Legendary Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive director, the eternally sunglassed Tomonobu Itagaki, has passed away. He was aged just 58.
A post on Facebook first broke the news, but it has since been corroborated by James Mielke on Bluesky.
The original social media post reads, as translated by Google:
“Last Words
The light of my life is finally fading.
The fact that this message has been posted means that the time has finally come. I am no longer in this world.
(I'm asking a loved one to make this final post.)
My life has been a series of battles. I kept winning.
I've caused a lot of trouble, too.
I'm proud to say that I followed my beliefs and fought to the end.
I have no regrets.
However, I'm filled with regret that I wasn't able to deliver a new work to all my fans. I'm sorry.
That's just how it is.
So, it goes.
Itagaki Tomonobu”
James Mielke has since confirmed the news with the following heart-felt post:

Itagaki will be remembered for his rebellious attitude and his input into many of the industry’s most defining works, like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive.
While at times he wasn’t always the biggest fan of PlayStation – often famously preferring Microsoft’s Xbox – his output will be remembered by gamers around the world.
His passing comes at a particularly poignant moment, as Ninja Gaiden 4 from PlatinumGames is due out later this month. He didn’t work on the game.
We’d like to express our very best wishes to Itagaki’s friends and family at this difficult time.
Thanks for the many, many great memories!

RIP Itagaki 😢
Without him, there will be no Dead or Alive series and Ninja Gaiden probably wouldn't be popular if Itagaki didn't pushed it for the 3D reboot.
RIP Itagaki. An abrasive but always interesting character who made some unforgettable games.
That's sad, rest in peace man, you'll always be a legend.
i enjoyed playing most of his games and appreciate his dedication to advancing physics in video games, he will be missed. r.i.p
Rest in Peace legend, you were a master of your craft 💙
RIP Itagaki.
You made some of my favorite games.
Rest in Peace Itagaki.
DOA is my favorite 3D fighter series and I respect the hell out of Ninja Gaiden even though I'm terrible at those games!
He will absolutely be missed. One of the GOATs.
😥 Awful news. Rest in peace.
That is one Hell of an epitaph, total respect to a true legend and auteur.
Aw wtf, that's terrible. I've been playing through the DoA and Ninja Gaiden games and watched his G4 feature just last week.
He's a legend and international treasure, sad to see him gone
R.I.P you absolute legend.
Riposa in pace leggenda.
Sad news for the entire industry. A great game developer.
Sad news...
I loved his Ninja Gaiden games, one of my favorite hack and slash games ever. May he rest in peace now and thank you for the amazing legacy you left for us
Not what I expected when I woke up this morning. awful news. RIP
Rest in peace legend
Gone at the age of 58, too soon...
I'm grateful to Itagaki for his push for the Ninja Gaiden 3D reboot, that action brought forth some of my favorite hack-and-slash games ever. May he rest in peace.
Sad to hear. Rest thy head on two comfy pillows in the afterlife good sir
Huh.
Can't say I saw that coming.
Anyway, back to business as usual.
Sad to see. Far too young. RIP Tomonobu-san.
The gaming world has lost a legend. Such sad news.
What a shame, he was such a personality in the industry, i remember how in an interview he made a top 5 of his most disliked games and the 5 games were Tekken from 1 to 5. the man was so funny. RIP.
Wow RIP sir
DoA 2 on PS2 was awesome I hope they do remasters of them
Sad news, guy was a legend of the industry for sure, made some of my favorite games of all-time. He was a huge part of the reason the original Xbox was on my radar at all, even more than Halo, it was Dead or Alive 3 that had me interested in that console as I loved DoA 2 on Dreamcast.
Damn, that hits hard. RIP Itagaki.
Sober reminder that we will all probably pass with regrets too.
Pressing F to pay respects.
Damn it's things like this that make me sad in these modern times 58 is to early to go may he rest in peace
This is sad. He wasn't even 60 yet.
Well a very sad news...
As an artist he will be remembered in the future for his work.
This guy was nuts but it’s sad to see him go so young. The industry needs big personalities.
I don't know about his other battles, but Ninja Gaiden kept beating me, so I'd say he won that one as well. RIP.
May this man rest in peace. Dead or Alive is one of my favorite series.
Thanks for the gaming memories, Tomonobu.
Rest in peace legend.
RIP...58 isn't very old.
Rest in Peace
RIP! DOA 2 and 3 are the most fun I ever had with 3D fighting games, so sad to see he apart the world so fast.
I will set my age to 99, just for him.
I'll "BEE" mourning him! (B for one of the BEST video game creators!)
Gone too soon. Always a shame to see creators die before 60.
Very unfortunate, from DOA to Ninja Gaiden to Devils Third (I liked that game), not sure if he worked on Wanted Dead at all.
He made some great stuff with interesting direction for sure.
@SuntannedDuck2
He didn't work on Wanted: Dead but many of his former teammates did. A guy who worked with that group on Wanted made a post about it on Linkedin. He said eventhough Itagaki wasn't involved his influence was still very much part of its design.
I was shocked when I heard he had passed away.
Rest in Peace
@Gamer83 gotcha thanks for clarifying that. I assume some Valhalla devil's Third staff and some not.
I don't know what his last or current projects were.
@SuntannedDuck2
Yeah, I think it was a mix of former DoA, Ninja Gaiden and Devil's Third devs. Also not sure what Itagaki's last project was, but I think DT was his last higher profile one.
RIP Itagaki! I’m a huge fan of his Ninja Gaiden entries and Devil’s Third was actually a really fun time for me, especially that insane online mode.
Damn, really wish he got to release one more game. He blazed his own path and didn’t care what people thought of his opinions. A truly unique game maker.
