NIS America has shown off a little more of its upcoming action RPG, Kyouran Makaism, and we now know it's officially part of the Disgaea universe.

The game got a brief overview during State of Play Japan:

You play as mercenary Neuer, who's tasked with reclaiming a special pudding on behalf of a young princess.

What ensues is an adventure in which you can summon defeated enemy types in combat, either as allies fighting alongside you or as powerful weapons.

In an interview with Dengeki Online, director Shunsuke Minowa confirmed that Kyouran Makaism is set in the same universe as the popular Disgaea franchise.

"The Disgaea series features numerous 'Netherworlds', and as a part of the same universe, the story of Kyouran Makaism takes place in one of them," Minowa says. "There are also many similarities between Disgaea and Kyouran Makaism when it comes to gameplay. However, the stories pretty much aren't connected, so even newcomers to the series can enjoy the new game."

As Minowa points out, the games do share some DNA, including a penchant for riduculously over-the-top numbers; you can deal millions of points of damage, and level up characters all the way to 9,999 (and beyond).

The game is due for release on 29th January 2026 in Japan, but it's unclear if it's coming to western territories at the same time. We'll try to get that clarified.
