Sony’s San Diego Studio, the makers of the MLB The Show franchise, finally seem set to bring the series to PC.
Many of you will know MLB forced PlayStation to launch the franchise on more platforms, which has resulted in recent entries being available on Xbox and Switch.
But considering the platform holder launches the majority of its first-party exclusives on Steam anyway, a PC version of MLB The Show has been conspicuously absent for some time.
Our guess is the dev didn’t want to bite off more than it can chew – it’s gradually evolved its pipeline to add additional systems over the years – and was potentially concerned about cheating too, considering its focus on the card collecting Diamond Dynasty mode.
But now, it’s preparing to release its first “AAA PC title”.
A job listing for a Senior Graphics PC Programmer reveals:
“We are seeking a Senior PC Graphics Programmer to join our team in advancing the visual and technical quality of a AAA PC title. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing real-time graphics systems specifically for PC, ensuring robust performance and high visual fidelity across a wide range of hardware configurations.”
The job listing goes on to list a series of responsibilities explicitly related to PC, including “taking advantage” of platform-specific technologies from the likes of NVIDIA and AMD.
San Diego Studio has, over the years, worked as a support studio on other franchises like ModNation Racers et al – but we have to assume, in this specific instance, it’s referring to MLB The Show.
It’ll be interesting to see whether next year’s MLB The Show 26 is available on PC, or if it’s laying the foundations for MLB The Show 27 instead. We suppose it all depends on how quickly its work is progressing.
While it rarely gets much credit and acclaim on sites like this, MLB The Show is one of Sony’s best-selling series every year, and while it isn’t quite at the top of the sports genre like it was during the PS3 era, it’s still a very consistent franchise overall.
A PC version will of course expand its overall reach, and continue to cement the property as a best-seller.
Interestingly, there’s also been word of a mobile edition as well, so it seems like Sony really wants to expand the reach of this franchise to all baseball fans in the US and beyond.
