If you’ve spent more than a few days in Japan over the past few months, you’ll be aware of the cultural impact of Needy Girl Overdose – known as Needy Streamer Overload in the west – and its troubled protagonist OMGkawaiiAngel.
You’ll find figurines and merch based on the visual novel’s heroine in most hobby stores, and there are now even a couple different mangas, too.
The PS5 and PS4 visual novel feels like it’s on the cusp of a real explosion, then, and maker WSS Playground – along with animation company Yostar Pictures and Sony subsidiary Aniplex – are poised to make that a reality.

The anime adaptation will begin airing in April 2026 in Japan, with specially cut theatrical preview screenings scheduled to take place at Theatre Shinjuku and Theatre Umeda prior to broadcast. We wouldn’t rule out a worldwide Crunchyroll release either.
While it may all look fairly twee, this is so much more than its kitsch Windows 95 aesthetic. Without spoiling the story, the game effectively puts you in control of the daily routine of a mentally ill teenager with an extremely high-maintenance personality.
Here’s the anime’s summary, from its official website:
“NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE is a multi-ending adventure game depicting 30 days in the life of a girl with an intense desire for validation who aims to become the ultimate streamer, with the support of ‘P’. Released on Steam in January 2022, the game garnered over three million downloads. Related music tracks have surpassed 400 million streams, cementing its status as an indie game that represents internet culture.”
The game’s brilliant if you haven’t played it, and while we’re somewhat sceptical of how the anime will tackle the subject material, we’re exciting to give it a chance when it airs next year.
