Ubisoft and FX have announced a TV adaptation of the popular open world shooter series, Far Cry.
The official social channels for the franchise recently posted about the news, calling the TV show an anthology series:
As reported by Variety, the show comes from Noah Hawley and Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney); the former is credited with the creation of TV series Fargo, Legion, and Alien: Earth, while the latter is best known for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Mac, who will also star in the Far Cry series, has worked alongside Ubisoft before on Mythic Quest and Side Quest.
As mentioned, the Far Cry show is planned to be an anthology, with each season comprising a new storyline, setting, and cast — similar to the game series. Whether the show will mirror the storylines featured in the games is unknown.
It's planned to stream on Hulu in the USA, and Disney+ everywhere else.
Given the talent at the top, it seems this has good potential as an action thriller TV show.
As for the games, we've yet to see Ubisoft's plans for future titles, but rumour has it the next couple of games will be changing things up.

Ubisoft trying to figure out how to add microtransactions to a TV show as we speak.
Having Noah Hawley attached makes me interested but I'd prefer it if he focused on Alien: Earth.
Without knowing much about Far Cry, how do you do an adaptation of it? Don't all the games feature different characters and are set in different countries? If I had to guess, they're going to either do their own thing, or directly adapt FC3.
@ShadowRJ Well if it's anything like this train wreck:

then it will be a pass from me.
So, expect a lot of dark humor, which is also trademark for Farcry games.
Fargo -> It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia -> Far Cry??? WTF!
If a FC series must exist, those two creatives are a great choice.
Oh! Based on the showrunner, I think this will be pretty darn good.
I'd usually groan at stuff like this, but FX is one of the most consistently great production companies and television networks. And it's from the people behind some of FX's best, so unlike pretty much anything else Ubisoft, I have hope for this.
I personally like the Far Cry games quite a lot, finished 3, Primal, 5 and its sequel, and currently starting 4. Heard that 3 and 4 have the "best" stories, but to be honest the story was not that interesting for me, I liked the gameplay more. Cannot really see how it could work on a tv-show.
This could be good actually. I'm interested.
Sounds awful.
I'll probably watch it.
Whilst not a big fan of late of far cry (too much the same personally), looking forward to what Hawley can do after seeing fargo and legion. His shows have some great and sometimes bizarre casting, and made me really like Billy bob Thornton. It'll perhaps be a sleeper in some respects.
@ShadowRJ states in the article its an anthology, so could be a story every episode about a different country, person; whatever. Think black mirror as a more.recent example. Same universe in a way different stories.
Edit - could.also be say 3 episodes a story, an entire season etc. Depends how long they expect it to run for.
And who else could be in it but Michael Mando and Giancarlo Esposito. Both excellent in Better Call Saul!
So Rob Mac is playing Hurk, right?
@Jammer Each season will be its own story, bit like American Horror Story.
I hope Danny Devito will have a role in it!
@Jammer They might, it'd be the simplest one to do production-wise. Personally I hope they do their own thing.
I'd imagine a similar setup to Fargo with a different story each season, but with some crossover/references to previous characters.
And it'll be set in Wrexham
Adore the franchise, but don’t watch TV. Maybe this could lead to proper new versions of the old games?
Hope the guns dont get stuck like in Far Cry 2. 1-5 and the spin offs were pretty good. Far Cry 6 was meh!
@Vermines
I read Jody Bernal!

Fargo Season 5 is already a bit Far Cry 5, in a way. I don't imagine they would start with an American set one, but you never know. It feels like the smart move will be to start with a more isolated setting to set up the premise. But i'd be hyped to see an American cult season.
The Far Cry franchise has never intrested me that much but I do wanna watch this TV show adaptation since both Hawley and McElhenney will be handling it.
@ShadowRJ
Its from the creators of Fargo which was a black comedy anthology series where every season is a new storyline so that same approach makes sense to me.
Those are two fantastic show runners, it’ll be interesting to see what they cook up together.
