Retro Mario Kart Rival Races to PS5, PS4 in Street Racer Collection 1

History knows Street Racer did little to disrupt the success of the Mario Kart franchise, but in 1994 it was very much marketed as a rival to Nintendo’s racer.

With a cool cartoon aesthetic and combat mechanics bringing it closer to, say, Street Fighter, this was a relatively high-profile title at the time.

In addition to the SNES, it was also ported to the SEGA Genesis, PS1, SEGA Saturn, Game Boy, Amiga, PC, and more.

The Street Racer Collection, due out on PS5 and PS4 from 26th November, will feature four of the abovementioned versions of the game: SNES, Genesis, Game Boy, and MS-DOS.

Here’s how dev QUByte describes it:

“Combining the speed of an arcade racer with the brawling of a fighting game, this cult classic made its mark with its originality and its own dose of chaos and personality. Race on tracks filled with obstacles and crazy settings (from Mount Rushmore to Transylvania), use special moves to knock out your rivals, and explore modes that go far beyond traditional racing.”

All of the original modes and circuits are included, alongside local multiplayer for up to four-players in the SNES, Genesis, and MS-DOS versions. (The Game Boy release naturally didn’t include that functionality.)

This one is well worth a look if you’re a fan of those 16-bit racers from the SNES era, as it reviewed relatively well at the time.

Some critics even said the SNES version was better than Super Mario Kart, which was unbelievably high praise at the time.
