It's been an unusually rocky ride for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which has been widely panned and appears to be selling below the series' usual pace.
While Activision has yet to provide any official sales information itself (which is kinda telling on its own), some data has begun to emerge, including a weak UK launch and, now, a very weak Japanese launch.
As shared by Zuby_Tech on X, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has had the worst Japanese physical launch sales in the franchise's history:
According to the above table, the new game has sold 12,311 copies at Japanese retail, fewer than any other entry, dating all the way back to 2007's Call of Duty 3.
Now, Japan has never been a huge market for the series, and we should remember this is purely based on physical sales data. However, the sales figure is less than half of last year's Black Ops 6, and again, this trend downward is reflected in other markets.

Speculation about why the game is struggling comes down to other games capturing people's attention, like Battlefield 6 and ARC Raiders, as well as a general lack of enthusiasm for the new CoD.
Whatever the case, it's another bump in the road for this year's game.

"Call of Duty is too big for fall"
I really hope that Activision/Microsoft take the right lessons away from this whole debacle.
It's not the futuristic setting. It's not removing cartoon skins. It's not social media dogpiling.
It is the lazy, half-assed campaign. It is the back-to-back BO releases. It is using GAI images when it would be oh so easy to pay a graphic designer to make those. It is annualized releases and not allowing your devs to make something truly special.
Activision has the best FPS developers in the industry at their fingertips. It really shouldn't be such a lift to make a game that people get excited for.
Call of Duty? More like Call of Doodie.
Boom. Gottem.
@Enuo Nailed it.
Hopefully, they will take a lesson away from this to provide a much stronger entry next time. Ideally, you want both Battlefield and COD doing well and innovating, as they would push each other to do better, which benefits the players.
Most players aren't always online ultra fanboys who are COD vs Battlefield - they just want good games.
Nice I'm 14 games behind the current Cod series. That's about 13yrs of boycotting the franchise. Here's to another 13yrs.
@wildcat_kickz "Activision has the best FPS developers in the industry at their fingertips." They had now EA have the best at this moment in time.
@Northern_munkey I see where you're coming from and I think the game modes for BF6 are probably better than CoD, but I vastly prefer the way shooting feels in CoD, especially in Infinity Ward games. They've got the special sauce.
@wildcat_kickz This guy gets it. All of Blops 7's problems stem from mismanagement. Not from anything the internet has cried about over the last year, but rather the reality of an annual franchise that's been going for over 20 years now.
Call of Duty itself still has plenty of life in it. But, like Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 4 before it, the results from Activision forcing one of its helmers to release a CoD back-to-back is never great. But, like Modern Warfare (Remake) or Black Ops: Cold War shows, all it takes is some decent development time and the fanbase will be there. And the internet will have a complete turn around, just like they did with Battlefield 6 after s***talking 2042 for years.
@wildcat_kickz normally I'd agree with you especially with infinity ward but BF6's gunplay is up there with infinity wards best.
That’s really low but not surprising. The Japanese console market really isn’t as healthy as it used to be.
Also interesting ps3/4 cross gen was 1 year, the ps4/5 cross gen 5 years!
pretty sure the launch numbers of this cod would easily be 40k if it had a switch and switch 2 port
but activision seemingly hates money
It's COD. It's Japan. What did you expect? Pokemon numbers? Clearly it has been on the decline over there.
Up next, Hyperdimension Neptunia 27 has the lowest French sales numbers in franchise history🤧
They should close the series until they realise what made cod great in the first place.
Excellent to hear.
Excellent news.
Seems to be about 60% down year on year consistently across all territories.
With the budget probably approaching $1b I wonder if this is actually going to make a big loss.
First person shooter games are not very popular in Japan, might have something to do with the country’s pacifist constitution.
I would say "Well, its CoD and Japan, what would you expect" but damn, worst retail launch in the last 15 years was not on my bingo.
My god this site. Every day another article where MS is horrible and Sony is Jesus. Feeding the fanboys. COD may stink horribly, which it does, but why would you want that? We should want every game to succeed. People hoping games fail. Comments that say excellent news that COD is failing (IOI and UK_). Childish nonsense. Everyone of these game developers, employees, etc., no matter who they work for, have lives and families. They work hard. I cannot believe that the console wars are still occurring. When are people going to grow up.
That's because the game is horrible. Start making really good campaigns again and maybe it would change.
@cburg There's nothing in this article that says "MS is horrible" and "Sony is Jesus". It only showed that Blops 7 has horrible launch in Japan compare to other CoD.
Not sure why you took this news personally and emotionally too.
@PuppetMaster Seriously?
Because the COD series is just lazy, uninspiring, and old.
I noticed World at War isn’t on the list… 😳
@cburg It's pretty funny the way Xbox fans suddenly regard CoD as one of their own, that must be defended, and anyone attacking it is an xbox hater. Like, you wouldn't see a bunch of PlayStation fans getting offended at people bashing Destiny 2, 99% would jump in to pile on.
@SeaDaVie Don't forget Concord. It was a big flop and PushSquare wrote multiple reports about it just fine. But somehow PushSquare report Blops 7 worst launch in Japan as an attack to MS and glazing Sony 😂
@cburg Yes seriously.
@RoomWithaMoose MW2 2022 and Cold War were solid installments.
