps5 and demon's souls, returnal didn't feel like next-gen for me).

This gen still lack games that really feels next-gen, on previous gen, that game is uncharted 4.

@wiiware yeah, I know what you mean. I've had a ps5 for a little less than a year and haven't been wowed by a ps5 only game yet, though I found Ratchet pretty spectacular and Astro's Playroom incredibly fun in new and exciting ways.

A new Tomb Raider and now a new Kingdom Hearts. List is filling up nicely with my old favorites.

How has no one mentioned the feet? I know I haven't played a KH game since 2 in 2006, but Sora always had huge clown shoes!

i expect Kingdom Hearts 4 to release in 2027/2028.
